Perhaps a note could be put on the web page explaining how to fix the bug, until a corrected version can be uploaded.

Good idea. Done. I don't know how to put it on the main page, but it is on the download page at puppylinux.org. If there was an actual fix posted (instead of just downgrading), someone let me know and I'll change it.

It would be best not to talk about downgrading, SirDuncan. There is an update posted in the 4.2 Patches & Updates thread on the forum. It is a sticky at the top of the Additional Software (Pups, 'n Stuff) thread:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=40537
Posting a link to that on the Downloads page at puppylinux.org would be the way to go. Since you have Editor privileges, will you do a link to the update instead?

Ok but its not the Seafox theme, its like 5 different themes+code I blended together Smile Seafox is the most noticeable on the browser. But if you look at the mail, composer, menus, bookmarks its not Seafox.

I thought there must be a fix by now, but my search for "Abiword bug" resulted in a thread saying to downgrade Abiword, followed by a fix, followed by someone saying that the fix didn't actually work. I should have known to search for "4.2 patches" instead. Anyway the page is now pointing to the aforementioned thread.

Is that really all of the patches so far? Between all the hubbub and the length of the bug report thread (which I must admit that I have not read), I thought there must be more. It certainly doesn't seem like enough to justify another release yet.

Hi SirDuncan
Within days there was a fix that I put together its basically an earlier version of abiword, with updated features so it can open/write .docx format and also has templates for resumes etc, Thats the best we are going to get due to the fact the latest Abiword uses a older default font called 'Tymes' now and we don't have that font installed by default in puppy and so all this drama happened. Abiword didn't make any noticeable announcements to this at the time and it compiled fine, and opened/created docx format at the time also, but ecomoney was to lazy actually do any testing of abiword when it was in the beta/rc release for like a month and after 4.2 was released it was evident that abiword pulled one over us and ecomoney was in full blame/shame mode etc.

I think that releases of Puppy should NOT be pushed to be released by such and such date! I followed along in the development, error reporting and additions with their own revisions and it is my opinion that the timeline on the release of Puppy 4.2 was a major factor in the unrest.
I have a sign on my wall at home that says:
If you don't have time to do it right,
How will you find time to do it over.

Pushing for a release date on ANY version of Puppy before sufficent testing for errors has been done and inclusions for a new release have the bugs swashed is not the way to go.
There are those that cannot seem to wait.
We will always have them.
Time needs to be taken to do it right.
Screw the proposed release date.

That said, I think WhoDo did a good job concidering all he had to do in the rushed time he had to do it in.
WhoDo is number one in my book!

Thanks for doing this Tuxxxx...this has gone a long way to "shutting me up"! for the time being. Whodo will have even less work to do now to get those buggy ISO's replaced at www.puppylinux.org Very Happy

Im really sorry I have to go out again and still cant reply to them all.....guess Im just too busy "contributing nothing to the puppy community" lol

Ive got a new signup for puppy, and this time round I get to format VISTA again!

But I will be back soon. Im encouraged by the recent more constructive tone to this thread.

Agreed, that is absolutely correct - and for reasons that are obvious, that just has to be the case. Puppy Linux has to be neutral as far as user-specific requirements are concerned - otherwise how could a base version get built?

So Rob has to accept that this is the case. Having said that, there is no-one stopping him from asking around the forum for help with his specific requirements. Thing is, he has no mandate to lead Puppy Linux from the front in any sense. If anyone wishes to join him in producing a derivative, then that is up to the individual contributor.

Also to be borne in mind is that anyone who is willing to lend a hand with any specific issue is donating his time free-of-charge and in no circumstances is to be criticised, insulted, or complained at in any way whatsoever, should the results of his efforts appear apparently to fall short of expectations.

I don't blame either Ttuuxxx or Whodo for their annoyance as a result of the current unwarranted criticisms concerning 4.2

I would have been very annoyed myself if this had been directed at me.

I think you may have misunderstood the consequences of ttuuxxx's generosity, Robert. I have absolutely NO INTENTION of posting the updated 4.2 ttuuxxx has created at puppylinux.org in lieu of "those buggy ISO's" you have so much contempt for. They are staying exactly where they are until I create the 4.2.1 update on the timeframe I have already outlined here. "He who has ears to hear let him hear" - Matthew 11:15

You are evidently so obsessed by those ISO's at our mirrors, Robert, that I believe for you they have become an irrational symbol of the fact that you do not control either the direction of Puppy or this community! The ISO's stay! I can't say it plainer than that. Perhaps you had better read the WHOLE thread instead of only those posts you think are in your favour.

@ttuuxxx - Your action was well intentioned my friend, but a mistake nevertheless. You cannot defeat terrorists by acceding to their wishes and you do none of us any favours by letting Robert think he has had a victory. It only serves to reinforce in his mind that his bullying tactics are "successful", and so ensures that he will continue to employ them. Notice how he apparently only "has respect for you"(sic) now, when you seem to be doing exactly what HE wants?

Since when is using Puppy, and the hard work of the community of developers, to pay your own way considered to be "doing something for the Puppy community"? The link you provided simply points to your own self congratulatory publicity, Robert!

Honestly, guys, am I the only one who can see how deluded this guy has become?

Robert, I intend to keep pointing out instances of your deliberate misinformation while ever you continue posting such tripe. You do remember what "tripe" is, don't you?

Isn't tripe where BS is made?

Ecomoney, consider this. If you are a certified MS system builder, then, by their EULA, you are resposible for all OS support. It is clearly stated. If OTOH you purchase a licence as an end user then Microsoft is responsible. With that in mind, shouldn't all critique by your clients be directed at you? You know what I'm refering to, all else see the Firepup 4.3 thread.

If you endorse anything, and it could be an outboard motor, or a jar of makeup, or a rocket ship, then, surely you (as in the endorser) should cop some responsibility. If I buy an icecream and it has lumps in it, do I scream at the manufacturer? NO. I take it back to the shop where I bought it and demand a refund.

Now, did you purchase a Puppy Licence? No. Are you you in business? Presumably, yes. What I see that you are trying to do is produce without production costs... hmmmmm. We all try to minimise costs. Raw materials do come at a cost, unless you are a recycler (ah yes, I'm hearing it now... "but I am a recycler!"). Puppy is not, and will never be a recycled OS. Sure it can run on recycled kit, which, for a guy like you, is a bonus.

Granted. Times are a little tough. Does that give anyone the right to express negativity toward a free, as in beer, and free as in freedom, resource? Half a dozen bugs and you can't wait to get in the pest control. I'd hate to see you in the tropics!

The point is this. Unless you are sure of your product, and I mean have full confidence in it, don't sell it. Don't direct poor souls who you sold it to, to us. Deal with it yourself. Know your product. It's Business 101.

(Please note I did not moan and groan about all the thousands of hours put into Puppy by volunteers, not to mention the dollars, pounds, pesos, euro.. bla bla.....)

Have a nice day Smile
