Glad to help. But I can't find a listing for an MFC-J125. Is that the right model number?

In Puppy (and other Linux distro's) you can't find what printer drivers are already installed unless you already have one of that brand iconnected. !!!

Thanks - Jerry

You can always run "Add Printer" and select the device "LPT1". You can then see the models supported by the built-in Gutenprint driver.

If your computer does not have a parallel port, use some other phantom device, like "socket://1.2.3.4".

Brother MFC-5895CW

#49 Post by sandy_bradley35 »

Hello,

Looks like you guys have been busy. Some great work here.

I have a network printer: Brother MFC-5895CW

After installing the debbi package, downloading the lpr and cuppswrapper, I followed your instructions for the printer setup, editing /etc/hosts, to no avail. Print jobs appear to be sending, but no printouts :(

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sandy

As a first test, you should connect it directly by USB and see what happens.

@sandy_bradley35: I would like to help you get your printer working, but you need to provide some feedback.

Hi,

Wondering how your free time is going and if you have got around to making a .pet for a MFC-J220 yet.

The Bro printer drivers work fine but the scanner not so.
XSANE cant find a scanner.
I tried your brscan3 .pet but no go.

Edit: Disregard the above.

I dont function well when I miss a night's sleep.
I started again and followed your instructions.
All good now.

BTW, Xsane scans a lot faster than Peasyscan.

Also the installed files don't show up in PuppyPackageManager.

Be aware that the debbi method auto-installs a printer in CUPS, while the PET does not.

That's true because the debbi method doesn't use the PPM. However the PET below will.

Just out of curiosity, what did you do wrong? the brscan3.pet is a one-click procedure.

I tested this with my Brother J415W and could not duplicate your situation. Scanning speed is determined by the backend and both programs are using the same brscan3.

However, I noticed something interesting about Xsane. When I first ran it, it claimed to be set on 200 DPI, but it actually scanned at only 100 DPI. So naturally, it was fast. But Peasyscan ran at its stated default 200 DPI. When I explicitly set both at the same resolution, their speeds were the same.

Note also that Xsane can auto-select the crop region, while Peasyscan cannot. So if you don't select the region in Peasyscan, it will scan the full page.

Have you enabled Preferences > Show Advanced Options?

I think I didn't reboot. I can't remember.

Yep, I have discovered that.
Xsane can auto-select the crop region
I noticed that when I compared the scans.

Thank you very much for the .pet.
That will make it easier for future installs.

Many thanks rcrsn51 !!

I am using Slacko 5.3 and following your instructions was able to install my Brother MFC7820 printer via USB connection on my Tosh TE2100 laptop. (Haven’t looked at the scanning side yet..)

The only problem I had was that I slightly misinterpreted your comment about using the “Tab Completion

The printer driver for the MFC-495CW can be downloaded from here. Click the smaller grey Download button on the left.

If you are using this unit as a wireless device, see the instructions on Page 1 for network printers.

For scanning, get the brscan3-0.2.11.pet on Page 2.

For network scanning, see the instructions on Page 1. You will need to run a command like:

Code: Select all

brsaneconfig3 -a name=Brother model=MFC-495CW ip=192.168.x.x

Hi rcrsn51,

I have found this topic useful more than once (thank you!). However, I repeatedly find that I miss the original instruction to “install debbi pet

Using your instructions I have been able to get a Brother MFC7820N scanner working on Lupu528 on an Acer Aspire one netbook.

Very valuable. Thanks once again. (and xsane saves straight to .pdf! Awesome!)

Point taken. I have added some boldface at the start.

Deleted.

For scanning, get the brscan2-0.2.5.pet on Page 2.

Many thanks. Both scanning and printing working perfectly now. I really love these Brother MFCs.

Hi RCRN

I've got Precise Puppy up and running, but can't get the printer working. It's a Brother HL-2130. I've tried following your instructions on the front page, and found the relevant .deb files for the printer, but nothing else seems to be working.

Could I trouble to make a .pet for this if possible?

Thanks for all you do to keep the community connected and working.

Can do. But first, I would like to find out what went wrong with your install. As a test:

1. I downloaded and installed the "debbi" pet.

2. I downloaded the two HL-2130 debs.

3. I ran

Code: Select all

debbi hl2130lpr-2.1.0-1.i386.deb
debbi cupswrapperHL2130-2.0.4-2.i386.deb
4. I checked in CUPS. An HL-2130 printer had been created for me that looked OK.

When you looked in CUPS, did you not see the printer? If it was there, did it not work?

Thanks for the extra instructions rcrsn. They worked a treat.

When I tried to follow the instructions on the first post, the only results I got in the console were "File could not be found" - or something similar. Anyway, these further instructions were very helpful.

So, for the benefit of others, and myself at some later stage, this is what I did:
D/L the .deb files and saved in 'root'
D/L the debbi.pet and installed
Opened a console and typed "debbi hl2130lpr-2.1.0-1.i386.deb" and 'enter'
Next, typed " debbi cupswrapperHL2130-2.0.4-2.i386.deb" and 'enter'.

Then Menu>Setup>Cups Printer Wizard>Yes
When the CUPS page opened, clicked on "Adding Printers and Classes">Add Printer and followed the prompts from there. My printer (Brother HL2130) was shown, so everything flowed simply from there, with the driver listed in the options.

Thanks again for your help and guidance. I'm a happy Puppy oncee again :D

Enjoy the day.
