Great news about the .sfs's, I will be giving them a good test shortly.

As you know I do some work with netboot at the Mission Cybercafe Project

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=41363
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=39321

Ive been thinking how this could be used in hansamben.

In schools, the computers are already often networked. Once a netboot server (pxe) is setup on one of the computers, it is possible to boot the other computers attached to it.

Im thinking of the situation where a school network is inoperable, the teacher could simply boot one computer with the disk, and then the other would boot by pressing the (F12) key. As most classes only last an hour, this would mean that the class could do something useful with the time even though HSB is not even installed!

One of the aims of the Mission Cybercafe project is also to produce a smoothwall distro that, when set up, acts as a webfilter and a netboot server, allowing diskless clients attached via a simple hub/switch to boot from it.

There is no reason that an educational version could not be made, netbooting HSB instead of a cybercafe setup. This would make it very simple for teaching staff with low levels of I.T. literacy to setup a instant "teaching lab/learning suite" instead of a cybercafe.

Any thoughts?

i've been in touch with jrb creator of Choice Pup, he's also tested it. It will load on the fly, but not unload on the fly. It apparently is something to do with KDE apps. I dont know that much about it.

Little Wizards pet is on the forum somewhere i have seen it in the past, just working on Etoys at the mo and it looks great . I'm out tonight earning some pin money, and tomorrow, i will have it soon though.

Then i will update the one click install and look at L2TP etc and i want to get a Spanish version to send to Plan International as i sponsor a kid in South America and on visiting 4 years ago they had their first PC in the school, dont know what was on it, but i reckon a couple oof these to PLAN would be useful. I should bother my ass to write to her!.

I packaged etoys sometime last week & posted it in two separate packages. The minimal pet was <10MB and the extras ~15MB with locales source and examples.

Another good game for older kids would be PyScrabble and some Sudoku variant.

Note on KDE apps: A lot of them try to stay "preloaded" to minimize startup times... thus the sfs will not be able to unmount because a file is in use (would have to kill its "daemon" or whatever in pprocess first)

p.s. My kids (4&2) keep bugging me to play "the hand game" so I guess I will have to make a go at packaging childsplay soon. Since I replaced their Xubuntu installs with HSB all I hear is "the hand game" "the hand game"... it runs much smoother though on their $75 DECtops (Geode gx2 500 with 128mb ram)
Check out my github repositories. I may eventually get around to updating my blogspot.

:D Hello, Had a go at Childsplay a while back, got it working but never made a (working) pet.
Petting up all the SDL and Python stuff was throwing me, and I got sidetracked..
Also I think there is one (a pet) now...
Couldnt D/L your Etoys, so I tried the `Doze version in Wine...Worked fine for what its worth..

ljfr has it working her after a couple of people (including myself) tried and failed http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=40291 I even posted a question on how to package a python app, confident that i was able to do it http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=41222.

I was half way there with Etoys anyway so pressed ahead anyway after reading Technosaurus's post, then made it into a sfs. I,ve yet to test the sfs. Its one sfs at 24m (51m expanded). I'll test tonight.. I couldnt help playing with it, easily sidetracked.

I have done a sfs of squeakland Etoys

http://www.ecomoney.eu/hsb/ and ttp://www.filefactory.com/f/232345d22fd35293/

Technosaurus's pet is split, if i may i will quote the location:
I repacked the deb from Lobster's link here:
http://puppylinux.asia/members/T/486_pet/Etoys.pet (~9mb)
http://puppylinux.asia/members/T/486_pe ... addons.pet (~15mb)

I split out the source, examples and additional docs and locales to the addons pet. I did leave some of the basic tutorials in the main pet however, so it should be ok to get started.

I really like this effort....makes me smile.
A happy OS.

I have given a few copies away around my area.
The looks on some people though when I have said it
is free are just priceless.

One kindergarden liked it though because they are running
Ubuntu. ...because of previous Windows problems.
So they got it.
And when I showed them how to hide the menu,
they really liked it.
That keyboard shortcut though should be listed somewhere,
or did I miss it??? with a warning that it would be hard to unlock.

You should make a kiosk edition...internet cafe.
With lockdown.

This was a good one...made in Sydney.

Anyway, a really great effort.

I also gave one away here..

Keyboard problems, hmmm...

Since the finest English-language keyboard there is happens to be Dvorak, and I got so used to it doing anything in QWERTY is painfully slow...

And it's the default keymap on exactly 0 distros. (especially M$)

I would think, since the kids are just learning to type, why start them off with a dinosaur keymap like QWERTY?

It just entrains and entrenches some really poor typing habits that would require a week or more of replacement habit training.

The last time I tried to buy a keyboard with the Dvorak keymap printed actually on the keys, I discovered that I would have to special order one.

That was ten years ago.

The first two shops I asked at, the clerks just stared at me with vacant looks in their eyes. I knew straight off that they hadn't ever heard of it.
The special order price was $20 USD and I ended up buying a QWERTY used, cleaned and repackaged, for $3 instead.

But I'm already used to Touch Typing, you see. Somebody who has never touch typed would have the initial habit of looking at the keys and would type s and expect s. Instead of "o".

Perhaps with enough schools ordering it set up like that, we could create enough demand that the hardware manufacturers will take note.

Also hopefully by the time the tykes are entering the job market, perhaps the industries will have gotten used to a Better Keymap and they wouldn't have to ask permissions to reset their keymap, like to take the entrance examination.
"um. Sir, I should very much like to change the keymap on the computer to a Dvorak to take my exam, if that meets your satisfaction"

"No. And did I mention, Hell No. What's a 'Dvorak' anyway?"

(Simply taking the keys off and repositioning them to the right map doesn't work. I tried.)
He who skydive without parachute, jumps to own conclusion.

Got it Puppylvr and will put it in (although it annoyed the hell out of my after a while, but i'm 41 and grumpy).

Had a play with the delayedrun script. Firepup doesnt support Bareview, so i will change it simply to Firefox as well as the Help files.

Going to get my act together and get the full sorted, then the Lite which i'll add Dillo for Help files and lock it down so as to run as a kiosk\pure Livecd.

There is a min Gnome on the asia server, when that is up a running again i will grab them and look at games for gnome (sfs). Also had the heads up that there is a new version of Scratch at the end of the month, then theres the sign language etc.

Going to do a French version, we are having a French girl stay with us for 3 weeks, my ma's friends daughter (my ma lives in France) to improve her English and help me with the 3 tykes, i will see if i can recruit her!.

It was brought to my attention that there is a new SFS databse by JRB (choicepup). I've posted the 3 ive done there, which you are already aware of. Just thought when it grows it may be worth a toot.

PYscrabble. Is it still going. Installed the doze version, it found 2 public servers, which it then couldnt connect to. After a quick google i couldnt find any more. Anybody play Pyscrabble?

(although it annoyed the hell out of my after a while, but i'm 41 and grumpy).
Yea, we get that way sometimes at our age..LOL
Since you can only kill it from the CLI, you might want to create an apprun script for it so clicking the menu item again closes it...
Also, you can run multiple instances, and a whole herd of puppies chase it till they merge..The kids love it.. :D

French version? Yes !!!

#132 Post by cj.veniot »

Hello Sidders,

Our own little one goes to a francophone school and after-school daycare. If you get a French version going, I can definitely offer up some testing time, and find some testers.

BTW: still working on documentation based on feedback from friends. The latest work includes documentation on how to use a wakepup boot floppy for booting off a computer that simply refuses to boot from CD. I'll aim for documentation that can be viewed via Dillo (and any other heftier browser.)

ljfr

Just had a look at the site (with the help of babelfish), it looks amazing. With babelfishes limitations, i gathered it is for a classroom enviroment similar to Edubuntu.

Where it says
Cycles 1, 2 et 3
by the application. I assume this is the level or age group. Am i right, Marie doesnt fly in until next week and i had better give her a couple of days to acclimatize (coming from a village in Brittany to an indeustrial town in the north of England) :o

For le terrier application:
Roughly Cycle 1 = from 2 to 5, Cycle 2 = from 5 to 7,
see http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89cole ... _en_France
for more detail -in french.

There is a network version but also an Abuledu distro for single desktop, description here:
http://www.abuledu.org/abuledu/monoposte
you can get it from here:
http://gforge.ryxeo.com/frs/download.ph ... loader.php
It's a 694 M LiveCD , with all classic apps: Gcompris, KTuberling, TuxPaint, TuxMath, Leterrier apps, OpenOffice, Firefox ... all in french.

BTW, ASRI Education is also currently working on a french remaster with educational apps (see forum french section).

Made the installer, it will prompt for a password "Wipehdd" so there can be no accidents and no other way to start it (thx to Muggins). I cant get a keyboard shortcut to it, despite having done it before, X freezes. The other shortcuts work. So i have put a shortcut in the My Applications folder. Going to burn it and test it.

Keyboard shortcut to Hidemenus as before and another to restoremenus.

Just been thinking about the Pwidgets, about just getting a clock on the desktop without all the other bumf. A kiddie clock if you know what i mean.

the pwidgets file that executes xonclock
/root/.pwidgets/pwidgets-exec_xonclock

and the config file
/root/.xonclockrc

I'd recommend the puppy clock skin ;) (it may be better for it to have numbers though - for learning purposes)

One other thing I would like changed.

Wishlist for all Puplets.
Change the original file name you base it on.

pup_412.sfs changed to

pup_sfsh.sfs etc or similar.

""""""""

The same with the save file.

Stops the conflicts.

Muppy = MSY_084.SFS

'''''''''''''''''''

Otherwise an outstanding release.

Regards.........Chris.
