Ok, then the problem comes with the 2.6.3 to 2.6.6 Abiword upgrade. It's not a showstopper, but it would be nice to solve it before Final.

Thanks for checking, micko! 8)

WhoDo if you downgrade Abiword, please add the openxml plugin and maybe the templates, both of these features are well needed and shouldn't be overlooked, as for the problem

(abiword:17856): Pango-WARNING **: shaping failure, expect ugly output. shape-engine='BasicEngineFc', font='Standard Symbols L 32', text=''

Pango has been a problem with the new firefox3 series also. But changing it will lead to numerous other dependencies changes and isn't feasible at this point. I'll spend 30 mins or so trying to fix it and report back.

Silver-delite and Spreadbuntu made way for space considerations. Unfortunately I only deleted the shortcuts in RC4. The /images directories will also go in the next release - 177kb toward the 100Mb target for release. Nothing wrong with the themes at all; just the others can be had for only 1 directory in /images vs. 3 if I leave these in.

Not considering a roll back, ttuuxxx. Abiword 2.6.6 has too many nice features to let this one problem cause us to revert.

@micko - can you test to see whether it only happens with DejaVu or does it happen even with the default Sans?

Ok. It's just not serious enough to throw everything out because Pango won't play with Symbols. If you can't fix it, we'll go with things as they are. Nothing is perfect in life, as we all know only too well. If this is the worst fault in Deep Thought then we've done pretty well IMHO.

Are you saying your going to delete the images directory? you can't it has all the main images for all 7 themes. the total size of that directory compressed is 58kb pet or 243kb extracted. If you were to delete the 2 themes only delete the 2 folders
/usr/share/icewm/images/Silver-delite
/usr/share/icewm/images/SpreadBuntu
do not delete
/usr/share/icewm/images/original

Cups & Printers

#201 Post by Firefox »

Hi whodo,

I`m still having some trouble setting up my Printer on 4.2rc4.
Full Hard drive install HPdeskjet 710c on parallel port.
It runs ok on pup vers 3.01, CUPS ver 1.2.xx but not on the 4 series pups.
I noticed by comparison vers 3.01 has lots of Pearl scripts
foomat-rip and foomatic-gswrapper among them.
In 4.2rc4 foomatic-rip is in /usr/bin as a gearwheel icon and foomatic-gswrapper is missing.
Also missing is pnm2ppa-1.12.tar.gz compiled in, this gives the mod.config file
necessary to setup the printer.
I usually have to install devx_420.sfs and compile it myself in version 3.01.
Also missing is printer drivers in /usr/share/cups/model for hp710c,720c,722c printers. Ive even put it in /etc/cups/ppd as well.
Ive tried everything over the past few days but one thing that crops up a lot is
/ioerror -outputpage-. And even when it disapears after messing with files and permissions it still refuses to work.
Can you help? or does it require someone with a similar printer for testing.
Everyone seems to be quite happy with the new cups but I want the old one back.
Thanks for your hard work every contributer and what a great distro by the way, I like the colours in rc3 and think some of the brown backgrounds look cool.

Choose any font. It is not font related, I think I said I tried a couple when I originally posted the bug, but I did try again, six or seven different fonts.. as soon as you click "Symbol"... *crash* :(

No, just these two subdirectories
/usr/share/icewm/images/Silver-delite
/usr/share/icewm/images/SpreadBuntu
58kb compressed is fine, but 177kb uncompressed is how they sit in the Unleashed tree. I probably haven't saved all that much, but every little bit helps. I'll happily put them back if I can find at least 500kb somewhere else.

I'm not willing to go to the lengths of deleting directories in /usr/lib, since those are put back there every time by the createpuppy script pulling them from their individual packages. I'd have to delete and replace them for every single build. Then there's the complications that raises for RemaX when removing those applications - their libs would get left behind because they wouldn't exist where they are supposed to within the pup_420.sfs file. :(

There has to be some other way. We just haven't found it yet is all.

Cups can work....

#206 Post by Minnesota »

First of all inset from the menu a symbol and POOF.. not just crash.... abiword gone...from the screen.

Problem of CPU 100% usage Cups. I hit on it by accident then it took an hour to duplicate.

Turn on Htop so you can see the action happening.

Menu/System/manage printing

Set up any printer.. even if not attached...

If you don't have an attached printer set it up on LPT1.
Use any short name.. I first used "Can" for Canon.
I used Pixma ip4300
Take the defaults for options.

Look at the htop. 100%...CPU

Open Abiword...

Type in anything..
Select to print to CAN - printer you just set up.
It probably will indicate job completed if you use lpt1 and have very little data.

Still at 100% CPU.

Show all jobs just to see the printed job finished.

NOW CANCEL the cups white window.. with the X in the upper right corner...

Still 100% CPU....

Menu/system/manage printer

You will be on the Admin tab.. asking for options....

LET THE initial window sit... do not do anything!!!

Suddenly... cpu usage DROPS.....

It is up to someone with more internal knowledge to tell why!

Greg

PS... I think you don't even need to set up and test a printer... just kill admin screen the first time.. and start it again!!

Shortcut... open manage printer... add printer... when you get username / password..press the X.... now open again.. .cpu usage DROPS...

Is problem with username/password?

RC4...no additional patches...

Well how about deleting
/usr/share/themes/Stardust
/usr/share/themes/DeepThought
those 2 themes take 90kb out of 159kb for the whole 18 themes combined in that folder and they both don't follow the clearlooks guidelines, which will cause issues with missing dependencies in some software and make other applications somewhat less stable.
Also here's a alternative start button that users have been asking for jwm, I reduced the size and trimmed it to fit better in JWM. Maybe just include it in the deep thought theme folder. If you like, if not I understand, not try to make waves, just trying to give people what they asked for. Can I have like 2 days to work on all these issues like cups and abiword? You know me, I'll be working on it day and night :)

xorgwizard

#208 Post by jayargent »

@Pizzasgood:

Answers to some of your questions...

I have a graphics card plus onboard video. From taking a quick look at the two xorg.conf files this is probably the reason for the difficulty.

Always in the past if I selected Xorg and did not test it would then dump me to the command line when I tried to start X. And yes, Xvesa works and has always worked.

I have not done anything with xorgwizard.mo yet. Probably tomorrow.

Ok guys the abiword problem is 100% pango's fault,
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=493565
Basically they had it on Ubuntu and set the error to abiword and abiword set it to pango and they made a patch, lol They should of just asked me, it would save saved them some time, lol anyways I've compiled 3 pangos , the current version in puppy and the previous version and the next newer version than the one in puppy and they all crash with that symbol error. Still working on it.

The pango issue won't stop Debian using Abiword and it won't stop us either.

The CUPS issue is a problem, but at least we know about it and we know that there is a patch or fix available.

I'm not going to upload the next version this weekend. It would be pointless with so little to do before Final. You'll have your "2 days".

The Deep Thought theme is central to this release. You know I can't and won't take that out at this stage. Your extra Icewm themes were not central to this release. Like the other "Bling" you have been protesting about elsewhere, they can still be added later without a problem. They are not a usability feature nor even a part of the overall look and feel. Offer a ttuuxxx Bling.pet if you like; include the Puppy-4.2 button you made for JWM, too. With only the Final release to go, I'm not making any changes that don't add significant value to the total package. Call me short-sighted if you like but there you have it.

Naa it doesn't bug me if those 2 themes stay or go, just ecomoney did post that they would be great window refugees, well the silver xp one, but I guess put them on the chopping block. New users will just have to adapt. lol
