impossible to write "@" in Seamonkey

#61 Post by lefty »

I recently downloaded Puppy 4.2.1. and made a CD
Then i booted with pfix=ram.
I choose swedish keyboard
( += I think Puppy 4.2 looks nice (just like 4.1) )

For me one of the best things with puppy is that i can use the same CD on many different computers. for example my laptop is more silent with Puppy (the CPU-fan runs for shorter periods than with windows).
in seaMonkey in puppy 4.1 i could not write e-mails in hotmail without using a pup-save.2fs-file , so I really wanted to try Puppy 4.2.1
BUT now i wasn't able to write @. i dont know how you write @ with English keyboard, With a swedish keyboard we push "Alt Gr" together with the key labeled @ (which also is the key for "2"). When i did this, Seamonkey was minimized and when i Maximized it again no @ had been written. i also tryed to write @ in Geany but it no "@" show up.
this "happend" on a desktop with a 2GHz pentium4 and i think the motherboard is from COMPAQ. I had no problems writing @ in Puppy 4.1 so i was surprised i cant do this in 4.2.1
does this only happend to me?, or Is there a solution?

(I'm sorry for my poor english),
/kind regards from a swedish puppy-user since puppy 2.14

12 April I reported the problem with Alt Gr and @, and to fix the problem, you can read on page 13 of the thread Puppy 4.2 "Deep Thougth" Bugs & Fixes. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=180

Jag hoppas att du kan läsa min dåliga engelska, jag tror din engelska är bättre.

Yes, The "Xorg-settings" made the @-key work on my computer

#63 Post by lefty »

Thanks janee!
This settings in "Advanced Xorg keyboard configuration" worked for me too, (it made it possible to type @). :-)
I havent spent much time with Puppy for the last days, but i would probably have needed a couple of days to figure this out by myself.
I think its a little strange to place pure keyboard-settings under the group/headline including Xorg, ( does this mean you will not be able to reach @ if you use the Xvesa driver instead ? ).
I am now able to see, Just like Puppy 4.1 the same problem still remains in 4.2 when you like to create a mail in hotmail, so i think I hold on to Pup 4.1 for a while, it is a little easier to start 4.1 if you want to start from CD only and with swedish keyboard (when you want to use a computer for internet).

Re @ with AltGr

I have only used the Xorg and FRUGAL installation on USB memory so I need only change one time for it to work well for me.

I find it strange they have added the word (latin1) in Puppy 4.2.1 in the choice of Swedish keyboard when running Live CD, maybe someone has confused Sweden with Switzerland ?.

Where did y'all hide the devx.sfs for 4.2.1, please?

I need to compile a module to run xmblackberry

Also, I guess that I need the "kernel source sfs files" as well.

hide?

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... modules-4/

kernel-src is also there (sfs has to be renamed).

OK, located the 4.x devx.sfs files here:
ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distrib ... modules-4/

Do I correctly presume that I need the 2.6.25.16 patched kernel source for 4.2.1?

I am not certain what you are saying here.

I downloaded the devx.sfs and the kernel-src-2.6.25.16-patched-puppy4.1.sfs

I am to just rename them something or ??, please?

Weak attempt at humor - I tried a couple of Puppy-based search tools and could not find it based on "4.2.1 devx.sfs" and similar search parametere.

I used http://ixquick.com and found it that way.

I found this elsewhere, are these steps correct?
Download devx_xxx.sfs from:-
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... _modules-4
(or the FTP equivalent)

Place it in /
#mount -o loop devx_xxx.sfs /data

Then type
#cp -a -v --remove-destination /data/* / >devcopy.txt

Then type
#umount /data
#sync
#ldconfig

Test
#gcc
If you get gcc: no input files
Then it is ok to compile.

Those are directions for people with Full installs. They'll technically work on all types of install, but you miss out on the benefits of using a .sfs file that way.

If you have a Frugal install, you just need to put the devx_421.sfs file in the root of the partition that your pup_save.2fs file is on (generally found at /mnt/home/). This way the stuff in the .sfs file stays compressed so that it takes around a third as much space IIRC. Your system also stays modular - you can remove it by simply deleting or moving the file so that Puppy doesn't load it next boot.

So if pup_save.2fs is at /mnt/home/puppy421/, you place the devx_421.sfs file at /mnt/home/.

If pup_save.2fs is at /mnt/home/, you still place the devx_421.sfs file at /mnt/home/.

As for the kernel source, place it in the same location as the devx_421.sfs file. You only need to rename it if you want Puppy to load it automatically - otherwise you can tell it to with the boot manager (Menu->System->BootManager). If you choose to rename it, all you have to do is make sure it ends with '_421.sfs' (example: kernel_src_421.sfs) and Puppy will load it the next time you boot.

You generally only need the kernel source if you intend to compile kernel drivers or the kernel itself.

Oh, and yes, for Puppy 4.2.1 you use the 2.6.25.16 patched kernel source.

Any reason what the checksum doesn't match the sfs?

What are these errors trying to tell me, please?

Quote:
# make
make V=0 -C /lib/modules/2.6.25.16/build M=/mnt/sda2/savestuff1/bb/kernel modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.25.16/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [modules] Error 2

NOTES:

The location of the modules is /mnt/sda2/savestuff/bb
The location of the devx and kernel is /mnt/home/

Just in case that difference is important.

It's telling you that one of the following is true:
  • You either didn't tell Puppy to load the kernel source .sfs or you did not rename it properly (you only need to do one or the other).
You have not rebooted since downloading the kernel source.
There is something wrong with your kernel source .sfs file.
There is something wrong with your /lib directory
The first one is probably the problem.

As for the md5sum, I remember that I had a problem checking the sum on a file last month, but I don't remember which file. I think the problem was that the md5sum file was saved using Windows line endings so the md5sum program was having trouble reading it. Try opening the checksum file in geany, and go to Document->Line Endings->Convert and set to LF (Unix). Then save it and try again.

Final? But devx_421.sfs won't run.

#75 Post by Kenny-M »

I have installed Puppy 4.2.1-k2.6.25.16 (from ibiblio) on a USB hard drive and it appears to work fine.

I set Puppy to save directly to sdb1 which is the USB hard drive. So I have no pup_save.2fs file.

In an effort to get the developement pack running I downloaded Puppy devx_421.sfs from ibiblio.

Following directions I put the devx file into /mnt/home (?) and used Puppy's bootloader to add the devx sfs.

After reboot Puppy had an accident on my floor which I had to wipe up. Instead of the normal boot sequence I received Red error messages like "/pup_ro4" wrapped or similar, "/pup_new failed", output in "/tmp/bootinit.log", Kernal panic then the P.C. locked up.

I tried booting twice with the save result. Puppy having a accident.

Finally I booted off the Puppy 421 CD and removed devx_421.sfs from the hard drive. After that the system booted OK but without devx. Puppy is paper trained again, at least for now.

Any ideas why devx_421 crashed?

Thanks.

You don't specify if you have a full install or a frugal install.
The story about the save is a bit unclear.

The frugal install saving directly to a partition method hasn't been tested very much for the last several releases. Sorry. :|

A workaround would be to follow the directions for installing the devx_xxx.sfs file on a full install. That method results in using more space and being less modular than the normal method, but it has the benefit that it will work in any type of install, as long as there is enough disk space for it.

"Beem, You don't specify if you have a full install or a frugal install. "

How do I know? I downloaded Puppy from ibiblio, burned to a CD then did a Puppy Universal Installer to an external USB hard drive.

When I shutdown down puppy the first line at the top of the screen says something to the effect it is at the highest level and a save is not necessary.

"Pizzasgood, A workaround would be to follow the directions for installing the devx_xxx.sfs file on a full install."

Where would I find these directions for a full install?

Thanks.

How do I know?
Look at the file /etc/rc.d/PUPSTATE. There will be a line like this:
PUPMODE=2
If the number is 2, then you have a full-hd install. If it is 12 or 13, then you have a frugal install.

There are more obvious ways to figure it out, such as by going to / and looking around to see if you're in the root of the partition you installed to or not, but checking the PUPMODE is the most foolproof way.

I've mentioned here and there that I thought it would be nice if Puppy showed both the Puppy version and kernel version on the desktop automatically (with an option to disable that of course). I think it should also go ahead and show the type of install too. It could just check the PUPMODE and use that to decide whether to display "Frugal", "Frugal (on Flash)", "Full", "Live", or "Multisession".
