Erm....how would I put the "bling" back in?

Pwidgets etc

Sorry...I want the best of both worlds...my "linux newbs" like it, I wont force it on anyone else ;-)

P.S. This would make a great base for a puppy 4.2.1 if this were to happen, thank you for fixing the bugs
Hi you would be better to ask Zigbert, I'm not supporting Pwidgets :) or any bling other than WM,icons, backgrounds :)

Firefox wrote:Hi Thuuxxx

I`m running your v2 version on a full hard drive install and think it`s really great, I like the rc3 icons.
I have found however just like many other recent pups that when I configure Alsa sound it finds my via82.xxx chips and loads up. However as it displays what it is doing, a list of missing sound modules comes up as it swiches to the next input screen. Gxine still works but it does NOT remember the setting and I have to configure it again every time I switch on.
Also I have noticed that when I play some mp3s from on line I have to wait for buffer refills 4 seconds soundplay and 4 seconds off - it really is a pain. I am on dialup but I`m sure I could hear continuos sounds before using some other player in the far past -maybe at a lesser quality. I like to listen to net radio broadcasts or their saved talk shows for later playback. One of them is www.kevinsmithshow.com a talkshow on paranormal ufo`s etc. I get the buffer problem when clicking on Latest show, top of left menu.
Is ther another player that can handle this? I noticed something about Javascript.

Thanks for all your time and effort.

I'm just wondering if this is a direct link to your show?

http://kevinsmithshow.com/program/today.swf
try opening that with gxine
or you can actually download it using puppy multithread downloader

By the way, can you tell me how to remove the Ptray out from the original puppy? I used petbegone to remove it but it comes back on a remastered CD.
How I removed Ptray is that I downloaded from the software section and renamed it to tar.gz then extracted it and deleted the files, then I read the install method posted on the thread and deleted that :)

Its ok Ttuxxxx, dont blindfold yourself on our account, someone has already produced a bugfixed 4.2 with the usability features people need (bling?). It has SMP (dual core processor) support also.

All thats needed is to regress the still buggy abiword back to how it was before you upgraded it (I can hear the cursing around the world) and it will make a top base for the next CE or even official version.

yes I know of it, its using some of my fixes which is cool, But don't forget this version is built for no bling, 72% of almost 100 voted against bling. Which that version does not cater for.

I don't think you can seriously recommend that smp version since it has no kernel source available. You can't compile nvidia drivers, vmware, or anything else kernel related.

I this version is pretty nice. no bling, and the choice to bring it back. also with the patches. Only a big shame you removed the JQ8flat-lite icons. ;)

those are my favourites.

But a big thanks for your work ttuxxx. Because I prefer this nobling version, and i'm using it.

I'm trying to get the JQ8flat-lite icons back. And i tried with a pet, but it wasn't applied 100% in the menu for example. Half of it was the JQ8flat-lite icons, and the rest the default icons. But perhaps i did something wrong or used the wrong JQ8flat-lite pet.

Hi ttuuxx,
Have you tried your vlc-0.8.6h-engv5.pet in Puppies 4.2-v2?
I reported my problem in the vlc post
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=165

I would be very greatfull if you could sort out the problem as I really prefer vlc for my installs and have now got your Puppies 4.2-v2 installed and working well.

thanks

Hi DC

The next time I have 4.2 running I'll look at VLC :) I also feel its a must have application, Its always been a bit touch and go with the skins2, The default theme is the one that works best I find because drag and drop works :)

Funny you like those icons, I'm having a bit of trouble removing those icons from Dpup, Barry even included the mime's in a newer/default original location grrrr, I just can get around to getting used to them.
Just make sure that the icons have the same name as the other theme. located in /usr/local/lib/X11/themes

As I mentioned on the bling poll, it was a poll of current puppy users, not new puppy/linux users.....puppies aim. What it did prove is that there was a sizeable proportion of existing (not future) forum users that thought adding the extra useability features offered was worth the extra bloat.

I recognise there is a need for a bugfixed "no-bling" version 4.2, but there is also a need for a bugfixed "with-bling" version too.

Would you spare 5 minutes of your time to document what you did to take the "bling" out, so those that want/need it can have a bugfixed version too? No one is expecting you to "support" it, just to recognise that some people have different needs to yourself.

I really want to know what people think after including the blink in puppy 4.2. Do they still like it?

Personally, I don't like it. I think the strengths of Puppy over other distros are its size, speed, and various hardware support. ttuuxxx's Puppy is what I think it is the Puppy should be.

Ecomoney,

I agree with you that we need a bug fixed bling version. However, you cannot expect Tuxxx to do it and should not be hijacking this thread to request it. Tuxxx has made his views on the matter very clear and we should respect that.

I think there is a place for the no bling version and I congratulate Tuxxx in getting it done and, more importantly, swiftly adding the patches.

I am disappointed that Whodo has not released 4.2.1, i.e 4.2 plus patches, now that the situation has stabilised. I was expecting it as an Easter present! To expect newbies to download the standard Puppy, which by the freememapplet alone is obviously broken, and then go find patches on a forum they may not know about I find ridiculous. I just cannot point to the standard 4.2 in the Lin'N'Win instructions because of this. I would look a fool pointing to a bugged Puppy and it does Puppy no favours. I will, of course, be pointing to the no bling version in due course.

Perhaps you, Ecomoney, can start with the bling version, add the patches and remaster and then offer up to Eric for hosting. If not then start a thread to ask for someone to do it.

Now let this thread get back to discussing no bling.

What a great version of Puppy. Already running well on a couple of older machines. I've checked out all the other options I can find (there are a lot!) and Puppy is the most usable, stable and good looking distro available with this revision2 by ttuuxxx being my 1st choice.

Pwget is broken though and I have checked the mdsum. It's ok.

Thanks again for the huge amount of work you've done for Puppy!

Well guys by far this release hasn't had many problems reported which is good :) Lately I've been really disappointed with Zigberts tactics over my shutdown script that has been the first official one ever used in puppy, he tried to take it away after it was already elected to be default in 4.2, by submitting a stripped down version of the one I made, and then a month later he released another version in the software forum and claimed it as the one which was going to be used in the next puppy release, Once again getting under my skin, and then today he updated again. Funny first we have to deal with ecomoney and his crazy stuff and when the fire settles Zigbert starts up again.
So due to Zigbert extremely pushy and completely overbearing attitude, I'm no longer going to include his main programs in any of my releases, Also I'll only add them back into releases once he has his shutdown script removed from the forum. When Someone spends time developing something and making it work, it feels really nice, and when it gets placed into the default release it feels even better, the wife is proud and the kids also to see it, but when you get a resentful Bastard like Zigbert trying to take it out from under me twice in 2 months and he fully knows how I feel about it and he won't leave it alone. Fine I say, Theres only one thing to do, Drop my support for zigberts applications and graphics!.

My next releases of puppies will be non-zigbert releases.
gone already is pwidgets,ptray
next on the zigbert chopping list will be pmusic, pburn, pfind, pprocess.Deep Thought Themes. I already have xfburn installed which equals pburn minus a few small things, But I have some others that will fill the void.

What does this mean to the average puppy user, All the zigbert replacement programs will shutdown when clicked on, they will not remain running in the background, your system will be faster and more stable, It will also add maybe 1-3MB to the size of the release. I'm tired of running puppy and a have my pc on for a few days and look over at the resources and notice that I still have pburn, pfind running in the background from 2 days ago.

Puppy is about choices, Zigbert has chosen to go against me and I have chosen to drop my total support for his work. These are exciting times, oh yes You'll also have the most update/stable version of puppy, If you have any ideas of small programs to replace zigbert versions please let me know, or if you know of any bugs, please submit them soon, I'm starting my next release tonight :)
This will be a rapid revolving release first on my list is a more stable version of CUPS.
