Thanks for sharing your experience.

One question: Why didn´t you go right to 2.6.18.8 kernel?. BarryK already patched this kernel with squashfs-3.3. Although the unionfs version he used has some bugs and your squashfs patch is newer, that kernel version is very stable.

Long time ago I used Barry´s source and found some workaround for the unionfs problems. I posted my founds here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=58858. Maybe you could share your knowledge there and continue my experiments in 2.14X.

Greetings,
clarf
Hello, clarf :)!

To answer your question:
I've been thinking about how to upgrade the kernel to sfs ver. >=3.1 (proper, 214 has some 3.1rc[1|2]), and also whether it would be feasible to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.18.8. Kernel 2.6.18.1 that was used for 214[-|r|X], 216(1) and 217(1) were patched by BK and all the links to the original, complete, sources, patches and all, seemed dead (puptrix.org, e.g.); I had some patched sources of K2.6.18.1 stashed away, and ttuuxxx provided some more at his smokey01 repo.
Regardless, I wanted to (at least in the first go at it) keep all the original BK-patches to the kernel, so as not to risk loosing any support for older hardware that was working, thus I manually patched BK's K2.6.18.1 (already patched with sfs-3.1rc?) with sfs-3.4.

AFAIK, BK's K2.6.18.8 was compiled way later than the K2.6.18.1 used in the original 2-series puppies, in a woof attempt at pup218, and judging from the file name of the patched sources, there could be some patches omitted from this later version.

I have started looking into how to upgrade the kernel in 214X to K2.6.18.8, while ensuring all the original patches are preserved (comparing the patched sources of kernels used in 214/216 and BK's 2.6.18.8 with vanilla sources of 2.6.18.1 and 2.6.18.8) - might have a go at it in a week or two.

OTOH, if someone has a link to (or can provide) the complete kernel sources of K2.6.18.1 (of puppy 214 or 216), patches and all, I would be very much obliged :D :).

Cheers :)/

Thanks for all the congratulations you've posted, The ironic thing about it is that my wife who thinks that my time on Linux isn't real wold, but when I compare all the congratulations from Puppy Linux to her Facebook account, well they all almost the same. Even that I've never met any of you people, you've always gave me great support and for that I'm thankful, When I moved to Australia from Canada almost 10 yr ago for my wife, I left about 15 close friends behind, who I knew since grade 9 or less, Still to today my friends back home are still In Canada, and in Australia I really don't have any close friends what so ever. But thanks to the internet I have some here. Thanks all of you for the respect for my family well being.

I'd like you to tell your good lady wife, from me, personally, a big thanks to her, for allowing you to include all of us in your family!

Not real world?....of course it is, and I'm sure she secretly knows the real world effect you have had on so many peoples lives....by being friendly

Respect - well earned, my friend!

ttuuxxx, I don't know you that well but, I do admire your work. I find 2.14x infectious, it grows on you. Please don't work on glibc, for a second, on my account. I have reinstalled and unclicked updates for FF. I use a Belkin PCMCIA wireless card and it took me a while to rediscover that I have to use madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r4031-k2.6.18.1.pet that can be found here;

Thank you, tempestuous.

As an old guy, I hardly ever wish to be a different age than I am. However, where you are right now is a very special time. I'm sure you know that. Your friends are hoping you will take all the ttuuxxx and ttuuxxx family time you can get right now. I wish for you good memories to last you a lifetime. Make them well.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys :)
Here's a pic of her, she is 2 days old in the picture, Funny how the hair colour goes, all of my kids and myself started off with dark brown/black hair, then that usually falls out and gets replaced in a few months with very light blond hair for about 8-12 years, then it gradually turns to a light brown, dark drown, and then almost black and early grey.
Below is 2 pic's one is the baby and one is my 8yr old, so you can see that she's just starting to turn from blond to light brown, :)

Great kids. I'm sure occasionally you see something a little less but, they both look like angels in the pictures.

ttuuxxx, I hadn't paid much attention to your avatar. Guess who lives less than 20 miles north of Clermont and the Jim Beam distillery? Don't be surprised if when picking up a bottle you see a note from me. It's a small world.

Even though we live in bourbon country, my wife's mother and father are both from Bardstown (bourbon capital of the world) and both our fathers as well as other family members worked in distilleries, we prefer tequila, rum or gin.

Yes I like Jim Beam and also Canadian Club, But my favorite is aberlour scotch, if you ever get a chance to try some it really nice, usually I put the bottle in the freezer for 6+ hrs to thicken it and drink it straight. Its really nice when its really cold, it doesn't freeze. But its expensive usually around $50+ a bottle, I usually only buy it every couple of years for special occasions.
