I tried installing puppeee for my eee pc 701 but after the install is done and i reboot, all i get is a grub prompt. I used the full install method and there were no error messages and the install went fine. What should i do?
You could try this method: http://www.puppylinux.org/manuals/puppy ... stallation

Installed & running on the 901

#62 Post by AppalachiaLuvsEEE »

I installed Pupeee (should it be Puppeee?) 4.2 on the Asus eee 901 and everything is running pretty smoothly. Thanks Luther!

Question: what's the easiest or best way to turn the WiFi radio off and on? It seems to come on at boot and I don't see any control to turn it off. The hotkey doesn't work.

You need acpid-Eee-rt2860sta.pet
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 744#237744
You also need eee-asus_acpi-pciehp-k2.6.25.16.pet from the same post, though it may be included already?

It's likely that luther349 probably included acpid-Eee-ath_pci.pet, since this is the most common wifi device in Eee's.
That's the problem with remasters in general: "one size" never fits all.

Great! Thanks for the help. It's all a bit intimidating for linux beginners like myself. But so far Puppy looks worth the effort!

i whant to do one with dri working but for the intel gma card you need a kernel patch. most modern distros have them but not puppy being its not compiled for 3d to save space. i have always failed at recompiling a kernel.

How to make an eee pup?

#68 Post by Dromeno »

Which pets need to be installed in a given puplet in order to make it into a pupeee puplet?

I love the acer-puppy-410-27 and pupeee42 but I would like to use other puplets on my AsusEEE too, and i do not know how to make other puplets fully compatible (audio, camera, wireless).

2.14.1X can, Its probably a real good one to choose from, since I made some of the default aps smaller, like the package manager etc, also it comes with a eeepc camera driver and also some drivers, but if you look at the 30+pages in the 2.14.1.X thread you'll find 3 pages of drivers, not for just eeepc but about 1 page worth including a fan driver which I recommend users with eeepc install, asap.

ps 2.14.1X4 is the latest version

Not all Eee models have the same hardware. The wifi and ethernet hardware, in particular, vary from model to model. But in general the extra drivers you need are:

- Wifi
- Ethernet
- Webcam
- Hotkeys
- Fan control
- Internal microphone support

The relevant pages in that thread (I just checked now) all link to the Puppy 2.12-2.16 drivers here
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=43653

And for Puppy 4.1/4.2 (plus Puplets based on the same 2.6.25.16 kernel) compatible drivers are here

puplet2eee.sfs

#71 Post by Dromeno »

That is quite a list... the easiest option would probably be to have an SFS for, say AsusEEE model xxx, which you can install to make a given puplet Asusxxx compatible.

Since the pupeee42.iso is so good (works on Acer One too as well as every laptop I have tried so far) I have asked the author of the asuseee42 to give the urls to the exact drivers (s)he used and then I will see if I can combine those into one puplet2eee.sfs

6 dotpets?
Seems relatively easy to me.
Dromeno wrote:the easiest option would probably be to have an SFS for, say AsusEEE model xxx
Well, sure, go ahead if you wish.
But those 6 dotpets in total are no larger than 500KB. It seems overkill to make an SFS of such a small package.

If consolidation is your intention, I would consider it more straightforward if you would combine your various combinations of Eee dotpets into a single dotpet for each model.

Since I'm the one who compiled the Eee driver dotpets, I can assure you the "exact" drivers are the ones that I listed above -

Tempestuous,

Will your fine drivers still work in Barry's 4.1.5 (and beyond)?

Best,

So long as 4.1.5 is based on the 4.1.x base (and not wolf) then yes it will work because 4.1.x and 4.2.x use the same kernel.

Yes, Barry mentioned that he's sticking with the 2.6.25.16 kernel for Puppy 415.

When Puppy 5 (uPup) is released, this will be with a very new kernel, probably 2.6.31.
Some Eee wifi devices will then be supported out of the box - the troublesome Atheros AR5007EG wifi chipset will be supported by the new ath5k driver, and the new N-mode Atheros wifi devices will be supported by the ath9k driver.

Third party drivers will still be required for the Ralink RT2860 and Realtek RTL8187SE wifi devices.

If I lobby Barry to include the pciehp module in the kernel, hotkeys will just need the addition of the acpid utility, which is not kernel-dependent.

The only other non-standard driver required will be the fan/CPU module.

yes i was going to do one with more support but i also wanted to get the gma945 into dri mode so the eee has full video and light gaming ability on puppy. but i have ran into a wall with dri. even with the drm installed all i get is a black screen.

as for the guy asking on how to make a puplett its not that hard puppy has all the tools you need to make one. make your changes be it extra pets or patches or other changes and use the re-master tool to make a new iso. and post it hear in this fourm.

i never thought pupeee 4.2 would get such a large user base :) form the few changes i did. but by time puppy 5x comes out i may not need to make another. support may be truly out of the box.

eeepc 701
1) pupeee4.2 does not remember brightness level after reboot and brightness changing sometimes to max level during video playback
2) package manager in 4.2 does not fit to screen so it is very hard to delete packages.
3)touchpad has problems with sensitivity (vs ubuntu or win)
4)sometimes hangs up while saving session before power off.

there are no problems 1,2,4 in pupeee3

Search for xbacklight-1.1 and its thread. That'll take care of your backlight issue.

Search for pet uninstaller for eee (maybe called "petget package manager"). That'll show all your installed apps.

Haven't noticed touchpad problems with my eee 900. As for shutdown problems, make sure networks/wifi shut down BEFORE you turn off. That'll help. Shutdown still not perfect.

Shutdown fix -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 714#238714

xbacklight is here -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 629#250629
but read further down the thread; the asus_acpi control method might be better.

Touchpad - somewhere on the forum someone mentioned an xorg.conf adjustment which will fix touchpad sensitivity.
