IMO The main benefit of xfce is its handling of WM hints - e.g. it handles utility windows (as used in the Gimp) correctly.
it also happens to (in my experience) play very nicely with the whole compiz / compiz-fusion environment - and it's probably the most light-weight desktop available that does so
Isn't xfwm a compositing WM too?

gray,

disciple is right, i don't suppose you compiled XFCE with transparency? It's a really nice touch.

I have the libraries you need to do this with, if you need em.

Thanks,

n4l.

Gray,

I have managed to install xfce and the libs, but im having problems editing the xinitrc file. I've attached it for reference. Im using your release of BoxPup, and I love it, i'd just like to be able to use compiz with it. (why im installing xfce).
The areas you said to comment out i couldn't find. I commented out what looked to be similar and then added your commands, but that ended up giving me an endless loop when trying to start xorg or xvesa.
Any help would be appreciated!

by the way, any plans for updating your release of boxpup?

Anyone able to help me out with this? Im sure the solution isnt that difficult, im just not exactly clear on what to do since my xinitrc is different from the example.
Thanks.

Hi, I've just installed it and it works well, very nice fonts too so thanks again. I've seen XFCE described as "Windows 98 done right" and it certainly seems that way.

The only change I'd make is to the theme and wallpaper; the default ones are certainly dramatic but a bit "heavy" to use all the time. It'd be good to have a pet of themes for XFCE like there are for JWM and IceWM.

True, and thanks for replying.

Where's the directory for installing them into Puppy, or isn't it necessary?

good question.
/usr/share/themes and /usr/share/icons and /root/.icons for cursor themes.
I use xfce 4.2 so I manually put files in appropriate places

Thanks, but sadly my old 17" monitor went up in smoke (or as good as) yesterday morning so I'm now viewing Puppy on a 15" SVGA monitor. I therefore need a WM that's economical on screen estate, like Fluxbox.

Best,

Colonel Panic .

I suggest misco for good deals on a flat screen in the uk...they are sooo nice and yer desk suddenly gets much bigger :D

Thanks, but as money's a bit tight for me at the moment it will probably have to wait for a bit. I'll try and manage with what I've got now; maybe choose a more readable font or something.

This one's not a bad monitor and made by the same company as the 17", but the reduction in screen size does make a difference.

It would probably save me money in the long run though, that old monitor used to chuck out a fair amount of heat (and more than this one does).

Could try altering the X font resolution...gives nice bold text on smaller screens..
and xfce control panel has font size options too..ended up look good on a notebook mini screen
mike

ps flat screens in cash converters and such are getting cheap too

Thanks for the advice (X font resolution? I've got some reading to do here by the looks of it).

Cheers,

There was a set global font size utility but basically in /root/.Xresources its
Xft.dpi: 84 sort of thing

Hey guys,
sorry for bumping up the old issue again, but there's a cairo patch available for XFCE 4.6.1. Can somebody please tell me how to patch it into xfce (or maybe give it a shot himself)? I wanted to throw it into gcc (just downloaded the whole src package), but I can't say that I'm very familiar with it. :-(

Any advice?
