Classic Pup 2.14X -- Updated 2 series
How do I open up initrd.gz ???
More usually I cd to where initrd.gz is and create a directory beneath that, cd to that new directory and use the command
zcat ../initrd.gz | cpio -id
to extract the contents. But that isn't working for me.
I ask because I prefer to remaster rather than use a save file. Create a huge initrd with pup sfs (and zdrv) contents contained within, along with copies of initrd.gz and vmlinuz. That way I can remaster without needing a CD (all integral), and also means that initrd contents are open (sub directory under the remaster script) so I can edit init or any other files (DISTRO_SPECS etc). It also means it can be very quick to remaster, typically a few seconds if you use the mksquashfs -noappend -noX -noF -noD -noI (that's a capital i (eye) not a L) i.e. no compression. I then usually have that remaster script as a desktop icon so a click of that and a few seconds later I have a new initrd (huge) that can replace the previous one, where the new one has a snapshot of the puppy at the time the desktop icon was clicked ... i.e. a save.

edit initrd

Not sure this will help. I suspect it merely provides a GUI linking to the commands you were entering manually. But that's a guess -- I haven't decompressed it.

Yes, I also ran fix menus from the menu entry and in a console but nothing changed. Opera looks to be installed but won't start. there is no .desktop file. I also tried running it from /usr/bin but no luck. I ran 214x pfix=ram and made a new save file then reinstalled opera but it still won't run. I also found that changes were not being saved to the save file but have fixed this. Have installed pwidgets. Have still not solved the drag and drop issue in rox. Can copy and paste using thunar. Is this the way it's done?Did you reboot or restart the x server after you installed?

Ken.

Its the second one on the list of 2.
gunzip initrd.gz
mount initrd /mnt/data -o loop
### Now go into /mnt/data and make any edits you need to make ###
umount /mnt/data
gzip initrd

Hi guys a few weeks back I posted a pic of a PC I purchased used for $60 including a mouse, keyboard and screen, well its fast enough for puppy and had lots of memory 2gigs worth, and a 3.2GHz CPU, but the browser wasn't stable and it was crashing, I had a feeling the default built in Video vga on the motherboard wasn't getting the right driver so I said screw it two days ago, I'll buy a new 2Gig pci-e video card on ebay, Cost $85 Canadian delivered. Ok it cost more than the PC, lol but I look at it like this, It will give me years of speed for compiling and it has a hdmi for movie viewing on the TV , So it came today and all I got to say now is wow. Facebook is fast, movies hardly take any cpu and the system is now stable, really for older pc's I would suggest a 128MB video card min, I used to use a Radeon Sapphire 256MB AGP video card with TV out and that worked well 10years ago on puppy linux, Then I made a newer PC and upgraded the motherboard and power supply, ram, cpu, hard drive and video card to a 1Gig in Australia, then moved back to Canada and started off with this PC.

did you run ghasher and check your md5sum on the iso image ??keniv wrote:Yes, I also ran fix menus from the menu entry and in a console but nothing changed. cool, its really fun when things start working out with puppy, Its like a exciting puzzle unraveling, that's probably why puppy is so addictive.rufwoof wrote:Thanks. Switched from XVesa to Xorg and drag/drop's in ROX work fine.
Managed to extract initrd.gz as well

I tried making a humongous intrd.gz, so that it might be PXE booted, but there was insufficient space.ttuuxxx wrote:cool, its really fun when things start working out with puppy, Its like a exciting puzzle unraveling, that's probably why puppy is so addictive.rufwoof wrote:Thanks. Whist Xorg works ok on the drag/drop front, at shutdown it leaves my screen dark (graphics mode I suspect) so I don't get to see the 'save' (textual) options.
Otherwise great. Using it to post this now (FireFox 42.0 courtesy of Shinobar's portable FireFox (on HDD). The right-click 'build' (re-download) doesn't work though, but a reboot to a later puppy and update as and when new releases occur is a simple option/task).
Thanks.
Hi All
Here are the answers to your Qs.
I've also have had a problem with the firewall complaining about missing tables, this after it had been used without a problem and loosing the settings in firefox after shutting down which lead me to believe stuff was not being saved to the save file. A new save file fixed the firewall but not firefox. It seems to loose its settings after a couple of shutdowns. I might re-download the iso and start again.

Ken.

drag and drop issues with rox is due to the wrong Xorg driver being installed.
I used versa because I thought it would perhaps load the system less. I will try xorg. Do I also need to use the appropriate driver? On X, did you use Xorg or Vesa?
I used yours (ttuuxxx) version. Also which Opera did you try, my release or Eathray's??
No but I will do so. Just done this and md5sum is the same as that on first post.did you run ghasher and check your md5sum on the iso image ??

Thanks for the reply Earthray. I have decided I to start with everything afresh. There is one thing I wonder about with 214x. With all the other pups I've tried I have put initrd.gz, vmlinuz and the pup_xxx.sfs all in a named folder then wrote a suitable script to point grub4dos at that. When the save file was produce it has always been placed in that folded. In 214x the save file is put in /mnt/home. If iI move it to the 214x folder it seems to find two save files with the same name. One of these does not exist.. I thought this was why I had the problem with things not being save to the save file. I booted using pfix=ram and produced a new save file and left it in /mnt/home. I thought this one was working so I deleted the first one. However, the new on started to lose stuff. Can I ask if anybody else has done a manual frugall install this way to tell me where the 214x save file was put.

Ken.

Yeah, that's something I've had a little trouble with too. The right boot parameter to make it call the correct save file. It's supposed to be something like psave or pupsave = blah blah, but I haven't figured it out yet... we need ttuuxxx for that one
Edit:
It goes to mnt/home/ by default, but it would be cool to put it in the 214x folder and have it always call that save file automatically via grub, but I haven't been able to make it work.

I seem to recall somewhere reading that series 2 pups needed the "psavemark" parameter to define the savefile location. Vague memory though...Eathray wrote: The right boot parameter to make it call the correct save file. Thanks for that Earthray. I deleted my 214x directory and save file and started again. However ,I still have the problem of saving to the save file. I believe that only the stuff that was saved when I set it up ie wifi, xorg etc. After that nothing seems to be saved properly. There are odd things though. This time i went for xorg. This let me move icons about on the desktop. these changes are saved when I reboot. I can install pwidgets. This works fine to the next reboot. It does not appear on the screen. It cannot be opened but it can be uninstalled. Unless there is a grub command that I can use to tell 214x the save file to save too I seem to be stuck.

This is what I used to use:
Adjust to suit your setup.
I think you have to add the PUPSAVE parameter *after* you have made the savefile. Otherwise it complains a lot and won't boot.
Code: Select all
title 214X (hda2/214X)
find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /214X/initrd.gz
kernel /214X/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PDEV1=hda1 psubdir=214X pmedia=atahd PUPSAVE=ext3,hda2,/214X/pup_save-214X.3fs
initrd /214X/initrd.gz
