Thank you for testing and reporting what happened
and I am sorry that you had the extra trouble
of setting up your box again
the good thing is you know how to set up again quickly

when I first just read what you wrote
about your MBR not being detected
I was shocked and coulndn't
figure out how that could be possible
using a any live CD

so..after much needed sleep and finishing the 512 ISO
I imagined in my mind going through the steps you took
then I "saw" what happened

1.)everything worked correctly as a live CD
without the G force video card

2.)when you removed or installed the card after that
everything went crazy

so..what happened is when you changed the video cards
your computers CMOS went into the default mode
and your drives werent detected anymore thus your
error messages no MBR detected because it
coundnt locate a bootable drive

Did you ever watch an old TV program with a detective
named Columbo (he had a white bird) he always
scratched his head as he was walking to the door
then lifted his index finger paused then asked the big question
nobody was ready for

Am I correct?

I am shrinking a 200 GB drive
so I cant reboot this box for testing yet
but I built the new ISO on the live CD
I have 2GB of RAM to play with
so for a brutal test gparted takes 3days to shrink a 200GB
drive and during that time you can't power off
so I have been surfing the web making posts building the iso
squashing the filing system all while shrinking the drive
and leaving the computer running for three days

so I am doing some heavy testing :D
hasn't froze and boy I hope it doesn't
while shrinking this drive

I think you are conflating your TV detectives. The one with the white parrot was Baretta. Columbo was the one in the trenchcoat, who would hold his cigar to his forehead when the crucial question occurred to him.

As for the sequence of events, you have the right picture in mind.

I'll have to carefully look at the xorg log and the Slack init sequence. I won't have time to do it this week. My hunch is that the GeForce is being detected, and then there is a little squirt of i2c initialization code being sent to it, video mode perhaps. However, the Slack detection is not billeting the GeForce, which is a PCI card, in the correct place in the PCI devices list. Therefore, the initialization code is being written to the PCI device which Slack thinks is the GeForce, but it is actually the mbr of the disk with the bootloader on it. This initialization code is overwriting the grub bootloader in the mbr. Luckily, the partition table is not being overwritten.

This glitch probably won't affect any systems but those rare old ones which, like mine, carry both onboard PCI video and an add-in PCI video card.

and marked errors but that was taken care of
and were false alarms

the sfs is much smaller due to squashfs lzm compression

A general solution is to use Puppys ability to place files in a subfolder.
In grub, I start around 20 different versions of Puppy like this:

Just saw this thread (I don't read the forum as much as I would like :( ). Great initiative big_bass! This is exactly the kind of Puppy I want as my working version, ie, SMP support, Slackware 12.2 compatibility and updates while retaining as much as possible of Barry's original Puppy.

Here's my first report.

Xorg works but chooses the 'vesa' driver giving the wrong resolution (1600x1200 instead of 1680x1050 that I chose). Need the nVidia driver...

Network and sound work without problem.

Created pup_save file and rebooted (using GRUB) - Xorg, network and sound work as before.

I have more hardware and will try to send you further test results.

Will you be providing a devx sfs for compiling the odd driver, etc?

what you could do also is
compile on any slackware 12.2 smp kernel
if you need something
or download one

that allows for much more flexibility

I have tried both your version of slaxer on my P4 micron laptop, with broadcom and Prism_USB.. wireless, Now I have about 15 different flavors of puppy's running on an external HD so I believe I am a good judge, and without doubt slaxer is the fastest. All the apps just work, that is awesome.
Just about all the hardware that I tried except for the prism2_usb adapter (that did work out of all other versions of puppy). worked perfectly. I am going too try to base a pupplet on it.

2 Questions ;

1) You mention LZM compatability, does that mean we can use mo duals from slax?? AND if so how do we do it exactly?

2) Is there any way to incorporate the new packege manager from woof, that would be just "cream on the cake"

use the second iso I did some fixes you need
everyone should use the latest iso

yes, the prism2 wasnt added in :?

ok about slax modules

I added in the important under the hood tools and added in the mounting script
but you need to add one line of code to set it up

right click on any *.lzm
its says Set Run action

add this

Code: Select all

filemnt "$1"
now you can click mount it
then click again to unmount it

poke around inside and if it all looks good
you could just rename it from whatever.lzm to whatever.sfs
the the same as puppy handles a sfs at boot manager


dont try anything that needs KDE ok :D
or you hack away and make it a pet also 8)

as far as the woof package manager
there are a few workarounds to get the simular result


anyway I have a few surprises in the plans

This is starting to get VERY interesting! my mind begins to boggle with the possibilities, I have the ability to test stuff across multiple;e platforms and configs, Over the next bit of time I will try to boot it on a number of customer computers so that you have a larger test basis..

Ok just tried it on a Compaq EVO P4 laptop, worked fine found everything.

HMMM just found something, when I started using slaxer I could not get it to work other then off the CD. any install gave me a .sfs error of could not find pupfile, even though it was there.
Using the "pupdirirectory" line fixed that for my frugal install on my hardrive, Life was good!
I just tried to setup a frugal install on a flash drive using the same config line, BUT for some reason No joy, says can not find pupfile, wierd........ Slaxer is actually SO good that If I must run it from a HD only, O_well but I would like to run from a USB flash drive like other pups, any ideas?

I am working on the USB problem since I like to boot using USB also
I checked it out a bit last night and discovered that the USB is detected during boot so thats good news

I need to check the install script and see why the USB wasnt listed there
I'll keep you posted

but the way I built the sfs it will allow any boot lilo or grub as long as you point to it correctly

the kernel is loading the USB correctly which is a plus

I haven't checked,but it sounds like maybe the kernel modules built in to initrd.gz may be missing???

I have been following this thread a bit and am curious enough to download your work for a try... will report back in another post with my results, if successful.

Two issues present themselves while just looking at this, though. The first is that I must be able to use this off of a USB memory stick (which you are already working on). The second issue is that I don't see 1024x600 screen resolution listed as even being an available option in pakt's #ddcprobe listed above. I know that Puppy 4.x.x was the first official release that would properly display on my 1024x600 netbook with Xvesa (or, using the Generic driver in Xorg).

Will report back later this week....

First impressions of Slaxer-pup 4.12. Nice!

I run an Asus A7S8X.... SiS chipset, (AMD 2100+ Athlon, 512DDR ram, shared with graphics, onboard Sata.... which in the verbose bootup was detected, though I've no Sata drives... Beem would like it!

Sound and network worked OOTB, both onboard, no probs with xorg, onboard 64M graphics.

Was a little slower to boot than a stock Puppy, extra things in the list to detect I expect, but none the less it looks and feels very crisp. :wink:

I like it! Now to try on a slower box... (don't think the 486 is quite up to it live though :wink: )

Well I'm back on my oldish IBM Aptiva... SiS chipset AMD k6 400MHz, 256sdram, 8M shared graphics, onboard sound and USB... all the onboard stuff was detected at bootup plus my 2 realtek ethernet cards. All worked too. :wink:

Had some trouble with wireless, that's the only way this box connects. Using my netgearWG111V2 (realtek.. rtl8187) was a failure, but I blame the card. I can only get it to run sweetly on a fast box in any puppy, and then it needs tweaking, depends how far from the router I am... :roll: . It was detected at bootup but I couldn't raise it, even with "if config wlan0 up" command. So I plugged in my el cheapo TP-link wireless B-G adapter and it was not detected at bootup. I racked my brain and remembered it is a Ralink using rt37usb module. I loaded that and here I am in about 60seconds. :P

So for me slaxer-pup is great.. now to try the lappy :twisted:

One thing I forgot to mention... for some reason this OS seems to play an mp3 file better than 4.2 and marginally better than spup using BK's woof kernel. This box is too slow to test flash. I need this kernel for my spup!!!!

I am using it on an AMD Athlon X2 dual processor - with the newer ISO you have posted.
I don't seem to have two processors running - what is the command line scriipt - that show this? (I ran top view from the menu)

Seems OK so far . . . :)
I tried the 'flush memory' script you included but that did not seem to close the audio player used to test audio (worked)

I am trying hard to understand what you have done and why? 8)
It seems quite technical - the good news for those wondering it looks and feels like Puppy 4.12 8)
The real question I have is how is this different to woof built spup?
Is it in the kernel and compression used?

Back again.

Lappy is an IBM Thinkpad R31, Celery 1066(P3 architcture), 512sdram, 8M Intel graphics, again, everything on board works OOTB! Even the Trackpoint stick thingy. Nice.

Ok, wireless. I have a Netgear WG511V2 pcmcia card on this one... crappy Marvell chipset unsupported by Linux... however it works a treat in all Puppies with ndiswrapper. This is where I hit a snag. :cry: . All seemed to be going ok when I got a fatal error.... no ndiswrapper module! Please load another module! Ah well, two outa three aint bad! And if I tried another adapter I know it would work :wink: But I couldn't be bothered ATM (Sorry!)

Hope some of this helps... and if not, at least puts a smile on your dial knowing that three vastly different sets of HW work just fine OOTB with Slaxer_Pup :mrgreen:

Does BK know what your up to? I'm sure he'd be interested.

I think that what big_bass has done is used the slackware 12.2 kernel only, obviously with patches to get it to run live. I think all the packages are stock 4.1.2.

Spup from woof uses either a stock 4.1.2 kernel or Barry's woof kernel... sorry forget the number ATM and I'm not near a running spup box. Then many of the packages come from the Slackware 12.2 repo or the Slacky.eu repo and are stripped by woof's scripts.

So essentially, Slaxer_Pup is Slackware 12.2 in Puppy clothing and spup is woof in Slackware clothing. Sheep don't come into it. Does this make any sense at all??? :lol: :lol: :lol:
