Unnamed puplet 1.1 (kernel-2.6.29.1)
Posted: Sun 26 Apr 2009, 01:37
This is an inofficial patched version of wows puplet:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=39154
I did not use Puppys buildsystem, instead modified the existing puplet by hand.
It uses Kernel 2.6.29.1, from here:
http://puppylinux.com/blog/?viewDetailed=00667
I used wows .config from 2.6.28.5 as a base, ran "make oldconfig" and answered the few questions that came up.
This kernel includes Squashfs4.
It does not yet support lzma compression.
It is incompatible with older squashfs files.
To convert old ones, place them in a temporary folder.
E.g. /mnt/sda1/test_411.sfs
Then type:
cd /mnt/sda1
unsquashfs34 test_411.sfs
This creates a folder squashfs-root.
Rename it to test-sq4, then type:
dir2sfs test-sq4
This creates a new test-sq4_411.sfs.
-----------------------------
I was NOT able to compile the better "aufs" unionfs driver, so slightly modified initrd.gz, to force the use of the original unionfs instead.
As we have bad experience with the reliability of older versions, I'm very unhappy with this.
We must have a very critical look on how it behaves with whiteout files.
-----------------------------
I compiled no extra-modules.
I simply renamed /etc/modules/firmware.dep.2.6.28.5 to firmware.dep.2.6.29.1.
So I don't know, if new firmware is handled correctly.
I uploaded also a re-squashed devx. The content is identical with the old one.
I added linux-2.6.29.1-sq4_411.sfs. This is pretty huge, as it includes the precompiled kernel and modules.
I was not certain what could safely be deleted, so packed everything.
I compiled a new fglrx module for Ati Catalyst 9.3. This required to apply a patch for the fglrx wrapper module. The patched source will be extracted to /lib/modules/fglrx/, once you installed the pet and activated it in the included patched xorgwizard.
I did not include other updates.
So mesa and other drivers are the same as in the original puplet.
I will release more graficsdrivers next weekend or earlier on request.

I did not check the checksums on the server, so please check them on your own after download.
Please let us know, if this kernel is an enhancement, or creates new problems.
If it has no advantages to 2.6.28.5, I'd prefer to stay with that one for a while, e.g. because of "aufs".
I do not plan, to maintain this puplet "as such", as it is wows creation, so please post requests concerning Ultrapup in wows thread. (I am too busy enough to fix the issues for NYP).
I just release this kernel for Ultrapup first, as this shall help, that both puplets stay compatible in future, and wow currently has no time to release a new kernel himself.
This thread here is just intended for issues related to the new kernel
