Patches don't work

#16 Post by straypup »

Tried to install two of the above patches, the one for SCIM and the REMAX patch. Both gave the pink failure screen about not opening in proper folder or being corrupt. Othersc installed without a hitch.
AMD Duron 800 on old compaq 5000 series desktop, 1g swap 784 RAM
40g hd running Live CD 0f 4.2 unmodified. Used directions in 41 languages to get it working, but would like to have patch available next time.
Thanks stray

Interesting. I installed both on my test bed when they were supplied and they installed fine.

Here is a workaround until I figure out why that is happening:

1. Use pet2tgz from a console to convert the downloaded pet file to a tgz compressed archive

2. Use Xarchiver to extract the archive to its appropriate folders

3. Copy the resulting folders into your Puppy 4.2 directory structure where they should go.

I think the pink message is given when the file name is not identical to the folder name from which the pet was created. So, for example, if you renamed remax-4.2.1 to remax-4.2.1RC and then tried to install it would throw up that error.

Hope that helps

I just tried downloading the gtk one, and something renamed the + in the name to '%2B'.

You can either rename it by hand, or use this direct link to the copy on my server.
gtk+-2.12.1-xinput.pet

Could be just my system. All I did was download and open with default. Did not save file. Maybe doesn,t like live CD. Not a show stopper as there are work-a rounds  . Thanks for the reply......

I just checked and it did that to me too, in Seamonkey. Do you use Seamonkey, PG? If not, maybe it's a forum storage issue? :?

I should have realised from my old days with DOS and 11.3 naming conventions! I thought Linux handled that better, and it does, but apparently wikis and forums are not Linux? Thanks, `f00!

Firefox here. I agree, probably a forum issue.

Hey WhoDo You know how I made up the 5 search engines for Seamonkey right, well I made a new one for Barry's Blog that works excellent, If you do a search on Barry's Blog say for 'Gparted' you get 2 results, if you do one with the search engine, you get 44 results. So anyways here's the tiny pet. Ps its also a quick way to his forum.

I updated JWM to the latest snapshot on page 1 of this thread, The numbers don't, he just keeps uploading newer releases with the same number??? So I added a '-1' so you know its update #1, anyways It has better features I guess like hovering over the windows tabs will give you info, and other things. enjoy

There is a patch (fixed JWM + Flash10) which fixes a LOT of problems with full-screen video playback in sites like youtube. Look at TurboPup for instance. Why aren't these in the list? And what about the gxine patch to allow it to go full-screen without bugs (or is that included in the JWM patch which is also not included)?

Flash10 will never be in the "official" patches because it is just too big for inclusion in standard Puppy. Instead it was made available in the PETget repository. The Gxine full screen in JWM issue has been resolved and is included in the main release. JWM has been retained at an earlier version because the newer version is not yet considered mature enough to include.

What you are asking about here are actually not "official" fixes or patches which is why none of them is posted here. Turbopup is a puplet and not a standard Puppy release either.

I hope that explains things for you.

Yep I have to agree with WhoDo, The latest jwm isn't tested fully, I've been using it since it came out and never had a issue, and Barry is using it in woof alpha6 and still no bad reports, but its a tough call, it works really stable, but sometimes things are overlooked, say if you hit 2 keys together and it crashes?? These things haven't really been tested yet. But for everyday use, I give it a thumbs up.

:D Hello,
Been using the new JWM for a few weeks, and it works good, but not perfect..I`ve had the menu freeze twice, but I`m using xcompmgr so...

I rather error on the side of patience.
How much testing is enough, if it were say, a medicine for your child...
Puppy is our Baby, after all, and we don`t want to make it sick... :D

You probably hit the nail on the head with that statement " I`m using xcompmgr" Thats the difference between myself using it everyday for about 2 months without xcompmgr and you using it, Could you report your findings to the patriots JWM thread so they might look into it, since its a bug. Also when the menu froze did you have to restart your pc, or were you able to get out of it via command line?

burniso2cd verify correction from puppy 4.3.1

#34 Post by rerwin »

This correction is part of puppy 4.3.1 and is retrofitted for puppys 4.1.2 and 4.2.1. The correction eliminates bad verifies due to starting of verification before the optical drive is ready. Beware that nothing will appear to be happening for perhaps a half minute, then the drive light will indicate reading of the disk. The attached package is for Puppys based on 4.2.1 only.

Fix for erratic module-loading preference function

#35 Post by rerwin »

WhoDo, et al,
Reports of unreliable handling of module preferences, as given in the BootManager Preference option, probably resulted from a bug in the pup_event_backend_modprobe script, which is responsible for the loading of appropriate hardware driver modules. The attached package, pup_event_backend_modprobe_fix_to_p41x_42x-1.pet, resolves that bug. It should be installed by anyone experiencing a problem with preferred modules not loading (e.g., atl1e instead of atl1c).
