Subject description: a complete architecture emulator

HI I need some testers to tell me if this package works.

http://www.2shared.com/file/5996448/1b1a990f/bochs-240-i486.html

It is Bochs compiled on Puppy4.1.2
./configure and make was used with no extra config options..

If it installs properly ?
how to use : open terminal type bochs.
[i]PLEASE LEAVE ALL FEEDBACK ON THIS TOPIC PAGE[/i]

(there was a menu entry put in however i havent set that up correctly as you need to open a terminal window to launch bochs)

Bochs is a terminal based application with a terminal based wizard.
qemu users should be able to use this more easily than most.

Why bochs? Bochs doesnt just give you a pc with in a pc... it can give you completely different architecture on your pc I.E. run 64 bit os on 32 bits systems (although not recommended for the faint of heart or those that cant afford to replace their system).

Excert from bochs:
Bochs is a program that simulates a complete Intel x86 computer. It can be configured to act like a 386, 486, Pentium, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4 or even like x86-64 CPU, including optional MMX, SSEx and 3DNow! instructions.

This will be part of a new release of Vuppy when all the applications are proven to work Smile ...

Limitations of working on your computer should only be the limitations of your computer. ie whether ethernet and wifi cards are detected, video cards and such like..

Thank You for your time

Cretsiah

Well I popped it manually into puppy 2.12 and it seemed to run just fine though I'm not used to setting up bochs so I would say that you have a good compilation there. I will have a further play with it soon...just been setting up nfs and playstation emulation and stuff Very Happy

regards

I had boch set up on a pc ON TOP of Windows 98SE.
I used it to run an early Apple OS on the PC.
Boch had quirks in locking up and I discontinued using it.
That was about a year ago.

I f your trying to virtualise any system you will want more than 127megs of ram..

what you need is to be able to give at least the same amount of ram to your host as to your guest..

example:

host OS: 256mg ram + enough hd space
guest OS: 256meg ram + enough hd space

also consider the size of your OS's you are tring to use.

example: host :winxp 512meg ram (if you have kept it small and tidy).
guest:puppy4.0 256meg ram
total required 768megs of ram..

hope this helps Smile

Sorry,

This didn't run under puppy 4.30. Only the desktop icon and the menu entry were installed. The package manager uninstall function got rid of the icon, but left the bogus menu entry. Restarting jwm removed the offending menu entry, so no harm in trying.

I think I will wait for the final release of 4.31 and try to recompile from source.

@ Drblock2,

The MENU Entry was a known issue so not imortant.

when you say it didnt work DID you try opening a Terminal window and typing "bochs" ??

As i would have expected some form of error such as "missing sdl libs" or "missing QT libs" maybe??

Subject description: bochs does not install

Sorry not to get back to this sooner. I also should have given more detail in my first post to avoid confusion.

The problem was that the bochs pet simply did not install. After going through the usual procedure, I did in fact open a terminal and type "bochs" (also "Bochs" and "BOCHS") and received the message "command not found."

I then ran pfind and discovered that only two files from the package had actually been installed - which I then, as described, removed.

I couple of days ago, I installed puppy 4.3.1 final and today tried again. I downloaded the latest source code bochs 2.4.1 and compiled according to the directions in the puppy documentation.

Once again, the pet package did not install. During the process, I did get some make errors:

Code:
proc_ctrl.cc:654: error: 'CheckPDPTR' was not declared in this scope
proc_ctrl.cc:668: error: 'CheckPDPTR' was not declared in this scope
make[1]: *** [proc_ctrl.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/mnt/sda5/puppy/bochs-2.4.1/cpu'
make: *** [cpu/libcpu.a] Error 2

Interpreting this is beyond my modest abilities and any help in installing bochs would be most welcome.

I should add that I sorely need an emulator to run WordPerfect without resorting to "the other operating system."
