mplayer dotpups to deal with DVD region problem

#1 Post by NewbornPupGuest »

Hi, just tried to play a DVD in gxine and it will play the very first track from the Universal Film woman to the menu--but I can't manipulate the menu and the keybindings don't seem to work well; so I can't play the film. Any help for this absolute newbie (besides counseling patience...)

I never figured that out... this is one reason, why I made a mplayer-dotpup:

There you can switch to different chapters with a rightclick.

Perhaps this is a bit off the topic, but playing encrypted DVD and VCD in Linux is made possible with the libdvdcss library from the videolan site.

http://developers.videolan.org/libdvdcss/

What does it mean? Turns your computer into a region-free DVD player. Sorry, I haven't installed it in Puppy, but thought it might help someone.

That lib is needed for any DVD that has regioncodes.
If I buy a starwars-DVD in germany, I cannot play it in german without that lib, as beside german the DVD contains english, turkish and so on.

It can be installed with Pupget.

I installed the mplayer from the link and it seems to be working fine. What is amazing is that I haven't dealt with computers in this way for years (probably since my old Sinclair) and I figured out quickly how to install and how to find it in the file architecture. I know I'm lame (just a geek) but the learning curve is great!
