Hi Playdayz

I am using a different PC recently as my main PC fried its mobo
I used to have a P3/667 with 4 SCSI drives, and had a v5 VMWare client installation with VMtools on a win2K setup

Now I have a dual P4 2.6gb rig running XP [groan, but it's better than that vista that was on it], I haven't recovered loads of stuff from that box & I still have VMTools on CD but it bitches and says it can only be installed in a virtual machine, so the question is:
Is there a way to use this - I can probably recover my v5 VMWare client setup, but it means adding an adaptec/scsi card to this box....
It's in the pipeline, as I intend testing big_bass's slaxer with SMP to see if it will scsi boot - a long standing Puppy problem
- [ttuuxxx, take note!! - scsi booting & SMP capability would be brilliant
- though the kernel may need to have it 'turned on' in a recompile]

Having the ability to transfer files between a virtual puppy and my main OS would be 'most excellent, dude'
I have a Lacie 300gb network drive, but despite my best efforts I couldn't get samba to see it - I normally have it shared between several PCs on my network - that could do the job, but I'd prefer not to use it in USB mode....all my usb drives are full up.....more kit needed
Any other suggestions re vmtools?

Perhaps you should have a separate thread for this - sorry ttuuxxx

Aitch :)

Cool, thanks ttuuxxx

Playdayz - don't worry about vmtools
I retrieved my copy of VMWare Workstation v5 and installed it, having un-installed the player, as it wouldn't let me unless I did....
However, it then reported that my VMWorkstation version was too old as the vmx was newer & I needed to update to a later version, so I'm back with the player - irony is, now my firewall won't let the virtual puppy on the net....

hey ho, something needs resetting, but I'll sort that

All that just to try to copy/move files one to the other....darn

PS Strange thing is, both dillo & firefox just gave a blank screen - no indication of any progress screen/waiting for, or anything
Oh, and when I did turn the [windoze] firewall off.....
.... Firefox auto-updated to 3.5.1 ...cool....& there's private browsing in the menu under tools...
Must go, got an ebay bid running

ttuuxxx

a quick 'loan' from Joe's slaxer thread
I wrote a "quick" info get script to help solve problems

Paul (pakt) added to it a another step he added more logs
and had it all placed in one folder

this script is now called info_get_v02.tar.gz
attached

1. download it

2. unzip it

3 click on this script----> info_get_v02

4 this compressed file gets auto built for you info_tarball.tar.gz

5 attach it to your forum post

more people can find what went wrong
fixing problems faster :D

*this will work for any version of puppy*

files that get saved are:

bootkernel.log
cpuinfo.txt
ddcprobe.txt
dmesg.txt
dmidecode.txt
elspci-l.txt
lsmod.txt
meminfo.txt
xerrs.log
Xorg.0.log
download here:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=20306

I recommended it's own thread in beginners, and sticky status

Hi Aitch I just tried it and got this error in 2.14X
line 29: dmidecode: command not found
sounds like I'm missing something for this to work

dmidecode doesn't seem to exist in pre - 4 pups. I downloaded the pet for it (from pet_packages_4), and it works ok on 3.01.
Script now works, although it complains about not finding Xorg.0.log

Well guys I managed to get the first coat of paint on the walls, lol I was painting up until 1hr before the guest for the wife's 40th birthday party, lol I'll finish it next week sometime, but until then back to 2.14X :) Oh ya, when it comes to wedding rings, I dislike tight rings on my fingers, I get kind of nervous when things are tight on my fingers, So I alway have rings about 1 size bigger than my finger.
I lost my first wedding ring I was swimming at bondi-beach a few years back and it slipped off and away it went into the Ocean, My 2nd wedding ring well I was scrubbing the paint off my hands yesterday in the shower and guess what, down the drain it went, I ripped apart the drain to find it and it was gone, lol Lets just say my wife wasn't happy again, lol
Oh well 3 times the charmer.

I was going to compile handbrake and it looks like it needs Jam, lol so this is what it said for the missing deps, LOL

You're supposed to be building with make, not jam.
If you were going to use jam--which you shouldn't--you'd run:
'./jam' on a Mac, or
'jam' on Linux or Windows

To make jam, boil fruit with sugar and an acid until pectins are released.

/bin/sh: jam: command not found

Thanks gposil that saved me some time, I was looking for a small dvd converter and well a 12MB pet just is too large, I was looking more for the area of 1MB or less for 2.14X.

no it doesn't have ffmpg, but not for long :)
i"m really undecided which media player to go with gxine needs updating in 2.14X so either gxine of mplayer, What I'm trying to do is figure out which would give the most for size.

Hope this one is better than V6 :) And if it isn't we'll have to work on it, lol I put way too much in this one to revert back to V4, This one is based on V5.

Ahh, first ever version of Puppy not to recognise my wireless card.

Its under Ralink as rt61 but no network is recognised or able to load a driver.

Pretty pointless an option to download other wireless drivers when I can't get online anyway :(

Only check so far, as I prefer to get a connection first on any Puppy.

OH no... this is not good.....
Very different print install... OK.. followed the instructions.. added my brother 1440 printer... did not show at all... so went up to the top printer... add printer from the printer control screen. ADDED again.. had to type in /dev/lp0 OK... PRINTER WORKED... printer does not show... but if set to default will work..... first TIME with Abiword... took a long time to get it to print. GOOD.... opened Gnumeric... again, bro not shown... tried to print.. NICE window on the new printer manager.. it shows FINISHED... well... NO OUTPUT... Hummmm try again... NO OUTPUT... try to print a second time from abiword... NO PRINT..... we have a problem.

OK.. let us test WIFI.... I have two dongles hooked up.. only one shows... no big deal... both use the same module..... HUMM.... do a scan... description hits 33%... think I said this earlier with x5.... HANGS the computer....
This testing is one of the reasons to have the version on the screen... I have labeled my disks.. but apparently not well enough... so having trouble telling which of the multiple versions I am attempting to boot from....

Well this took a while... I worked back all the way to 214x3... i...

OK... here is what I think is happening.. I can connect to my home network with the internet connection... if I go to WIFI...and it does not see a wireless node right away it hangs the entire computer.. .I confirmed this because I have two lan ports... one is connected to my current LAN.. faster.. if I attempt to connect to the other not connected card.. it HANGS the computer....also explains why I knew x3 worked the other day.. but hung today....

:(

Dinner time.. will retest printer tomorrow.

Hi Rob did any of the earlier version of 2.14X or 2.14R get you online? and if so which version? Regular wired adsl works for me. Also most people have both options wired/wireless like at my house I have a 4 port wireless/wired router, So the option for wireless drivers would be handy, I would first use the wired connection to download the wireless ones. I'm willing to work this out with you if you have the time.

Hi Minnesota as printing goes, There has been so many upgrades to 2.14X that somethings like printing might get broken, I did compile cups once a while back, but haven't include it yet, I did include the lib for a pdf viewer, gimp for compiling, that way extra drivers would be made for anticipation that a newer Cups will be installed in the future once the backend is finished updating. I'll focus on Printing for 1-2 releases later on, But for now if there are wireless issues, that needs to be fixed first.

Also I included a new program called VanRed under multimedia, its basically a dvdripper, you need to have the space to use it :) To use VanRed, just place a dvd in the drive and click the menu/multimedia/VanRed and it will find the dvd and ask a couple of simple questions and rip the dvd to a folder. I tried it yesterday and worked really well.

Also PMirrorget is a website downloader by gposil, if you want to download a whole website the use it :)

I also included the full version with all options filled for Asunder, so now you can convert music cd's to wavpack hybird,flac,ogg,mp3,wav

2.14x7 trial

#949 Post by sinc »

as an inexperienced puppy user I am a bit embarrassed to post these thoughts b/c they are probably something I am doing wrong but I figured I will add my thoughts just as what I see as really a "non-computer guy". Many of these things feel really small and insignificant but I just notice them and figured I would bring them up.
I am using an older laptop and did a frugal upgrade to 2.14x7 from x5 that I have been using for a few days.

1. this is probably the biggest issue - simple mail freezes my system. I usually use firefox in fullscreen and thought that may have been the issue but I tried "in fullscreen" and "not" and every time it freezes my system and I have to power off manually and reboot. Maybe it is incompatible with one of my other add-ons???
2. My mouse moves sooo fast. I would like to slow it down but cannot get it to change speeds. I tried to use gxset but didn't find that it did anything. How can I slow down my mouse pointer.
3. the lock icon right justifies on my screen no matter where I move it after I reboot
4. this is probably a jwm issue but I cannot minimize firefox in fullscreen mode. it will close and unmaximize but not minimize
5. Upup has an icon changer that I liked. I would like to be able to change the icons on the desktop (I really like the smooth color icons) but am not sure how to do it without the icon changer. I think I could even use puppy-look and download the new icons I just wouldn't know how to set them.
6. I really would like to change the order that my partitions show up on my screen. Right now they show up (hda3 : home : hda4). Is there anyway to get them to show up in order- (home : hda3 : hda4)?
7. B/c I like fullscreen firefox I set my taskbar to autohide. On the desktop on the right side, there is a small dot left after the autohide. REALLY not a big deal but I just always see it and so I thought I would bring it up.
8. Why are there so many CD/DVD ripper/writers? Is there not a single program that can do all those things, make the menu a lot cleaner and still not add much size to the .iso?
9. I am not sure what gpccard is supposed to do but when I click on it I don't see anything happen. I have a pcmcia wireless card slot.
10. I see a lot of forums online talking about how to optimize firefox. Is firefox already optimized or are there really settings that can be changed to make it faster? If so, why not do it in the 2.14x release and already have it done for us inexperienced users.

Thanks again, this already is the best working and fastest OS I have used on my computer. If nothing above is changed I am still going to use this version of puppy as my main OS and I am VERY happy with it. Thank you again so much.

Downloaded and installed (full) on my P3 733/256 test computer.

Installer works fine again.......haven't tested much but every app launches from the icon like it should and FF 3.5.1 still seems really stable.

Wired dsl is working...everything is fine so far.

Ttuuxxx, thanks for all your hard work.

By the way, 2.14x7 uses a lot less resources than 4.20 or 4.21.
