Gtkpod ipod manager,

#1 Post by ttuuxxx »

@@@@ Updated X2 @@@@

Well I came across this and figured why not compile it for people, Since I don't own a iPod, so I have no way of testing it. So some feedback on how it runs would be appreciated.:)
Thanks
ttuuxxx

gtkpod (http://www.gtkpod.org) is a platform independent GUI for Apple's iPod using GTK2. It allows you to import your existing iTunes database, to add songs, podcasts, video and cover art and to edit ID3 tags. gtkpod also features international charset support for ID3 tags, detects when adding already existing songs, and more.

What distinguishes this from Plinej's package?
It is all in one .pet?
Maybe it doesn't have libmp4v2 support/dependency?
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Well I compiled it on 4.1 and its a all in one pet package. I have no clue what Plinej did in the past, I didn't do a search, it just works :)

This is one of the great problems of application contributions on the Puppy forum; the lack of cohesion and information management. plinej's gtkpod was contributed last January

This is another problem; that the technical options and underpinnings of applications are not revealed.
If this version was compiled without mp4v2 support then it will probably not play Apple's preferred audio codec, AAC. Most of the people I know with iPods have 90% of their music library in the AAC format.

There seems a contradiction.

All these developments are done with enthusiasm.

But indeed newbees might easily confused about those "parallel" offerings of applications.

Maybe this can be taken care of in the new way of developing the puppy platform for the future.

I typed that because I ran it via the command line and it displayed no errors, then I ran it from the menu/multimedia/GTKPod and it opened up just fine, so since I had No errors, it was very understandable to type that. But the knowledge that I was lacking was that iPods use libmp4v2. Now that I know that its now included.

Strictly speaking, they don't. The iPod uses the official Apple AAC codec.
mp4v2 is an opensource alternative to encode/decode AAC.
FAAD/FAAC are also opensource alternatives.

The question remains; what differences (if any) are there between this package and the earlier gtkpod package from plinej?

The difference is
- All in one package
- I had no clue there was a previous release, And this one is easier to install.
Anyways enjoy

Hi ttuxxx

I've got access to a dusty iPod somewhere so thought I'd try to test this.

I ran the .pet and got the following error:

"File /usr/local/bin/gtkpod has these missing library files:
libgpod.so.3"

(Tested on Puppy 4.1)

Thanks

Could this program be used to support Creative's Zen Micro as well?

It supports Audio Format MP3 • WAV • WMA
But the first thing to know if the program sees the device on the usb port.
I'll give it a try and report back.

Strictly speaking, Gnomad2 + libmtp is for MTP protocol players as opposed to mass storage drag and drop types. Is Gnomad2 available for Puppy Linux?

Sure. Followed the instructions there and installed, but 'No Jukeboxes found on USB'. Bummer as Gnomad2 is the only transfer porg I have come across that can build playlists properly on MTP devices. Wonder what I am doing wrong............................

gnomad2 seems a little fussy with it's libraries.
Try this one here:

My fault. The one from the link works fine, the one from this thread http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=33164 did not. Thanks so much for this. Gnomad2 was my last remaining reason to load Ubuntu. I even got Puppy Podcast Grabber working properly when downloading single podcasts split in to several sections.
I love this distro ...........

BTW, Gnomad2 is strictly MTP only. It cant see mass storage type devices, so if your player is not MTP enabled, just use Rox.
