Anyone???
I'm a new forum poster that loves Puppy, but I've posted several questions in different sections and seem to have trouble getting responses in general. I'm not put off too much. After all this is volunteer work and I'm asking for help.
Perhaps help in posting questions in the right place/form to get answers would be in order.
Thanks for any help from anyone.

Well pdvdsub seems to do similar and thats already in puppy.
Otherwise I use Handbrake which converts dvd to avi and other formats but I'm not sure if you just want to squeeze a dvd onto dvdr or more

mikeb,
Will handbrake rip and convert to xvid/divx? I want to get movies down to cd size. K9 copy is supposed to handle this, but Puppy version seems to be missing some menus.

Yes it can...you can specify quality, size or bitrate.
It comes as a single binary that runs from the command line that works as is in puppy. There is a gui but it needs large libs that are not normally on puppy but I use a simple script/gtk gui as I usually use xvid/mp3 and make cd sized. It was originally designed to make mp4 for apple/ipod use.

mikeb,
I have tried handbrake in the past, but maybe I just didn't know how to get what I wanted done. I'm not great at command line, and didn't quite get how to handle this task with the gui. Is there a place that I can find a simple tutorial. I tried google but no luck.
Also, how does it do with encryption?
I noticed you were posting in a section about k3b which k9copy uses on the back end. Any experience with k9copy?
Thanks for your replies. Its nice to get some help and is really appreciated.

Ok for testing purposes only here is my handbrake setup you can try out..
http://indogo.org/data/handbrake.tar.gz
Just pop the files in /usr/bin and run handbrakegui....see if it makes sense to you

ps if some of it looks crap(or won't work) its because gxmessage has been removed from puppy...I recommend the real thing...same goes for the real gtklogfileviewer (includer but renamed)...indeed I've added it below...replace the link to xmessage with it.

mikeb,
I'm getting closer. GUI opens. Scan DVD works great. Encode opens new GUI window that is reasonably understandable even for me. Set everything like I want and hit proceed. Message pops up "Missing input device. Run HandBrakeCLI --help for syntax." Any Thoughts?

Hmm odd...scan and encode both have input device set to
/dev/dvd....this if not set then set through the cd/dvd wizard in the menu to point to the dvd drive.
Were you using subtitles?...I changed the script quite a bit recently.
Would you mind posting the settings you are using?
Another thought...try ejecting and reloading the dvd just before encoding.....I've had to do this with some recent dvd's.

Tried using defaults. Tried using other settings. Tried different DVD's. Tried mounting first. Messed around with cd/dvd wizard. Still no go. I love how simple it seems this should be. It would be great to get it to work.

hmmm...tested on puppy4.12....tried to reproduce error but no joy.
The error suggests the command line is not right so I modified the script slightly just in case.
If /dev/dvd is missing a title not found error results instead.
A simple example below...One thing worth noting is the filename must include the extension eg .avi...something I should include.
I assume you are using the version of HandBrakeCLI I included as I havn't tested with the latest version.
Also which version of puppy are you using?

Victory!
Thanks mikeb. Your time is truly appreciated. Working great in 4.2.1 on a frugal install. Adding file extension was a good hint, but the problem was that an entry had to be made for "width." There was no default, as I'm sure you're aware. If I can be of any help to you any time please ask. Perhaps I am a good tester when trying to idiot proof.

Phew...was running out of hair to tear out.
Well the feedback is good as I will incorporate values when compulsory and will also have it retain settings in case user wants to tweak setup and restart
Originally there were just 4 boxes so more obvious they all needed filling...and the .avi part I could make automatic..ie add if missing.
Well happy converting.
By the way were you still using the original or the second version I posted?

mikeb,
I believe I am still using the first version you gave me. Any help when entering values is always good for the new user. Usually help buttons, question marks etc. instead of or in addition to default values. Just my 2 cents. What you have done already is terrific. If you update things please keep me informed!
I'm working on a personal remaster that suits my family's needs. Will probably end up on a pen drive with a couple of partitions that carries our music, a few movies for the kids (and maybe me), and the apps and such that I need for work. Also want to show it off to my friends, so i want it to have the stuff that will appeal to them I'm trying to keep it simple and small so this is perfect.
Thanks again.

Will do. I posted an earlier version a while ago but there was no interest. I recently made it more comprehensive and will include your suggestions to make it more complete/user friendly.
