Actually, the shutdown dialogue has a huge advantage for touchpad users. Shutting down from the main menu, often focus skates about a little, making it irritating to select just what is wanted. The shutdown dialogue completely eliminates this irritation. Thanks guys...........

Not the right place but I can't find the discussion you refer to. I like JWM because it actually works. Do the others?

When I say works, I mean can use the Accessx sticky keys functions and create any keyboard shortcuts I desire. I can use the Windows keys to do what they are supposed to. Icewm did not do that for me.

As for the others, I like a start button, taskbar and system tray. Why would I want to move away from perfection just because some people have some stupid issue with Microsoft?

lapis not to worry, I can pretty much guarantee There will be a start button, system tray, thats where fbpanel or lxpanel comes in, they provide those functions, and also IceWm you can configure keyboard shortcuts just like JWM. I really dislike any window manager without a taskbar/tray/button etc.
Icewm eg just use your keyboard with some predefined keys. Look in ~/.icewm/keys and you will see that there are some keys already defined but in 4.2 I think thats located in /usr/share/icewm or /usr/local/icewm I don't have it installed right, just off the top of my head.

Ok, thanks for providing comfort. Not being right brained, I don't like change unless it comes with justifiable improvement.

Unnecessary themes and skins annoy me too. I am more concerned with it working properly than how it looks yet so many developers leave bugs in functionality yet fuss about screenshots.

Yes I'm more for one nice theme Crystal or gnome style, I hate flat themes, They only save like 20-30kb over a nice looking theme, I'm 100% against Pwidgets,Ptray,Pmusic and somewhat against Pburn due to the over use of gtkdialog and using older burning backends. Then end result is a slower system, slower booting, slower refreshing, more system links and higher failed burn rates. Plus most of those don't shutdown properly. Like this knock off version of my gui, thats only good for JWM, who in their right mind would build such a thing :), well its kind of like when you buy a knock off rollex, its never as good as the orginal. lol

Why don't we keep the usual shutdown menu in JWM?
There is a thread somewhere where we discussed how dangerous the usual JWM shutdown menu is - people sometimes shutdown accidentally, especially if they use a laptop touchpad that decides you have clicked when you didn't mean to.
ttuuxxx wrote:it was my Idea I brought to 4.2, something I was working on for about 6+months more off than on
I don't really want to restart the mud-slinging (I only just noticed it), but since Zigbert is the second person Ttuuxxx has attacked for "stealing" this code, and to bring a little perspective:
There were at least three people that wrote shutdown gtkdialogs long before ttuuxxx did (one of which was in a puplet), and I unsuccessfully requested Barry include a version, but it is such an obvious idea that we wouldn't accuse ttuuxxx of "stealing" it.
If you don't like Zigbert's version, that is OK, but there is no reason he shouldn't make it. It's called choice, which is what Linux is all about. Personally I prefer my version :) I can't fathom why you would put tabs in a gui unless you need to, as all it does is add mouse-clicks.
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

This one isn't really stealing/reusing my code much because its JWM specific, But the one during 4.2 beta was, other than using other icons and tossing the banner. It caused a stink then, and then a month later he builds this version and sticks a 'P' on the name and thinks because his did that, it will supersede my version once again, its like a competition. He can call it what ever he wants. But it was a lowdown stunt the first time he tried it during the build of 4.2 and was a complete stupid, idiotic, immature, down right nasty thing to do again 1month later. Like I said puppy has tons of GUI that don't follow any style, theme etc that could use work way more than this one is probably the most unneeded attention GUI that gets the most attention.

As for the tabs. well I didn't want them either but we had a couple of complaints that they just wanted a basic GUI with options on a second menu.

But it was a lowdown stunt
Why you always think people have malicious intentions? It wasn't a low-down stunt. You've been saying lately that you don't like bloat - Zigbert is a more extreme minimalist who genuinely likes things to be no bigger than they need to be. I don't for a moment believe he did it to compete with you.

If that was the truth he would drop his Pburn burning backend and upgrade it to libisofs, libburn, libisoburn, cdrskin, xorriso and save over 500kb compressed and have a more stable backend,
Not saving Anything really when the shudown pet package is 20kb compressed including the refresh script and icons&banner that WhoDo wanted to match the flat orange theme, which he didn't bother to listen to and included some undersized reused icons and thats why his was a flop in 4.2. If you would of added the 3scripts, 11 icons/ 1 banner as requested by WhoDo it would of been the same size if not a bit larger because I compressed the icons with gimp. It wasn't a saving of size it was pure jealousy at its finest  That drove him to compete.

Also during the 4.2 build I saved over 5000kb compressed by spending weeks on Seamonkey and then saved over 1000KB compressed on IceWm by spending weeks on that also, and then I saved well over 2000kb on the rest of the programs I compiled for 4.2, a total of 8MB or 8000kb compressed and do you really think that a saving of 15kb compressed and calling my shutdown menu 'Bloat' like he did during 4.2 was justified ???

Hi dave there is in my package, but its hidden :)
basically when you select refresh menus, it first runs 'fixmenus' script and then it runs 'restart JWM' or 'restart Icewm' script. Thats why it wasn't in the menu, I did have it in the menu but people complain saying well its part of fixmenu's script so no need to have it twice.

Just make a shortcut icon on the desktop and edit it to execute this command

Code: Select all

jwm -restart

I could be wrong, but I don't think he could "upgrade" pburn to use those libs. I think he would have to learn C and gtk programming, and write a completely new, proper compiled program. He is really a Bash+gtkdialog expert, so it is an enormous task you are suggesting.

You can also run those via the console, C would be ideal, but Pburn could be adapted to use them, I know this because when I compiled bashburn it used the newer libs.
Also there are loads of documents on it, http://libburnia-project.org/

Oh, OK, you just want to use the command-line front-ends from libburnia. The website says cdrskin is cdrecord compatible, so it shouldn't require an upgrade from Zigbert - whoever releases Puppy would just have to decide to make the switch - now, I wonder about xorriso... You could always try using it instead.

I'm curious about this claim of greater stability - do you have personal experience?

Well when I made the 512kb xfburn package http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 35&t=38757 , I was getting emails from people like telling me of how many issues they had with pburn and that they were extremely happy with xfburn, I've been using it ever since I made up the package and its worked perfect every time, really I wish we had some C programmers to add some extra functions to xfburn, The size is excellent for your getting in the package, Really I would like to see puppy move over to xfce and rox, They do have a few nice applications, even a leafpad version called mousepad.lol strange
