I've posted a modified AUTOEXEC.BAT file here for WakePup2, v.0.2, which is included in Classic Pup. The boot menu now has pfix options, including filesystem check.

A week has passed, and dealora is clearly not serious.
For anyone confused by dealora's question:
Realtek RTL8187-based USB wifi devices are supported out of the box in Puppy 2.14.
If anyone experiences problems with these devices, you should post your USB device ID, as explained earlier.

any idea what I'm doing wrong? does it need ext2 or 3 only?

hi jim

Puppy 2,3 and most of 4 series was ext2,3 the ext 4 versions of 4 series were buggy, puppy 5 series had a stable ext4, 2.14X works on most pc's but it uses an older kernel that is much smaller than the latest puppy and runs with a lot less resources, I use ext3 only so I can be 100% guaranteed that it works with all puppy's plus its really stable. :)

Thanks, ttuuxxx!
Did a little testing; this Java version requires a minimum 512MB save file before installing; it can't be installed in pfix=ram mode like older versions.

It will install in 4.1.2 and 4.3.1, but with no menu entry.
Same applies to Classic Pup 2.14xRC5...it says there's a menu entry when installing (usually under Menu/System), but none appears.
As long as it's installed and functional, that's all that matters. :)
Running Top 8.

I was checking out the Java (jre) pet and confirmed there was no menu entry for the Java Control Center. Just rename and remove the "zip" part from the desktop file attached, move it to /usr/share/applications/ and refresh menus.......new menu entry.

clarf wrote:hi Hugh,

If you can not mount and write the NTFS using Pmount, it could indicate a problem with that FS.

Running dmesg could show the problem mounting that NFS, surely you´ll find a meesage about NTFS is inconsistent and asking you to run a run chkdsk /f on Windows.

Also try to mount the NFTS manually to check for any error return using:

Code: Select all

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows -t ntfs -o rw

Have you seen any error with dmesg?, mounting from command lines shows something unusual?

Could you try with a older 214X version, maybe something earlier than top series.?

Greetings,
clarf
Thanks for the assistance Clarf.

There were no problems with the NTFS drives/partitions.

I've physically relocated that drive to my second
machine for further evaluation and experienced no
problems at all with XP checking the drive and read/write
operations.

I've added another drive to my present machine and
have formatted and partitioned it as ext3 so as to be
able to create large files and have full access from
all of my Puppies.

The Windows programs I most use for convenience
in processing video files run well with Wine so I'm
able to gain access to those on the ext3 drive without
any problems.

As I continue to use TOP8 I've noticed a couple of strange
quirks and I'm wondering whether it's my machine or
something else?

YouTube videos play painfully slow from Firefox in
TOP8 - only Puppy 3.01 has so far been able to play
YouTube at a near normal speed on my rig.

Certain web page graphics come up in Firefox as
a randomized square/rectangle of multi-colored pixels
- this is a first as I've not encountered that with any of
the other Pups.

Would it be possible to replace Pwget in TOP with
Pwsget? It's very nice to be able to include user
and password for those downloads that require them.

@Hugh:

I'm running 2.14xRC5, and had the same problem with NTFS.

I could download to and install .pet packages from an NTFS partition, no problem.
But moving files to or from an NTFS partition was another story.
It often resulted in this:
ERROR: Operation not permitted.

...which even occurred when I attempted to move files from one NTFS partition to another.

I reformatted both in GParted's NTFS-3G...same result.

So I finally took NTFS out of the mix, and currently have FAT32, ext2 and ext3...and no more problems.

I believe the culprit is that kernel, 2.6.18.1.
It doesn't handle NTFS as well as later ones.
Edit: Actually, I was wrong. See page 300.

Hiiii all nice people i'm new here
Good compiling to all !!!!

Hi Dewbie i got also that problem with NTFS, but using Mut i can write create folder create txt file (did not try pmount or ntfsmount)
but not save for exmple menu.lst exisisting, than i copied menu.lst and was ble to save, and eventually also rename and cacel the existing... strange..

I write here to ask Tuxxx why devx files are pets and not sfs. I converted Pet in sfs3 with createsfs to have gcc but seems the sfs filesystem is not loaded. (I'm using 214x-top8)

Firefox give illegal instruction and i read some that can be flash and there is a fix for lahf_lm instruction

Yes NTFS is a problem in this version.

Puppy had NTFS from Puppy 2.01???

About the first distro to >> copy, delete, move files on that system.

I began to stop using my Avast Bart boot cd to fix Windows.

me too,

I lost a couple of save files because chkdsk ran at bootup and screwed things up....and there's no undo for that particular process, so I NEVER let it run any more........pressing any key will interrupt it, then, run chkdsk from within running windoze, if necessary, preferably after copying savefiles to USB stick

Earlier puppies certainly seemed to cope with NTFS better....maybe ntfs-3g has been changed somehow, due to 64bit code allowance?

Hi Maguz,

Fisrt post of this thread has the 214x-top6_devx.SFS devx file. This will work with the latest top8, just put this file in the smae directory that your pupsave file and it will be loaded at next boot.

By "earlier," do you mean pre-2.14?

No, I was thinking pre 5 series, as although I have to admit most of my Puppy use to have been predominantly 214/214R/214X, 412/431, and TXZ_4.5, I'm going by the help posts I've responded to, and a personal recall and experience rather than an actual stats count

I've only had 2 NTFS crashes/CHKDSK runs which have cost me savefiles and both occurred with lucid variants, which have been otherwise quite pleasurable
It may merely be coincidence....?

Otherwise, I think I once had NTFS write error/inability, or something, but I can't remember which Puppy that was on....it was a while ago
