gone got opra pet .it's on the firefox icon
You can always rename the icon (Opera, or whatever) by right-clicking on it, then left-clicking on Edit Item.

Edit: ttuuxxx posted new Opera .pet on 9-15-11, here:
http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/2.14X/Software/
Unlike previous Opera .pet, it does not hijack the browse icon.
To create Opera icon, go to file manager:
usr/share/applications
...and drag Opera icon to desktop.
Use above instructions to rename it.

any use for gflashplayer (the standalone gtk1 version that is only 1277k and uses <8m RAM)

there are no pages that link to it anymore, so I can't find out if it is redistributable, so you will need an internet connection (the pinstall.sh script downloads it and puts the necessary bits in place) to get it, but after that you can play your flash games browserless on your old 486

I made a symlink for the libstdc++ that it asks for based on the wary libs(but it should be portable)

usage:
gflashplayer /usr/share/examples/vector-images/omelette.swf

or use the menu entry - it can select files

I can play most of the games on pupweb.org with sound & either online or offline

edit: dug through the wayback machine to find this mozplugger entry to use it in a browser (if you use flash7 as just a plugin, it can kill the browser, this may provide a sort-of sandbox)

application/x-shockwave-flash:swf:Flash animation
swallow(Macromedia Flash Player 6): /usr/bin/gflashplayer "$file"

syntax may likely have changed since 2003 though

MHHP, it's a mystery why 214x-Top8.0 won't boot on that old laptop. With same CD, I've booted into my desktop machine to type this update, IOW, I'm using 214x-Top8 right now.

So odd that it would fail on the laptop with such a specific complaint. Oh well, thanks again for your help and thanks to ttuuxxx et al for Classic Pup.

FWIW, Samba-TNG works fine in 214X.

Top8 perfect execept fpr router lockout

#4525 Post by greengeek »

.
I really love Top8 and want to use it on a few of my boxes, but in testing it I have come up against a bug that might be a showstopper for me.

I think it may be the same bug that has prevented me from being able to use any installed 214x in the past, on computers of all sorts.

In the past I have had all sorts of problems connecting to the internet with 214x.

Today I have been able to pin it down a little more:

Sometime during the bootup phase (before we get to the woof woof greeting sound), Top8 puts my router into a state where it will block any new attempt to issue a new IP address.

The effect is this: Top8 has received it's DHCP IP, and continues to access the internet ok, but only until the next boot, and at that point the router will lock it out. and not issue an IP.

Also, the router locks out ANY OTHER MACHINE that tries to request an IP through any of the wired ports. (further testing to come via the wireless side of the router - but I think that might be ok).

This behaviour persists until the router is turned off/on.

I do not have this behaviour with other versions of puppy and would love to know how Top8 is putting the router into that particular state.

This problem is totally reproducible and if anyone can suggest how to get around it I am keen to have a go.

(I'm pretty much a noob - I rely almost totally on the GUI and only approach the commandline when desperate; but I'm keen to try whatever anyone might suggest)

FURTHER TESTING - I read some posts that suggested that 214RC5 was better at networking than later 214's, but RC5 gives me the same symptom. I have now temporarily overcome this by configuring static IP. However I would still like to make DHCP reliable if anyone has any tips what I can look at or try in order to establish why Top8 puts the router in this strange state. cheers!

pup 2.14X top 8.0 browser is aurora 6.2 beta????

#4526 Post by openwell2 »

Just did full install of top 8.0 and was surprised at the default browser???? (':o')
Aurora 6.2 on beta update channel?????
Seems to be a firefox clone.
Any idea of how to get back to firefox downloaded and set as default browser?
Pet package still has old firefox 1.5 or something?
I can grab firefox from the forum, but page 1 of this thread talks about having to hack plugins for firefox 6.0 or similar?
I have changed preferences so as "not to update".
Any suggestions?
Many thanks

Aurora is the codename for firefox beta future versions, Aurora is Firefox 6.2 :) so nothing really to change at all. you could always just go to the Mozilla Firefox site and download the latest linux version and go to /lib and delete the firefox directory and extract the latest to /lib and just make sure the folder is called firefox and it will run just fine.

I downloaded Barry's compiled bluegriffon pet package for Wary and added Fireftp and a few missing deps and packaged it up, bluegriffon is a fork of Kompozer wysiwyg editor. It looks nice
here's a link http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/2.14X/S ... 0-214x.pet

If you uninstall it you might need to add
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/pet_pa ... 7.5-w5.pet
because I added warys to the package and it might remove the default 2.14x sqlite.

Aurora 6.02a beta is Firefox

@Ttuuxx,

Many thanks,
I will stick with it then.
Good to know how to change it in the future since firefox "beta" stuff has been bad luck for me.
Don't know about anyone else.
Will cross my fingers since I must have firefox features and add-ons.

if you need any specific plugins to work on Aurora that haven't been updated to firefox 6, just send me a link to the package and I'll update the plugin to work on it. only about 30% are updated to firefox 6

pet packages for 2.14X Top 8.0

#4532 Post by openwell2 »

@Ttuuxxx,
I am having trouble finding compatible pets that have dependencies.
Can you suggest a good repository? that includes dependencies?
I tried to install seamonkey 1.1.18 with addons like the one Barry included in Wary 5.12 .
The list of missing dependencies totalled about 50 items?
Got similar missing list when I tried the Seamonkey in the package manger of Top 8.0?
I have been using puppy for about 6 months and have tried several other puppies.
Usually, I am only missing a few libs as dependencies.
And I can search in the forum and add them without much trouble.
Just not sure which packages are compatible with Top 8.0
Many thanks for any help or suggestions.
