Forum backups and general health

#1 Post by JohnMurga »

Hi,

Much has been said on the subject of backups and longevity of the forum ...

I thought I had left a note on this subject on Barry's site, but I guess I might have nessed it up.

Backups ... The forum gets backed up automatically every week to a different server (different host), however, as Pizzasgood mentioned if anything fatal was to happen to me it might be a little difficult to recover things (thankfully we don't have 18 wheelers here, coz that didn't sound nice).

However the database does contain some information that is confidential, so what to do ...

Well, I have decided to give access to the backups to Flash and Barry (should the unthinkable happen).

When it comes to the server ... Puppy is so popular that it does suffer under load quite a lot right now ...

However, the server is due for an upgrade in May/June, and after that we'll have over double the power and a full set of OS upgrades, so things will be much better than they are now.

I have set the time aside for the new server setup tasks, so hopefully I'll also get time to resolve a few of the other niggles and give the mods a way to reboot the box if it crashes.

Thanks for your understanding

Cheers
JohnM

Thanks for your work, John. You have put together what is certainly one of the more effective and responsive forums.

And many thanks to all who have contributed such useful help.

Good to hear you are alive and well, and looking to improve the board. May things forever remain that way too!

Atentamente,

Todd Richardson

John,

I am concerned about the use of the words 'general health' in the title. I
pray all is well for you.

And thanks for your extremely valuable contributions.

John:

I know I have had a whine occasionally;
when I should just stick to wine.

However, your efforts have always been appreciated.

Do we need to do any fund raising for you?
Of course I am used to using people up,
but if you are in need of donations please tell us.

I hope that you are indeed in good health.
Just remember though, if you don't look after yourself
and I ever have to nurse you and give you the
' kiss of life ' you'll want to die.

And yes that thought scares me to.

All the best.........regards Chris.

Indeed, with so many eloquent people in this forum, I can can only say thanks for setting up this forum John. You're not paid, you're a volunteer, but you still dedicate your time to it. Seriously John, thank you. I've learnt so much from here. All the best to your health, your life, your future. Many blessings!

Hi,

My health is fine, and many thanks for your concern and kind words :-)

Some people where worried and I wanted to cover the "what ifs".

As far as the forum is concerned I have to thank all the people who help make this place special.

Specially the moderators, it is they who do most of the work ...

They are the heroes that work hard here every day.

All I do is make sure it stays up, and I don't always do that all that well.

But thanks again for your support.

Cheers
JohnM

PS : I don't need donations ... Except maybe for a beer or two now and then ;-)

Thank you from me also, John ~ glad to know all is well with you.

Barking for myself, these forums have provided a valuable and probably irreplaceable resource for Puppy-hungry kennel-dwellers and i thank many of you for the help you've unwittingly given me, a total Linux ignoramus.

I'm aware of the random instability and downtime experienced lately (eg. last night i was unable to access the site), however we now have Todd Richardson to thank for an alternative venue, so one way or another, our tails should be covered.

WOOF! :D
