Pmenu - Puppy Menu Editor

Due to a lot of new posters asking how to remove items from the menu, I hacked together Pmenu.
Click on menu items to remove them from the menu. There is also the option to place them back into the menu.
Pmenu will be found under "Utilities".

Edit 3/25/09
Added Pmenu-0.2 for Puppy4.20 only.
Updated Refresh Menu button to use refresh-menus from puppy4.20 which will update the menu and restart jwm.

Good initiative and a bad needed functionality. makes puppy much better. Hope it gets into 4.2x and/or up.

Just tested on Pizza Pup 3.0. Very nice! Lotta bang for the buck. Definitely should come standard on Puppy. Good work!

Just great!
Test in 4.20 RC4. The package did not want to install. I installed manually and it works very well.
Would it be possible for better understanding to display the "comment" of program when moving the mouse over a menu entry?

All works in 4.2 pre-Final except the button to Refresh Menus - no action there. :?

I would need help on adding mouseover comments but I will look into it.

I have the same issue as esmourguit.MSG: couldn't extract to it's directory as it should, or something the like.

Ah, :idea: well fixmenus has been heavily revised for 4.2 to improve performance, and is now called as part of the /usr/bin/refresh-menus script which also restarts the window manager to automatically display changes on the menu. Previously in JWM you had to run fixmenus then restart JWM manually to have the changes implemented in /root/.jwmrc.

The newer implementation also has a pop-up explaining what's happening, so that's why it looked to me like nothing was happening when I hit the button in your Pmenu.

The changes mentioned are in RC4 in case you wanted to try it with your program, trapster. I think it's worth including if you can make that adjustment without breaking anything.

Ah, thank you. I'll have to play with this.

What I'd love to see would be something that would let me move entries from one category to another, and create new categories.

For instance, I have stuff in Utilities that really ought to be elsewhere, and I've been poking around in the background to see what's involved in created a Development menu for things like Python, Eclipse, and Emacs.

Again...that one is currently above my head. Please feel free to amend anything to improve it. This was just something I threw out there.

I have been using this in 4.10 and have not tried it in 4.20RC4 yet.

yes I know the feeling all to well :wink: , If you don't say have the 'refresh' fixed in say 1 day or so, maybe WhoDO, or I could fix it for you so it gets into the final.

I wasn't asking you to do it: merely expressing a wish. :P

I'm still wrapping my head around the XDG menu system, and your app should be a help in understanding things.

Added Pmenu-0.2 in first post to use refresh-menus from Puppy4.20
I left Pmenu-0.1 for pre Puppy 4.20.

Pmenu-0.1 did not want to install in a fresh boot of RC4. I got the message of invalid .tar.gz file or something.
I renamed it to a .tar.gz and it still wouldn't expand. Strange.
I did repackage Pmenu-0.2 while in puppy4.20

refresh-menus took about 20 seconds to work. Seems a little long.
Should the "OK" button be in the dialog that reads "updating"? It seems a noob might think.... ok and click on it. Would clicking on the button kill the updating?

Your damn right its too long :)
Thats all to do with the extra 133 system links they included. So they can change the icons on the taskbar, menu and not just the desktop all at once. I figure save the time, pick one nice theme for the taskbar/menu and revert back to the older and much faster system of the previous 4 series. Plus the 133 system links are in my root/applications which is a real dumb place for newbee's. If they delete that folder which is way easy to do, boom your system is shot.

Brrrpppppp! No Cigar! :lol: :lol: :lol: That has nothing to do with why this script takes as long as it does. There are no "extra 133 system links" for that purpose either. There are no system links at all that relate to the desktop icon themes (incl. menu and taskbar icons). There are system links for the icon2desk drag-n-drop feature BUT those are created only once, as a post install script during the Puppy build process. They are never rebuilt, unless you do that manually, which is unlikely given the level of user they are there for in the first place. 8)

The reason the refresh menus script takes so long is because I have added a call to a background script called menu-fix, which reformats the menus when .pet packagers haven't formatted the .desktop files properly in the first place. In the meantime, coolpup is feverishly updating .desktop files so that stop-gap background script can be removed. :P

The fixmenus script itself is now as fast as it ever was and this issue has nothing to do with that! Geez, Jeff, when you get a bee in your bonnet it just buzzes around in there forever! :roll: :lol:

Well they are still in a bad location :) to easly deleted by newbeees. also remember when the fixmenus was showing all the files and I took a screenshot, well it was showing the system linked bin files etc. Maybe its been changed, I just don't like having so many system links. Oh well nothing I can until I make some sort of version :), Then I'll chop and dice all that crap out of there, lol
