Whoops!

Here's an updated info_get that uses '.tar.gz' instead of '.tgz'

I've also added lsmod, elspci, dmidecode and ddcprobe to the info collected.

Strange, I posted this yesterday and it appeared in my browser, now it's gone. :?

Big Bass, I owe you an apology, wireless keyboard works.

The startup resolution of the boot window appears to be larger than any other I tried.
I could not see the boot: line it was off screen!

So typing puppy pfix=ram was actually there but I never actually got round to pressing enter, I assumed the keyboard wasn't working. Pressing enter made it scroll up and slaxer to load.

Working very nicely now. :D

My keyboard still doesn't work with Barrys Woof build though. :(

SCSI boot

#96 Post by BanBan »

Hello Big Bass,
I have made a full install of slaxer_pup on an old pc, pentium III 500 Mhz, 128 Mb ram and a SCSI HD Quantum Atlas 20Gb driven by an Adaptec card.
All works perfectly, I can boot on HD.
Now I have Puppy on that old machine Thank you.
PS: excuse my bad english

Yes, I also find the two threads for SlaxerPup confusing - difficult to know which to post in

Perhaps it would be better if Joe closed one and continued in the other ?

Hey Paul

Well, I prefer everyone post here
in this thread but to follow the "norms"
I started a thread in Derivatives
as a just in case

Paul , I havent compiled a module with just using the kernel headers on puppy *make sure you dont overwrite the older ones just linking

if you give a link with the module sources you need to compile I 'll try also

also it's good way to sort that out
as a mini how to

I want to make a minimum add on for compiling modules if possible since the uncompressed source was around 160MB

I'm pretty sure I did overwrite the older ones, but that's no big deal - I'll make a new save_file.

post responses here in cutting edge I updated the older post
so there is no mis matched info

Hey Paul (pakt)
I don't want to hold you up any longer if you need to compile a module

UPDATED to be a pet package
only this is needed to compile your module

I re compiled the kernel and here are the actual
headers
http://puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass/Sla ... slaxer.pet

there is a readme but I'll post it here also

*********************************
notes on slaxer_pup
these are a "reduced" meaning not the full 21 MB include but complete
set of source headers taken directly from
the kernel source that compiled slaxer_pup 412
with the end goal of just the most needed
headers for making modules

you can not compile a kernel with these
that would require a 680MB of the full
uncompressed sources

I custom made this package then made it a "pet"
for easy installation for "puppy"
************************************

P.S Paul I couldn't get passed the second screen in the NVIDA installer
since it self checks if you have the card installed and I dont have the card

and thats a big installer script but if it looks for /usr/src
headers it will find them now ......I hope

well if someone else has to try
with nvidia

1.) install the above "pet" headers
note:they will only work on slaxer pup 412
because it has a different kernel compiled

shutdown >Exit to prompt
cd to where the installer script was then

Code: Select all

./NVIDA*
as a short cut so you don't type the whole thing

man if that allows module compiling that is a 2.4 MB pet
compared to the massive full sources needed
so let me know how it goes

progress report about the above post

some info to why it took me a couple days to custom build the above headers

I patched and recompiled the kernel on slaxer_pup412
to give the compiler a work out

well all was fine until my pup save filled up

well some stale files were made that I ignored
at the time which wouldn't allow me to finish the new recompile

I tried deleting those stale files but nothing worked
even tried live cd it was a no go

then I thought about the corrupted files
and did a live CD boot and selected

Code: Select all

puppy pfix=fsck
that does a filesystem check on pup_save (and host part. if ext2),

and that's cleaned up the stale files and I could easily delete the folders :D

well since it takes a long time to compile I walk away from
the computer and the screen saver borks the compile

so I made a small script placed in /root/Startup
called kill_screen_saver

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
xset s off -dpms
I found that in a forum post I'll post the link when I find it again

and now the recompile worked fine 8)

some backstage problems I usually don't discuss
but thought it may be helpful
if you got stuck there too

Hey Joe, thanks for all the trouble you've gone through to make the kernel headers pet :P

I started with a new pup_save file and your kernel headers pet installed fine.

I tried your suggestion to run the Nvidia installer like this:
# ./NVIDA*
but I got a 'no permission' error.

I then ran the installer as suggested by the Nvidia website:
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run
and that worked.

Unfortunately, the installer ran into some path error later on.

I then tried specifying the kernel source path as follows:
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-2.6.27.7
but that gave the same error as before.

I've attached a tarball with the installer logs for the above attempts.

I then also tried setting '--kernel-output-path' but got nowhere...

Hope the log files will give you some clues

Glad you like!

Cool about the guitar pedal too :) , I had problems with it in Mandriva and earlier puppies, didn't try it with Slackware. This way though is just so easy.. Without tweaking anything, just setting basic params in Audacity, I got a smooth sound with no audible latency while recording. That may differ when I record with play-thru (over another track, playing whilst recording  ), but I'm hoping not. I know what I'll be doing over the coming weekend! I'm also hoping this little usb audio card that I have works too, it's grat for vox and live drums! Ohoh, Slaxer_Studio_Pup!

Can you post a higher res logo, if you have one, else I can fiddle with this one.

Cheers.

Thanks Joe, I installed the two pet files you made for me, closed X to the prompt then ran
# nvidia-xconfig
# xwin
and got the nvidia driver with the correct 1680x1050 resolution on my panel :P

In a teminal, I ran
# nvidia-settings
and got the Nvidia configuration menu showing the display details.

I've attached a screenshot with the Nvidia menu.

Nice work Joe 8)

install this first the kernel module
http://puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass/Sla ... -1_SBo.pet

nvidia-legacy71 for the 2.6.27.7 kernel

nvidia-legacy71 series for the 2.6.27.7 kernel
This is the proprietary binary video driver for legacy cards (Geforce 2
Backwards)

What's a legacy driver?
http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html

----------------------install packages ---------------------------
1.)install this first the kernel module
http://puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass/Sla ... -1_SBo.pet

2.)then this the binary driver
http://puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass/Sla ... -1_SBo.pet

3.)Note:back up plan just in case

---------------------set up / configuration-----------------------------------

Note: This set up is what Paul (pakt) did to get his display working
Its clear so lets use it

I installed the two pet files, closed X to the prompt then ran

Code: Select all

nvidia-xconfig
 xwin
just an example (and got the nvidia driver with the correct 1680x1050 resolution on my panel)

In a teminal, I ran

Code: Select all

nvidia-settings
and got the Nvidia configuration menu showing the display details.
