I downloaded and installed following packages:

1 - Rox 2.9
Went to the funny install of 2.8 first then 2.9
- Lost the option listview and small icons. Had to redo this.
- My OOo48 size icons were very small. Had to redo the set icon for every desktop icon of OOo
- Had a strange issue. Clicking on the desktop gave me the original background, but correct icons. Clicking again gave the Woof background with wrong icons.
Discovered that a restart X-server had to be done. Missing in the instructions?

2 - Gnome-Mplayer
Seems to work, but haven't tested very long

3 - Gnome-games
Seems to be ok, but did play them all. Would take a week or so. lol

4 - Galculator
- Very nice. Like it.

5 - Puppy-Package-Manager-1
- installed ok, but I don't see any effect.
Don't know what to expect, but hadn't the example of the screen shot with the tabs

6 - Pidgin
Didn't install as I was at 2.5.5 already through the repo.

7 - libpng
Didn't install as I don't have FF3 nor Opera

8 - Gimp and Gimp-Xsane
As I have a working Xsane, didn't want to compromise, so didn't install

But something strange is going on.

When I look in the Puppy Package Manager, I expected to see those newly installed packages.
They're not displayed, but I have empty lines(and as far as I can see corresponding to the nr of packages installed) When clicking on it I am asked to confirm uninstalling package "". So I didn't click.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

The new gimp looks nice... I'll sink my teeth into it soon. I also installed the gnome games, hours of fun there  , but not for me, the young bloke can have a go at them! I also installed Htop, nicer interface than Top in my opinion, easier to read.

When there is more I'll get more!

yes Htop is nice I compiled that for 4.2, Thats the only puppy release with it, way better than top. :)
The card games are great, I like them a lot so many to choose from.
The new Gimp is nice but I miss the menu's like "file" on the left and right UI's just the main window has all the menus now.

Hi Jim just download this file and extract it anywhere and run it, it should install the latest Java for you.

If it doesn't, next time on upup I'll make a package.

ttuuxxx,

I've tried numerous times to install java before on upup with no success. However, thanks to your link, it installed properly on upup one time. Later the pup-save file was corrupted and I've tried numerous times with other pup save files. Each time had this "Error: /root//jre1.6.0_13/bin/java not found Java is NOT installed."

Hope that you will make a .pet and that Barry will include it in the repository.

Thanks,
Jim

EDIT: I removed failed installation of java from the pup-save and then your link installed properly again. Thanks.

Hi all,

I am in the process of getting the Special Source ( a patched source such that conky plays nice with Rox) for conky such that Pwidgets will run in upup. Upup has newer libs and because of this, conky compiled in 4 series will not work.

In the mean time I compiled conky-1.7.0 for Upup only!

BE WARNED<---- This is the first time I've compiled and stripped an app. It works fine for me. Use at own risk. ***NOT*** compatible with Pwidgets, although you could try at own risk

It is only the conky exec and a simple .conkyrc file.

Hello again.

Well I recompiled conky-1.6.1 with the Special Source and now I have Pwidgets-2.0.8 running in Upup. I renamed it pwidgets_upup-2.0.8.

Changes from Original Pwidgets:
  • Removed old conky
    added recompiled in Upup conky
removed all libs (dependencies for conky, newer libs are present in Upup)

Thanks to Sigmund (zigbert) and Patriot and the Pwidgets team

    You need this wallpaper setter

EDIT: Pet removed.. newer version... see my next post

WARNING:Test and use at own risk... backup upupsave before installing
IMPORTANT: Please remove conky-1.7.0 if you have it. If you try to install Pwidgets over this the results could be fatal. You've been warned 8)

tested in upup-476 (standard kernel)

Oki - tried the GBPup icontheme/bg/Rox29. Very nice job on the mimes (as far as I got), but .. driveicons, scaling and a dysfunctional pmount went a little amok (and the nice dim bg on the gtk I generally use went lite :| , turq41 is not real robust in some ways) .. and I'm actually leaning more towards some of the Smooth-Color icontheme. For me on 476std it's all a bit too fragile. Quite possibly I got the 'tricky' part wrong or Rox got riled or :| (nice mimes like that I haven't seen since a long-ago fling with the EZpup).

.. ya, a bit late here but maybe try again after 090608 (BK says new bugfix'd alpha then and hopefully an xdelta to go with) on a fresh liveCD

Yes coolpup and Prescott compiling technique. But Barry has his own Compiling technique he would like us to use also, which is
http://www.puppylinux.com/blog/?viewDetailed=00703
"The requirements are that you must compile it in Upup (Jaunty Puppy). It is done in the usual way, for example:

Howto create a PET package
# ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --build=i486-pc-linux-gnu
# make
# new2dir make install

The 'new2dir' utility creates a directory of the installed packages, though do note it isn't perfect and needs to be manually checked. Some packages do not work at all well with 'new2dir'.

We then have 'dir2pet' which will convert a directory into a PET package, for example:

# dir2pet abiword-1.2.3 "

I still think we should be compiling as i386 and not i486 due to the fact every puppy release on distrowatch says that puppy is i386 and also that Upup is based on i386 etc. plus with --enable-shared --enable-strip usually helps unless your building a static library.

I came across this Ubuntu/Debian package search program, It looks really good, I'm not using upup/dpup right now so I can't get it going, but I reduced the size of the package and made a pet, you'll probably need apt-cache installed, but really it looks real good. :)

Cheers.

NB. If you are having problems with the package manager in upup-476 try this:

1. install dotpet
2. uninstall dotpet using P.P.M.
3. Restart JWM
