This includes an older version of the nVidia driver, but it should be fine for a GeForce2. |
I generally have been testing 214x on older equipment with CRT monitors with no problems but on my main Linux box with an old Nvidia card I could never get the desired screen resolution. Instead of 1440x900 on the LCD monitor I'd be stuck with 1024x768 .
Well, MU's package is working fine...... running at 1440x900 and nothing is distorted now. Thanks for posting the link.

hi James which file worked on that link there are 3 files under download and after that a link to another thread with a 13mb download. Mu also mentioned that a internet connection would be needed for additional drivers.
do you have the driver locally? that I could add to the iso, if its a reasonable size.

Those 3 links listed were dead but I used the actually 13 mb installer download
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/3D-Control-Center/InstallNvidia-Puppy-2.12-and-2.13.pup
Nvidia X server settings is in the menu, but doesn't work....but I'm using the "nv" driver and have the correct resolution (1440x900) so all is good. The driver was in the dotpet I downloaded, Just installed the dotpet, exited to a prompt, typed "installnvidia" did a couple of clicks in the installer and done.No additional downloading.
I did keep the dotpet this time though.....
GeForce 2 mx400 card here by the way.

I mistyped, it's an old style dotpup ........ not a pet and that link is it.It has the installer as well as some drivers.I'm using the 9629 with this card.
Actually, I've rebooted and reinstalled the dotpup again....just to verify there wasn't any problems.

must be an easier method, 13MB is too large for the main distro, I even spent some time on it and managed to get it around 6 MB, but it still uses 4Mb compressed opengl, where as the new puppies didn't have opengl, must be another way, probably if I compile a newer NV driver.

If you can't get anything small enough to add to the main distro, a pet should do perfectly well for those who need it.Personally, I have no problem installing a pet to get the correct driver.Just takes a minute.

Wired internet connected automagically here too on 214X-top6.1. Slick.
However, I normally use wireless and for me the wireless internet connection wizard got broken. (WPA on ath0) It works in 214X-top6. Clicking on the "Wireless" button on the second screen of the wizard merely closes that screen, no messages. Used pfix=ram, md5sum is OK, and the same wireless drivers are loaded as in 214X-top6. Manual WPA setup via tempestuous's instructions http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=22469&start=10 does work on top6.1. That's the limit on my knowledge on what to check.
Belated thanks to you, ttuuxxx, and tempestuous for your many hours of contributions.

Here's something I would like to share about Firefox
I'm working on the next release and have the latest Firefox 4.0 final installed
when I went to setup the layout, focusing on the Bookmarks toolbar, I had to remove the puppylinux.ca link since its dead anyways, and added Facebook since its so popular, why not there's still almost 50% of the area free.
Ok this is where it gets strange, usually I have to copy over the /lib/firefox/defaults/profile/places.sqlite file to the main /firefox directory, this time round it went from around 200kb to 10MB, OMG whats going here, I checked it a few times and yes it somehow displaces 10MB, even if I delete the root/.mozilla folder and make any changes it blows up in file size. how strange it must be a bug, then I had an idea to tar.gz the whole folder lib/firefox/defaults/profile and guess what?? the folder squashes down to 57kb and when I right click the folder its get the uncompressed size its 11MB, altering that sqlite file really doesn't add anything once its compressed but the whole Firefox folder grew 10MB and when its compressed its about the same size.
So Sqlite files must really compress by an astonishing amount. or that 10MB file is just wasted space.
I have another Idea I might try first

haaaaaaaa I did it, basically I loaded an older version of 2.14-top4, with an older version of firerox beta did the changes and saved the places.sqlite which was 188kb not 10MB.
It works fine and all is good once again
ttuuxxx
Oh ya I also reported the bug to mozilla
