Puppy 4.2 RC1 Deep Thought - Bugs & Fixes

#1 Post by WhoDo »

I have just uploaded the first Release Candidate for Puppy 4.2 Deep Thought with Seamonkey and Claws mail. There are very few issues with this one and we may even have resolved the CUPS printing issues:

Known issues:

1. There are now four desktop icon themes - Deepthought, Original, JQ8FlatLite and Stardust - they still aren't in sync yet, but I'm working on that when I get the opportunity.
2. Blinky still starts up but disappears after any jwmconfig change - any takers?
3. I still haven't set /usr/share/doc/home.html as the default home page for Seamonkey. It's there and contains the link to the puppy web portal but you'll need to add it manually to test.

New applications include Pwidgets (1.7-1), Pbackup (3.1.5) and Pschedule-0.6.

Coolpup has continued to submit back-end updates as have aragon and ttuuxxx. The localisation team including esmourgit and droope have continued to supply localised scripts. Zigbert, trio, 01micko and tasmod are continually churning out new widgets. All have my sincere thanks for their support of the project.

Mirrors:
1. http://puppyisos.org/isos/2009-01-to-06/4.2-rc1/ (user=puppy pwd=linux)
2. http://www.pkagfiles.net/puppy-test/
3. http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/test/

If the mirrors don't show the new release yet it's probably because the admins haven't had time to move the files to the download area ... try again later.

This release is 100.29Mb, including CUPS, so I still have to prune some more to find room for RemaX (Remaster Express from pa-mcclamrock).

New or updated files
Here's The latest update to CUPS, it has patroits parallel fix, plus I updated Barry's script to go directly to the printer setup/admin page bypassing the Info page which will be less confusing, also I removed the help documents and made a separate package, Since 95% of the help documents aren't related to the printer setups, Would be nice if a user would make a small html help document actually related to installing a new printer with jpg images. :)

@ whodo

a recent found bug with b2 was, that it didn't pick up settings from /etc/wgetrc (due to wrong set sysconfdir at compiling).

the attached wget-1.11.4 is now configured correctly.

as i don't think you updated wget between b2 and rc1, please update now.

as a new version of a shutdown-dialog i made the attached one.

it now 'follows' the icewm-shutdown and has also the refresh menu.

as said before: i don't know if it has to be added to ptray.

i created this because i think it's a little 'direct' to shutdown from the upper-tray without any option.

use if you like.

I'm downloading it as soon as I get chance. I would consider adding aragon's shutdown dialog, agree that straightforward shuting is something most wouldn't like.

*EDIT: aragon's version of the ttuuxxx's shutdown dialog

The JWM themes impressed me. I love the JQBflat and Deep Thought and original is back too.

Meebo - great
Time to play
If in doubt download and PLAY (took me an hour on fast broadband - so might be worth waiting a little while)

I would not say that aragon's shutdown dialog, Its a direct ripoff of the ones I've been building with a couple suttle changes to the code where it tries to take 100% credit for it.
hey maybe I'll change a couple icons in Pburn, remove a couple options and call it tuxburn, and call it all my own idea because we had a need to ripoff someone else work and alter it without permission or giving credit. LOL thats crap, I wouldn't do it and sure as hell pisses me off seeing it plastered on page 1.

Didn't know, I haven't followed the hole development posts, please remove my post if it's an issue, my intention was to suggest to include it in official release.

Well since I've been doing the shut down dialogs since early 4.2 alpha and before that I made one for 302 and before that I had them in my Fire Hydrant releases, Really the only help I had with any of them was Harrywill lent me a hand with the tabbed feature in 4.2, due to complaints about too many selections :)
Ps if you want one for jwm, I'll build one right now:), Since printing is now working :)

Just downloaded and burned Deep Thought RC1 Running from Live CD

CUPS recognises the printer (HP Officejet G85) but will not actually print a test page. I don't think the solution is far away though. I wonder if it could be caused by a missing symlink somewhere or even a permissions problem

Claws mail seems to have no option setting to set authentication for outgoing email (IMAP). The configuration menu option is greyed out on my system. The program cannot be terminated by exiting via the close window icon. But stick with it. Claws is brilliant when it works.

The default theme is a bit too orangey for me. I'm more of a bluey person.

Seamonkey is lightning fast here, so that's a good choice.

Will be fine when these above-mentioned problems get solved.

Boot screen still shows BETA.

Printing works on USB on HP zv6100.

On tower where printing worked under 3.x and 4.1x, will not print on LPT "Unable to open device file ldevlp0 : Permission Denied".
Was able to print using USB.

I sure hope this all gets sorted out before long.

yes I noticed that to, straight away actually, once the printing did work, I went straight to usr/libs and had a look around. thanks for reminding me :)

RC1 here still shows the very same behavior, ESP ... 8.15.2.

Was this double-checked for before
putting the RC1 ISO file on the servers?
I suspect not ...

This Puppy observation brought to you by:
Puppy Linux 4.2.RC.1 on my 64 MB(!) Gateway 2000,
"puppy pfix=ram", 200+ MB Linux swap.

Thanks,

Thanks maddox but I remembered after that, When I was compiling Ghostscript it produces a very large bin over 11MB stripped, On previous older ghostscripts like the one in puppy 3 and 4.0-4.12 you can reduce the bin file by making it a .so file but with the newer one it has a documented problem with out glibc and produces a error and just doesn't work right, So either we use the older ghostscript sources/package or what I did was reuse the older bin+lib .so file which saved us around 5MB and used it in the latest version. :)
But since then I recompiled it on 4.2 beta 2 and managed to get the bin split into a bin+.so but when I went to strip it, it didn't reduce in size.
libgs.so.8.64 <---11MB stripped or not
libgs.so.8.15 <---3.9MB (older version)
So the Ghostscript pacakge is 96% new and 4%old but that wouldn't count for a permissions problem.

Thank you development team, 4.2 is going to be the best release ever.

Some minor issues:

1. Trash icon located about mid screen.
2. Pwidgets 1.7-1 has introduced some problems that were not present with 1.6 in the last 4.2 beta ie. weather widgets don't work, also after adding rss feeds, slideshow, & todays date, widgets will not respond to any changes. Additional clock skins are also missing. I'll post details to pwidgits thread. EDIT: Switched to icewm and weather widget does work and am able to change widgets again.
3. Printing works, somewhat, CUPS recognized my HP5280 printer and did provide a driver selection that allows me to print a test page. However, when I tried to update the printer drivers with later hpijs .pets, CUPS would lock up after selecting modify printer.

Other than above this release works great on my Dell Dimension 8250.

Thanks,
Jim
