Hi Nancy

I've never booted that way, so I'm in the dark, but I would think you would have to change your Bios settings, to have it use pcmcia as the first boot device. Do that and then save then settings and try it and see what happens.

Maybe I was not yet clear enough for I am not booting from usb (just pointed to the inbuilt possibility in Teenpup). I only use the pcmcia for reading and writing to usb drives ....?

Browser cache 5000? Holey Moley!!! 5 gigabytes?

Cache is usually set to 4->50 mb.

Can be changed in edit>preference>advanced.
Not sure you are correct about the 5 gigabytes meaning.

I just checked my Puppy 4.3.1 machine and it has

browser.cache.disk.capacity 4096

and edit>preferences>advanced indicates that that is 4 MB not 4 GB

I seem to remember, when using 214R with my IBM lappy, I had to modprobe pcmcia_yenta, or _cs, or _cardbus [or whatever code it was - long time ago  *] before modprobe ehci, uhci, in order to get usb in an adapter, in pcmcia slot to work
I think the reason was the pcmcia wasn't fully loaded before the usb tried to load?

* Don't forget also some lappy's don't have 32bit cardbus slots and will only work with 16bit adapters,
so check your pcmcia-to-usb adapter's compatibility

Hi Aitch,

Thank you for your concern but

usb (drives) slotted into pcmcia work in puppy 4 without any trick.

Besides I don't know anything about modprobing - I am an eternal newbie.

ttuuxxx,
you keep busy as always, KUpup, XO-OLPC, and now 4.60 :).

Please, don't let releasing 214XRC wait so long, so it gets abandoned  :). I know it's only a week since you mentioned RC:ing 214X :) (now).
No extreme hurry, though, just bumping 214X up :).

Cheers :)/

When I'm not building newer puppies for XO, 2.14X is my main os for surfing the net, I still think this is the best version of puppy yet :) It just works perfect for my systems at home. I'll try to focus on 2.14X this weekend also, Shouldn't take too long to make a newer release.

I agree with MHHP that it would be good to release a 214RC very soon, although I appreciate you have been very busy re-constructing Sydney recently. :-)

Like you, ttuuxxx, I am using 214X as my daily Puppy. See no need for another. It just works...and very well.

In a way it will be sad when 214X gets finished as it's been a great journey and I feel "the team" has worked really well. Not one cross word, very unlike other parts of this forum recently.

It's been a tough few days here. My girlfriend fell and broke her neck a few days ago and although she will recover fully it's been very traumatic. Nice to come back to the warmth of the 214X crowd here. It's not just another OS.

Cheers
Dave

Hi dave,
Sorry to hear about your GF, hope she recovers without any long term ill effects.
Who Knows I might spark up 2.14X with a CE edition, lol or even do some upgrades after I get the XO project up and going.

214 HD install

brymway wrote:
No matter what I do I cannot install this on the hd. I get a lot of "init is parent". Is there an extra file to add to the / dir, or is there something I should be adding to menu.1st

I have a 214X16 frugal install on HDD which boots perfectly with grub. The menu.lst reads...

Code: Select all

# Linux bootable partition config begins
title Puppy214X Frugal-ext3 (on /dev/hdb6)
rootnoverify (hd1,5)/214
kernel (hd1,5)/214/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=atahd PDEV1=hdb6 PUPMODE=12 SFSFILE=ext3,hdb6,/214/pup_214R.sfs ZDRV=ext3,hdb6,/214/zdrv_214R.sfs PUPSAVE=ext3,hdb6,/214/pup_save-214.3fs
initrd (hd1,5)/214/initrd.gz
# Linux bootable partition config ends
The subdirectory "214" on hdb6 contains
vmlinuz
initrd.gz
pup_214R.sfs
zdrv_214R.sfs
pup_save-214.3fs

Note you must use hdb not sdb, even if you have a sata drive!

Maybe you can adopt this to your setup?

Hi MHHP,
That's very kind. It's ups and downs but I know she will make it but it'll be so tough for her.
Nice to know how kind the folk here are. It keeps me sane at the moment.

Well dave we've been there, Like my wife about 1.5yrs ago had an operation on her spine, one of her disc was crushing a nerve, so they had to shave the disc and move the nerve. One error and she would of been paralyzed. Recovery took months, she was bed ridden for like 6 weeks after, So I was like super dad/husband for like 6 weeks. Sure she was hard to deal with, plus the added extra duties etc, but we worked at it, and well today she's in a lot less pain, still has some but she's working on it.

Hi guys, you've all been a great help in 2.14X, I've settled on a woof for Xo and also to continue fun with, Its puppy 4.3.1 renamed 4.60, You can fin the DL link http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=48984
I'm going to continue the regular desktop version and try to add OLPC to it, worst case I'll make 3 versions, regular puppy, XO, and the occasional retro. So feel free to join the thread and lend a hand for a good cause.
