I got SlaxerPup to boot from USB :P

I've added a 'sleep 3' in init and it now works. I tried different delays and 3 seconds was the the minimum delay that would work on my slowest PC, the eBox-2300 with its 200MHz Pentium-class CPU.

I've attached the modified initrd.gz. Just replace the initrd.gz on the USB stick with this one and it should boot now 8)

Great news!

I was away on a mini vacation to Puerto Vallarta Mexico
just got back great to hear you got the USB worked out to boot up

A big thanks Paul
I always need a clear head and a lot of free time to poke around in the initrd so thats welcomed news

maybe a USB puppy option would speed things up since you tell it were to look already

something like this I will work on it too
#puppy pfix=usb

so you only look there thus speed up the boot

Yes, I agree. I haven't done any debugging of init for years

Good idea. Although a USB option wouldn't speed up detection of USB devices, it could bypass searches on other drives afterwards and save time that way. I think it's worth putting in - may not be too hard 8)

Hej micko. Sorry, I missed your post.

I also thought that would be obvious - 'hugesmp.s' for smp support, but I seem to recall reading about problems running that kernel on old, single-core machines. They would hang with that kernel and only the 'huge.s' would work.

The funny thing is that SlaxerPup with its smp support runs on all the old hardware I have including the eBox-2300 thin client with its 200Mhz, pentium-class CPU

Hi Paul,

I have Slackware 12.2 installed on my Athlon 2100+ and it goes fine with "hugesmp.s".

Same box with Slaxer_Pup.

Slaxer_Pup also works just fine on my K6 400MHz, and my lappy... celeron 1GHz.

I have 2 others to check out but they are newer, neither multicore though :( .

I am due for a HW upgrade soon, might try an Athlon 64... or whatever they call them these days.

Cheers

original post so you don't need to look for it
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 8&start=74

get this pet package first its the package management tool for *.tgz
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=18215
--------------------------------------------------------------------
example how to install a package using slackware package tools
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 8&start=81

install the latest network wizard
http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass ... 6-slxr.tgz

I'll look into the GLX
I am not using a nvidia card myself

compiling nvidia was done from source code and build scripts
also having the kernel headers and kernel source
so thats a lot more work to set up correctly
I compiled all the nvidia packages on slaxer_pup with the devx 412
----------------------------------------------------
for other apps I need to compile
*src2pkg is a very powerful tool I use for keeping apps up to date
and thats what I use it for the main advantage is you compile on
your system thus having the best compatibility you can maintain
slaxer_pup up to date

instead of the mix and match that takes place when you take packages
and libs from different distros and versions and different configurations

thanks again.

hi Joe
thank you for your hard works, the new firmware tarball had been installed on Slaxer_pup_412, but i could not make my wifi card work.
thanks again.

my wifi card works fine on these distros:
ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27.7;
puppy 4.2, kernel 2.6.25.16 with the newest firmware;
slitaz cooking 20090228 recompiled kernel with iwl4965 module and the newest firmware;
upup 476, kernel 2.6.29.4 with the newest firmware;

and i googleed slackware 12.2 and iwl4965 in linuxquestion, there was only one case about some problem. i was confused.

Paul (pakt)

A big thank you for your hacked initrd.gz file. I am now testing my sons lenovo thinkpad 2gig celery w/2gig ram. Everything is instant! Booting took about 20 seconds (once I figured out the bios  ) I made the usb install on an old PIII I first fired up today with no harddrive. First i tried it on the wifes doze box and it failed. Then I remembered you got it to go. Read your post, got the initrd and here I am. I've no idea how to edit an initrd file, I cant even open it! All I could see was a bunch of 0's and other numbers with a few recognisable words and numbers.

Any way, it's working great, thanks again.

Cheers

Well guys
I am making some packages for slaxer_pup
some will be in *tgz format and some as pets
really the only reason for pets is for new users
and die hard puppy users :D
but the slackware package tool is "lite speed"
for installing and removing packages and a quick view
of what was installed so worth learning

I modified the slackware package tools to handle
jwm and ice window managers
I will upload that package too

so you can get more comfortable with
those old world standard tools

I have made numerous modifications to slaxer pup
and I am building packages so you can test them
I am branding the packages with a "-i486-slxr"

so you know I tested them and built them for slaxer pup

I made a new folder everything will be in here to keep it easy
http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass ... _packages/

as for updated iso's
good things are in the making

here's some custom built and patched stuff
I patched these for slaxer pup but they should work fine on a standard 412 too

gimp photo shop very rare
http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass ... 6-slxr.pet

xnview with custom made mime types added in (image viewer/converter many formats )
http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass ... 6-slxr.pet

geany -0.17
http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass ... 6-slxr.pet

sakura 2.3.2 terminal plus required libs use all three
after using sakura you'll never go back to rxvt
http://puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass/sla ... 6-slxr.pet
http://puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass/sla ... 6-slxr.pet
http://puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass/sla ... 6-slxr.pet

I got in the mood for some art work :D

I have installed slaxer_pup quick and dirty just to get the accelerated nvidia drivers and I'm pleased with how easy that was. The trouble now, is that firefox is unstable and my widgets and scroll bars have disappeared.

I didn't want to lose any bookmarks or small tweaks, but now I'm gonna need to fix a few things. Where is a good place to start after such a savagely shoehorned install?

well great to hear

a little history why
the 412 sfs is completely different and then compressed with lzm

I had to keep the name 412 name the same because it was such a pain to modify every single call to that name and number
I should know I tried it got almost all but pet get got borked
and it wasnt worth the easy fix

1.)just rename your old 412 to something else
oldsfs.sfs if you need an example

2.) boot

Code: Select all

puppy pfix=ram
then install slaxer_pup

now when slaxer pup is running you could mount your oldsfs.sfs

and take out your bookmarks or files you need

if you need firefox I can walk you trough a stable install
with a current version I posted in this thread somewhere before
or make you a pet ---> here's a pet
http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/big_bass ... 6-slxr.pet

to get your old bookmarks they are here

Code: Select all

rox -s /root/.mozilla/default/*.slt/bookmarks.html
don't use your old pupsave the configuration very is different
you could also rename that and take out what ever you need

great to hear the nvidia works for you now :D

I updated pkgtools you need this instead if you downloaded my previous package this helps ease the transition to puppy
by registering the packages in JWM and icewm in the menu

I know there are quite a few people that don't understand what I am doing with slackware package tools and src2pk

I have been working on this since puppy version 3.01
to extend the package managment of puppy... umm slaxer pup too

what will happen is I will make puppy 4.12 compatible packages
also so any puppy based on 4.12 can use my work also
but all the tools I am adding makes that work much "easier"

pkgtools updated 6/10/09 to add JWM and iceWM fixmenus
slackware pkgtools as a pet to install official slackware packages

Thanks for your efforts in this derivitive. I like the concept.
I have tried Slaxer_Pup on many machines to date and all has worked well.
On the newer motherboards that I have it is not necessary to turn off the ACPI to get them to boot which is a big plus.
I am trying to get Virtual Box running and have downloaded the kernel-source-2.6.27.7-smp-1.lzm and rename it to kernel-source-2.6.27.7-smp-1_412.sfs.
Got Virtual Box installed OK but the driver won't compile.
I have installed Virtual Box on many versions of puppy so I am familiar with the method but the right kernel-source module is critical.

the error log reads

Makefile:156: *** Error: /usr/src/linux (version 2.6.27.7-smp) does not match the current kernel (version 2.6.27.7). Stop.

So it does not like the smp version. I cannot find a non smp version.

Thanks

Thanks for the assistance Joe. I'm truly impressed with your puppy so far as I reinstalled from it scratch. I've got the nvidia driver back in and installed the Firefox you posted above. However, there is a boatload of missing library *.so's that the package manager hasn't got a clue about.

In my previous life I would've gone to rpmfind.net and determined which libraries contained the missing so's, but now I'm completely lost.
