solved: getting wireless to work in Puppy.
Thanks for the answers ..they didn't really deal with my core problem, but I appreciate it anyhow.
I noticed that the new austrumi do have 2.6.10 kernels, but probably due to kernel configuration options, my aironet does come up automatically like it does in puppy 1.0.2.
However I happen to be lucky with the cisco aironet ... there's a myriad of wifi card manufacturers and there's bound to be plenty that puppy won't pick up. I think you'd better mention that too in the wiki.
Now, my core problem was that I didn't have the usual tools for asking a dhcp server for an ip. And I found the answer in the redoutable linuxquestions.org. There's another tool called dhcpcd which can be used. Luckily this is part of the puppy distro, and I finally got connected using it.
