Is there a modern color printer that works out-of-the-box under Puppy?

It is worth a few $$ ($25-$50) for someone to provide me a DotPup to match the recommended printer if special efforts are necessary to meet this need --
I really need this for the new business!

Here is what I need and I needed it yesterday:

1. No messy installation just plug it in and have Puppy recognize it.

2. Under $100. and currently on the market.

3. Cleanly prints specialty items like business cards, postcards, and small posters (5x8 or 8x11) using OO or other Puppy-friendly apps.

4. Prints photos nicely from Puppy.

5. Refillable color cartridges.

Here are nice-to-haves which I understand would drive up the price:

A. Copier.
B. Fax.
B. Scanner.

NOTE: I still need a DotPup for my Samsung Laser Printer.

Thanks! doc

Try a used HP Deskjet 640C (e-Bay?). There's lots of them about. Seem to work on almost anything. Only downside is that a tiny plastic part on the cartridge transport rack mechanism can break, especially during a paper jam. It costs about 2p/3/4c, but HP won't supply it - they demand a 50/70/$75 servicing when the proverbial five-year-old could fix it with a couple of cutlery knives and a junior screwdriver.

Bought a HP 4215 multi-function printer-fax-scan device today.

HP sent me here for a driver: http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/suplist.shtml

The device is not even listed but I am in hopes that the 4100-series driver will work on the 4200 series.

Will have to post a new Forum item asking for anyone familiar with HP drivers and Puppy.

Sure would be good to have an interactive DotPup into which one enters the HP printer model and it grabs the closest one and loads it -- same as the network card app.

Just received this great response from HP Support:

Thank you for writing back to us.

David the HP Officejet 4215 driver is under development process.
Currently linux is having support to HP Officejet 4100 All-in-One
driver, please download it and install it. The driver should work.

This should resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please
reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.

Have a good day !
Sincerely,
Cynthia HP Total Care

Now I just have to figure out how to load it in Puppy!

Downloaded the file and extracted using Guitar.

Then ran PupGet and Install Alien.

It stopped running and started fussing about it wanting to load into other than /usr, /etc, /root, or something like that and terminated.

I have no idea what to do next.

So, how do I load this driver package, please?

Help? Thanks! doc

which driver did you download?
Give me a link please.

I downloaded this hpoj and compiled it (without the Scanner- SANE-Backend).
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/hpoj/hpoj-0.91.tgz?download
from this page:
http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/download.shtml

It seems to be HPs Printing system.

But I cannot test it without a printer.
So you must do some tests.

Download this Dotpup (900 kb):
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Printing/HP-hpoj-0.91.pup

Install it.
Now you have a menue-entry in Dotpups, but it certainly will not work.
Also ROX opens with the folder
/usr/local/HP-hpoj-0.91

Right-click, -> open Xterm

In Xterm, type:
./run-xojpanel

This certainly will give you an error-message, copy it to a message please.

The Program requires QT, so install qt-3.3.4 with PupGet.
If you have Opera or KDE running, it is already installed.

Also read this document, and try to follow the instructions as far as you understand them:
file:///usr/local/HP-hpoj-0.91/doc/ptal-init.html

This is the "printer-daemon", that must run.

Mark

HPLIP DJ3320

Pending interruptions from the 3yr old, the new business, calls from the church, and various and sundry other adventures I hope to try and work though you instructions this evening.

Oh, I do have to get a sermon outline done before I start ... ooops! Wink

hm. the link you gave me, leads to another printing system.
but that has quite hefty requirements, like python and cups.
i have python installed, but no cups.

I would have to search the board for that, I think Rarsa was deeper into that.

But I will go to weekend in some hours, so please try first the Dotpup I made.

Would be fine if that quite small solution would work.

Greets, Mark

Finally got a few minutes to get back to this.

The error is the classic: "No such file or directory."

Did I hear my name?

Oh, yes, CUPS.

My instructions to install CUPS include a driver for HP inkjet printers

doc- do us all a favor... forward this email to HP Investor Relations
http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/investor/board.html
and tell them there are 40 million Linux users worldwide who are getting mighty unhappy with this perpetual runaround... and could they kindly give this 'development process' a little push?
(You might also mention that the HP Total Care system ad on their website
http://www.hp.com/
clearly shows a North American woman taking your tech call, and your email was apparently not written by someone from this hemisphere, and do they think they will win the J.D. Power and Associates CS award again any time soon?)

this is kinda interesting... out of curiosity, I looked in at the (well-heeled) ubuntu forum to see what luck they are having with printers.

here's a current thread :Could someone recommend a well supported linux printer please?
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=101484

they seem to be doing better with Lexmark Samsung etc than you'd think, but basically like HP. The enthusiasm here is not echoed in their wiki however:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters

bottom line I couldn't find anybody that had a multi-function fully working; but they may help some Puppies out with driver info for the dreaded CUPS...

shure, you are in the right folder?
type "pwd" to check that.

And
cd /usr/local/HP-hpoj-0.91
to go there.

If you stll get the error, pleasetype "ls -l" and post the output.

OK. Made a clean install of GrafPup 1.0.6 and got all the way to the CUPS Admin and sent a Test Print.

Nothing prints so I look at Jobs. Nothing active so I look at completed and it says it is a 15k file and has been "aborted". I click on Restart Job and get "client-error-not-possible"

Ideas, please? Thanks! doc
