Just out of curiosity, are you running a SAMBA server under Puppy? If so, which package?

Subject description: wrong place for dot and comma

Hello,
I used standard keyboard setup tool to add layout. Currently I have 2 layouts: GB and RU(winkeys).
The later is incorrect. "."(dot) and "," (comma) symbols are located in Shift+7 and Shift+6 keys, while in winkeys they should be on the right-most key next to right shift (dot - just this key, comma - shift+key). There are also some other discrepancies in symbols location.
As far as I remember, Shift+6 and Shift+7 were used in old models running under DOS, but that was changed in Windows, and all modern keyboards show this layout.
Will it be possible to set correct winkeys in this and/or future releases?

PS. Sorry if I am not the first who posted this.

Puppy need the help of a noob like me? cool! glad to give some feedback.

I am on the irc channel almost always when i use the computer. When you are on the irc channel for that long, you realize that the conversations that take place at always about the same thing(eg. linuxVSwindows).
You will also notice that everytime someone who is new to puppylinux or linux comes in, the questions they ask are always the same. These questions are mainly asking how to get a certain browser with flash installed.

From the way they ask these questions, you can tell that they expect it to:
1.Work out of the box
2.Simple to install
3.latest version
4.Be windows(lol)

There are already the .pet of the latest version of flash and firefox, etc... which works on the wikka or somewhere,
But do you think they will be able do find them?
The answer, sadly, is no. Yes... some will be able to. but with 2/3 asking how to compile or install a .deb(in other words they dont know what a .pet is), Linux will be a strange(maybe even scary) environment.

It is sad to think of the many new-to-linux people have asked simple questions(like "how do i get youtube working? they say my flash needs an update") but didnt get a reply.

A easy way to solve this is to update PPM or quickpet.
No need to update everything, just the popular stuff. Pidgin, Firefox, Flash, Java, and maybe more.

Also attym crashes is giving Puppy a bad impression. Im sure theres a reason for the saying "first impression counts". People judge stuff by the cover weather you like it or not.
------------------------
Talking about covers reminds me of one of the first thing anyone would click, the menu. If i had only a word to describe the menu, its "messy".

For example, does it make sense to have the mouse speed in "set properties of X". Sure it make sense to you guys, puppy is running on X. But will a newbie know? doubt so.

A faq on irc is how to use SFS. i think they wouldnt know where to choose the SFS files to load at bootup, because its called "bootmanager" in the menu. They wouldnt associate SFS with bootmanger, would they?

Also, no one uses three or four cd-rippers/calculators(tell me if you do)

Some simple GUI can be made to make the menu alot simpler.
-----------------------------------

There is alot of confusion because of the many puplets.
what is quirky? what is pupeee? what is lupu? which is for me?

A topic on the forum which tells people...

Could someone with some knowledge please put a "sticky" at the top of the first page listing all the derivatives and what's so special (or why they were created)?

and follow a simple format like:
Pupplet/Puppy name: Turbopup Xtreme
Latest version: Turbopup Xtreme v1.0
Status: Developing v1.1
Based on: Puppy 4.2
Purpose/description: Puppy Linux derivative optimized for speed and efficiency.

By the way, im using turbopup as an example because im using it now. XD.

OK, that one is solved. I fixed it by editing xorg.conf. But this is still a point of answer, because customizing multiple layouts in Puppy, especially if non-original (winkeys) layout is required, is not as obvious as would like to be.

i think puppy needs to add bluetooth support with a easy to use gui and add 3g modems full support and a easyer to use gui it is possible to make a 3g scanner that can look like pwireless

i think all this won`t take more then 10mb and will be a great step Forward for a great os like puppy

so far puppy dosnt support bt and 3g modems are realy hard to use in puppy

i`d like to use puppy as my only os even though my pc can easily run any other os i wont to yet i find that any os that needs over 125mb ram after full install is pure abuse even tho i have 2gb yet no need to use it if i have a none abusev os like puppy and although i can puppy works much beter and all apps i need too flash player is amazing in puppy better then windows and linux i think that most software today is fast and dirty but puppy is not

there for if only puppy will be able to fully support all the new tech right out of the box it will be great

or maybe not out of the box yet easy adding like using quickpet or puppy packages instllation from desktop

i hope it comes in to consideration

thank you

I first want to say that I am not a programmer but greatly admire those who are.

I have used Windows for 22 years and have wanted to try Linux for the last several, but was waiting for it to become more automated. Every couple of years I would read up on Linux, and this time came across info on Lucid Puppy, and gave 5.1.1. a go, installed to a 4GB USB stick.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Easy setup and connected to Internet right away (after I squared away my own ineptness ticking WEP vs WPA).

VERY COOL TO HAVE AN ENTIRE OS ON A STICK

NICE FEATURE TO SAVE ALL CHANGES TO SAVE FILE

APPRECIATED BEING ABLE TO INSTALL FF WITH A FEW CLICKS

NICE SET OF PROGRAMS PRE-INSTALLED (Open Office, etc)

NICE THEMES PRE-INSTALLED

GREAT PEOPLE ON THIS FORUM READY TO HELP NEWBIES

Now alongside the honeymoon, other things surprised and irritated me. These things are all due to my own expectations, not to any fault of Puppy.

So first thing was that (like so many other Windows users) I expected to be able to update and install programs by surfing to the Linux flavor, downloading and clicking on it inside Puppy. I had no idea .tar.bz2 files had to be "compiled" and don't even know what that means, except in the general sense that it's a process that has to do with reassembling the code or program modules or whatever. To me, this seems like a basic feature any OS requires... the ability to point-and-click to update/install. Yes, .pet files do this, but my suggestion is a pop-up on the desktop the first time Puppy launches (a simple text file would do), with a clear message that reads something like:

ONLY PROGRAM FILES THAT END IN ".PET" [& .deb or whatever] CAN BE INSTALLED BY PUPPY IN A POINT-AND-CLICK, AUTOMATED WINDOWS-LIKE FASHION. DOWNLOADING PROGRAMS MADE FOR LINUX THAT END IN .tar.bzx WILL NOT INSTALL AND MUST BE COMPILED FIRST. TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH PUPPY, PLEASE STICK TO .PET INSTALLATIONS FOR NOW. To read more about how to compile tar files etc, "go here" [with a link].

People tend to like to learn by doing, on the go. That notice would go a long way towards making the very first thing people need to know about Puppy clear up front. It could also have a tick box saying "Don't show this message again."

Another thing on my wish list would be the ability to uninstall pre-installed programs I don't need. Maybe there is a way and I haven't found it.

I liked how the icewm option and themes were included, plus Nathan wallpapers... and of course Linux has that bohemian-geeky feel and is totally cool just because it is open-source and built by people who care and who are neat people. Smile To that end, the Puppy team has really gone all out to make puppy a full-featured, automated and versatile OS while keeping it small and fast.

GREAT JOB. I like it more than I thought I would, it is growing on me, and I might become a Linux junkie.

Thanks to Barry et al for your hard work and for making this software. And thanks too to the many wonderful and helpful people in this forum.

(PS The original post was edited by me to remove stuff I later worked out. I thought Puppy could not upgrade FF from the website but needed a .pet for every upgrade, but later tried to upgrade again and it went smoothly; so was user error.)

Hi I'm Larry. I've been using Lucid Puppy 5.1.1 for about 4 days. I upgraded from 4.0. All together, I have been using puppy for about almost 2 weeks. I've tried 3 other distros fedora, ubuntu, and pclinux. I jkust booted to the live cd I made of them. Love the gnome desktop like fedora and ubuntu have. However I do not care for either one of them over all. Puppy is far superior to any linux I have looked at. My hat is off to Barry, and all who have participated in puppy's upkeep. I might technically consider myself a newbie, but I learn really fast.

PostPosted: Fri 15 Oct 2010, 01:15    Post subject: Linux attempts
Subject description: success

I have been trying to get Linux since about 1995 and most of my attempts were not successful, mostly due to hardware detection problems. I tried in 1995, 2000, 2005 and finally had some success with Ubuntu in 2009. I tried Debian, Slackware, Fedora, Feather and Mandrake.
My goal was to have a configurable, safe, streamlined base for Internet searching, word processing [WordPerfect quality with outlines, tables and HTML], art, genealogy and Prolog.
Current (2008-2010) hardware: 1) Toshiba Satellite notebook 2.8 GHz 512 MB RAM, 2) HP Pavilion 522 desktop 1.8 GHz 512 MB RAM, ViewSonic P95f monitor, 3) Telus High-speed Internet with ethernet cables.
Spring 2010 tried Wolvix and Vector but had hardware problens.
Summer 2010 tried KNOPPIX 5.1.1 on the Toshiba and liked it a lot.
Next I went looking for other 'Live' distributions that might be configurable.
KNOPPIX 6.2 and 6.1 Adriane worked well on the HP, not on the Toshiba.
Puppy 'lubu-511' did not work on either the HP or the Toshiba.
Puppy 'lubu-500' works very well on the HP [downloaded the .iso and burned it with IMGBurn].

I have less than thirty hours experience with Linux but I've found Puppy to be very enjoyable and easy to use for FireFox searching. Your friendly and helpful forum was a big attraction. Thank you.

Next, I'm going to learn about Linux, xfe, ROX-Filer and Linux equivalents to the DOS and Windows applications for my very limited range of interests: dealing with information gathering, database organization and coding.
Cheers

Older Xfe:
[Needs Fox-library]
Works on every Puppy I've tried except Dpup-009.

Newer Xfe:
Works in Dpup.
Has all dependencies included.
Looks nice too. Very Happy

Did you try 4.3.1? Some systems work better with some of the older versions, than the very latest:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/

I run 4.3.1-Retro on an old 333MHz laptop. I run 4.3.1 (normal) on 3 different desktops (750 Duron, 900 Athlon, 2200 Athlon), a netbook and a 1.6GHz laptop. Along with all the copies I have put on friends machines...

RetroTechGuy,
Thanks for the suggestion to use 4.3.1 to work on the Toshiba. Posted: 15 Oct 2010, 10:59
I will try that after trying another suggestion here for "...Synaptic touchpad...Xorg Wizard...desktop settings>Flsynclient...". One or the other should work. The fault is likely mine. I added a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse through the USB port months ago, to solve another problem. Cheers

I run Puppy on my Dell Latitude, with a wireless optical mouse (USB dongle).

Subject description: not working yet

RetroTechGuy,
I tried your idea about using pup-431 first. It failed and the 'verbose' setup, F2> ******=7, hung up on the modem part. It seems that the combination of Puppy v431 or v500 combined with the Toshiba laptop and my particular modem has some difficulty. Since lupu-500 has no problem with the modem, the variable is either the combination or the laptop. I will try other versions of Puppy to see which one works best. I'll try lupu-500 in the laptop using the 'verbose' setup to see what is causing the difficulty. Thanks again for taking the time to help. Cheers
