Wow time flies only been 4yrs 8 months since the last update, and you guys figured 2.14x was dead, lol. Not yet it isn't!!
Ok this was stable release. I spent time around 100hr+ fixing things and working issues out, 2.14X has its limitations due to the kernel, like how large sata hardrives aren't recognized, This is my case with a new pc, so everything I updated I had to use a USB stick. grrr. Things like GlibC won't compile against this old kernel, But that's ok We don't need it for this stable release. The Next release will be a Alpha release, I will be "borrowing" GlibC from a large distro either slackware or Ubuntu/Debian So that we can use the latest browsers, I might have to get a new portable hard drive just for 2.14X.

Anyways here's what I did for this release, I hope you like the new Mimes and a few icons. :)

More Stable Release

-updated to gtk+-2.24.30
-added a calculator shortcut to xfcePanel
-fixed fontconfig by adding to /etc/fonts/fonts.conf
line 399 <cachedir>/var/cache/fontconfig</cachedir>
line 400 <cachedir>~/.fontconfig</cachedir>
-Updated installwatch <-- now GTK 2.0 packages correctly when compiled.
-added missing abiword icon
Compiled/Added Older GIMP, removed console version, added new splash screen and added lots of addons :)
-Added missing older JPG
-updated to openssl-1.0.2h
-changed some mimes.
-Change the bluemoon theme a bit
-recompiled Searchmonkey The desktop file was crashing My menu/Filesystem, now it doesn't :)

WOW what a large update, first I recompiled and updated gcc, then I updated the following, so that 2.14x is back to having bleeding edge status, The gtk2 used is most current version newer than any other puppy :), The only issues know is fontconfig, it still works fine, just gives a bit of error report in xerrs, not bad for updating all this stuff. I'll look deeper into it for the next release :)

Ok This one took a bit of patience and effort to put together, I updated and added a few libs so that I could use a newer ffmpeg the reason why is so that 2.14X could play mp4 movies, and as a added bonus flv videos work on gxine and also mkv(matroska) video formats now also work, no need to hunt for another player like vlc or mplayer, gxine now plays just about everything fullscreen. :) but it did add a few extra MB even after I removed x264 bin and saved 889kb. But the extra gain does outweigh the extra file size.
2.14X was always my main pick for my multimedia pc that I play movies on my 40" lcd tv but it was lacking mp4 so for a short time I used micko's slackware pup, now that it plays mp4 just fine, 2.14X is back in the front seat again :) yahooooo

what was changed/added
Updated Firefox from 4 to 6, hacked the plugins so that they can use version 6

Jeff

I built click on sfs / iso /2fs /3fs/lzm support on slackware 12.1 with ROX
doing on puppy will be much easier

for the time being I made two simple drag and drop scripts for mounting and umounting sfs so you could build easier to get started

the petget problem there is the fixed petget

but you would have to apply the patch instead to the version of petget your
version uses

I made an xvesa GUI with some more video options along time ago use it with vesion 216 xvesa
maybe the newer xvesa GUI would work too I havent tried

the links

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 02&t=25563

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 46&t=23633

two drag n drop scripts to make sfs mounting for the time being on older puppy versions

there is a app called xfilemount you would have to setup / tweek depending on
your version that would give full click mounting

call it mount_tool

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#simple drag and drop mounting tool for .sfs files
#just drag and drop sfs files on this script
#they will get mounted with the correct name
#at /mnt
#script by Joe Arose ...big_bass

#SFS
if echo `basename "$1" ` | grep -q '.sfs$'; then
                  mkdir -p /mnt/`basename $1`
mount -t squashfs -o loop,ro $1 /mnt/`basename $1`
cd /mnt/`basename $1`
 rox -d /mnt/`basename $1`

#EXT2
elif echo `basename "$1" ` | grep -q '.2fs$'; then
                  mkdir -p /mnt/`basename $1`
mount -t ext2 -o loop,ro $1 /mnt/`basename $1`
cd /mnt/`basename $1`
 rox -d /mnt/`basename $1`

#EXT3
elif echo `basename "$1" ` | grep -q '.3fs$'; then
                  mkdir -p /mnt/`basename $1`
mount -t ext3 -o loop,ro $1 /mnt/`basename $1`
cd /mnt/`basename $1`
 rox -d /mnt/`basename $1`

#ISO
elif echo `basename "$1" ` | grep -q '.iso$'; then
                  mkdir -p /mnt/`basename $1`
mount -t iso9600 -o loop,ro $1 /mnt/`basename $1`
cd /mnt/`basename $1`
 rox -d /mnt/`basename $1`
				  fi

call this unmount_tool

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#simple drag and drop unmounting tool for puppy files
#just drag and drop sfs files on this script
#the will get mounted with the correct name then unmounted
#at /mnt
#script by Joe Arose ...big_bass

mkdir -p /mnt/`basename $@`
umount /mnt/`basename $@`
rmdir /mnt/`basename $@`

Thanks bigbass I'll give it a shot :)
Also managed to get seamonkey compiled on it :) The latest release, what a ordeal that was, I was getting a error about pango font thing and so I must of recompiled pango, pangomm, glib, glibmm, gtk, gtkmm about 10 times, lol and finally I went and did a search like 5 different ways and guess what? lol Barry when he made this 2 series release the Seamonkeey which was in it had a bug, and Barry went to mozilla forum where I found his old post about the issues at hand and all he did was comment out some lines to overlook the bug, anyways when I was trying the latest seamonkey I noticed it was piggybacking off of the old series and thats whit it was finding the bug,lol I delete the old Seamonkey and boom the new one fired straight up, So there was nothing wrong with the compiled libs at all, what a waste of time, but I learn something along the way, when In doubt go straight to google

Updating 2 series

#4 Post by Roy »

Plus I wouldn't mind some eeepc sizes, what ever they are.
Almost all of the netbooks that I am aware of use 1024x600 screen resolutions, although I believe there are a few netbooks running distributions that will accept a scrolling 1024x768 screen (that allows access to the bottom of browser pop ups).

@big-bass
Nice work. At least when a sfs is mounted it is seen by the dot in rox.
For ease of operation, I added the mount_sfs in the customized menu.

However unmounting is a problem.

1 - the unmount in rox on right-click.
The unmount is done, but the empty directory stays with a normal directory icon.
This is nothing new as, as far as I recall, this has always been like this.

2 - your unmount_sfs
The unmount is done, but the empty directory stays, but still with the dot on it.

So you could add extra comfort to the whole operation by adding a delete in the unmount_sfs when the unmount is done.

EDIT
These scripts are only valid for type 3 sfs files, so don't work in Woof.

@ttuuxxx,
Don't be frustrated, you do a lot of development for puppy, which is much appreciated.
Maybe I should be ashamed as I hadn't realized you issued upup applications.
There are so many application presented scattered all over the forum, that it isn't easy to follow.
Also I did take the habit in Woof to use the search function in the Puppy Package Manager.

Nevertheless I think your initiative is worthwhile and I wonder if you couldn't ask to a moderator to add another forum next to the BUGS 5.x devs and the Usability Issues 5.x dev ones.
This way there is more focus on the Woof happening.

BTW Upadting 2 series I can't imaging you did drink too much Orval beer.

I missed spelled that work because it was like a 16hr day min working on this and it was like 5 am when I posted it, I was dead tired. So I didn't notice until you pointed it out, lol I try to be initiative, like the tabbed pet package manager, I find its way more user friendly, not so much text in your face straight away. Also I really like the Gnome Mplayer, thats a great little media player. I think it should replace Gxine, since fullscreen works, play list for m3u etc.

Ttuuxxx, I imagined something like this, but please take care of yourself and your family first.

Now for the the upup application business, as I am more in Woof now then in 4.x I am willing to do some testing.

If you want me to do something, please give me the references where I can find those upup applications.

That's welcome news. Puppy 2.17 has kernel new enough to run dual cores. However, versions 2.13-2.16 support net-booting (humongous initrd).

It works now with the type 4 sfs in upup I tested with before.
Now I tried with a type 3 sfs in upup and should get a message like: failed to mount. I know I probably am a PITA.

Hi Been that udf look good on paper, buttttttttttt it hasn't been updated since 2006, buttttttt I gave it a shot, first I had to update coreutils-7.4.tar.gz since for what it was asking for as been now changed to coreutils and because of that it wouldn't recognize it, grrr so I hacked the sources and omitted that check, which worked :) butttttttt as you work with the script it builds on the kernel, but the kernel is too new,lol So in a nutshell no can do. maybe on puppy series 1.

Well guys here's a sad note, It can't be done, I finally figured out that you can't edit a squash sfs series 2 file on series 4, so I downloaded 2.14R and made the pup_sfs file, that worked, to a point, XServer fails, Must be too much of the back end is updated and that xserver would have to be recompiled. Which I can't find barry's sources for that model, and I think I would be grasping at straws. So I'm going to abandon updating 2.15ce
Yes it was 2.15ce I had the iso 10+MB smaller with updated software, like the latest Seamonkey suite, I even had the latest Geany,Gparted, leafpad and the only extra application I installed was a full working latest Gimp and it was still 10MB smalller.
Butttt I started looking at 2.14R and guess what? That one I'll work on, lol Just a bit smarter this time, instead of updating over 40 packages at once and crossing my fingers, I'll do less this time, and not so radical, I managed to reuse the latest Seamonkey on it, I just had to update Glib due to the latest version I compiled because it needed gio. But it works just fine :)

2.14R now thats a interesting release and better base than 2.15ce the reason? well Xorg works on my LCD where as 2.15ce I had to use vesa at 10fps!!, and was really slow, plus my sata dvd burner boots using it:) Unlike 2.15ce I had to use a IDE dvdburner, because it wouldn't boot with sata.
So probably better to start fresh using 2,14r, grrrrrrrr what a waste of compiling and messing around time. Oh well you learn a bit as you go.

Sounds good. Dougal used to work on 2.14R together with Paul (pakt).

yes but the thing I've always disliked about 2.14r is that they messed around with the menus and it can't take things like icewm to work, I've spent hours trying to fix that mess up.Its not just related to etc/xdg or even the root menu, I replaced both areas with original 2.14 ones and still it doesn't work, fixmenus complains about missing things, once I get past this hurdle it should be smooth sailing. Well I hope so :)
