I seemed to have messed up my frugall install of 4.12 by just installing
bash-4.0 and then restarting x. It began looking for dependencies set my memory to 0 and generally caused mayhem

Not the intention I am sure :)
Does it work on 4.2 Beta (take care!)
I don't know and thanks ffor testing it, i'm staying away from it :) Just finally installed 4.2 and I'm not messing it up, well not already anyways :)

Hi Lobster,

what can i say

thats what i ment with testing, but not with that result...

it was compiled on 4.12 and packaged like the original bash from the repos.

i hope there wasn't something ireparable?

i will delete the files from the post and investigate.

sorry again

No worries . . . 8)

Are we still using busybox with some bash commands or the full Bash?
Puppy is very dependent on Bash scripting.
So this is hardly surprising. I would suggest the full Bash may be unsuitable for this release
BUT with warnings - I am not quite sure how they would go - of how to use, it might be of interest to developers.
something irreparable?

Hmmm ...

I'm still recovering from flu and just dropped by to see how's things are going ... It seems that cups is still a show stopper hmmm ...

But that's not my concern right now. I've just ran a copy of pup 4.2beta with a groggy head and bleary eyes ... I've noticed something very disturbing ...

On a 32MB save file, on the 2nd reboot there's roughly 22MB taken by what ? who ? when ? how ?

I almost jumped out of my skin even with my groggy head ...

I looked for clues and either intentionally or unintentionally, someone put a bunch of stuffs into /root/my applications ... There's a bunch of 19MB wasted "garbage" recklessly copied on 2nd bootup to the save-file (all into /root/my applications) ... Anyone noticed the sloooowwww 2nd bootup ? ... There's also duplicated files there ... Let's see, abiword at 6.5MB duplicated ... add-up all the duplicated files and no wonder you're going above 100MB ...

Want to see it for yourself ? Make a new 32MB save-file from a fresh 4.2b and reboot into it again for the "garbage" to fill in. Now, reboot from a different save-file and open up the previous one and see for yourself ...

Please, move those stuffs out to somewhere more appropriate and keep that folder clean ... /root/my applications is not the place for permanent distro system binaries and utils, especially in puppy's case with save-file linked to the folder ...

Thats to do with the icons switcher so you don't get the shortcut symbol on the desktop icons, I for one wasn't for it being there either, now we have a reason to revert back to the older system :)

As for cups I've been working on that today, with puppy 4.2 alpha 4 we made a version without cups and its dependencies, So I packaged up everything and it worked:) but 2 releases later its still not working, I checked the files and the permissions are fine, and the setup works, but when you click print, nothing nada, zero.

WhoDo did you remove or update anything related to cups, like pdf, etc?

As a last resort Idea, could be, I could make a-in-one pet including all 6 packages with a link to the menu, So if a user wants printing, they click the link, the pet installer opens, 2 clicks later the printer pet package is installed.
The Ghostscript package registers as a earlier model because remember I reused Barry's Bin and 1 lib, to save over 2MB compressed, It still works fine when we used it in the alpaha 4 release.

Here's a light(weight) cursor pack for Puppy 4.2.

Perfect for Windows (and Linux*) refugees

* = bloated Linux distros

Package contents:
PCursor 0.1 by wow and some of the best light cursor themes:

- Neutral Plus Inverted for Ubuntu/Fedora refugees
- Classic White for WinXP refugees (best theme ever ;))
- Aero (without DS) for Vista/Win7 refugees

Stripped and tweaked for Puppy.

Enjoy!

Why? Gpicview is better and it has a slideshow option courtesy of HairyWill.

I don't see any copyright information on the site - no Freeware, GPL, LGPL, CCbA, nada. I'd love to include one or two if I could be sure we weren't in breach of copyright or opening ourselves to a security flaw, trojan-style. Care to do the research, Ed?

Recompiled openssl only had gimphoto and filezilla installed at the time, so all should be well this time WhoDo, I followed Barrys past example on stripping it but I added the dev package which is handy for many other programs that require the full package.

Plus puppy doesn't come with any extra cursor themes so this will add a bit of weight in the end.
Not strictly true. Puppy-4.2 DeepThought comes with AeroDS as the default cursor - like XP/Vista with a drop shadow to boot! I'm just disappointed that you didn't notice! :(

Nope, sorry. I like the idea but it's a bit late for 4.2 and it needs the preview option as ttuuxxx pointed out.

MU made a cursor-selector back in the dotpup era, and I regularly included that with EZpup. It had a preview option that temporarily swapped the cursor with some X-server trickery. You were then urged to properly restart the X-server when you had your final selection. That wasn't a complete solution but it worked.

Why isn't it in? Because MU's cursor selector was based on Gtk-1 and we now use Gtk-2. If someone wanted to modify MU's program for Gtk-2 it might be worth including OR if someone wanted to add the preview component from MU's cursor selector to Wow's more recent effort it might also be a winner.

Man, I thought you legal types were into black and gray! Shiney-Single is brighter than a cross-country trucker's high beam! It'll certainly go with some of those candy-store escapee themes you've devised! :P

I've just received the latest openssl-0.98j recompiled by coolpup. I'll test that and see if it throws up any dependency issues in Unleashed. If not, then I'll upload it here so you can try it in your CUPS testing.

Clock's ticking, ttuuxxx! tick tick tick tick tick tick .... :P 4 hours until I close off Beta3 ...!

Zigbert's icon2desk program was creating hard links and copying stuff to /root/my-applications/bin ... that's fixed for the next release. Go back to your lemon tea and aromatic oils! :P

No. After Alpha 4 all I did was put back in what you supplied. I still think the problem may be tied to openssl-0.98e instead of openssl-0.98j - but then Alpha 4 had the earlier library anyway. :?

An inverted version of the default Puppy theme would be the best choice.

Try 'Neutral Plus Inverted' from the light cursors pack.

Hey WhoDo here's the small Comic orange Cursor that matches deep thoughts colour scheme. Kind of big for just 1 theme, its because of all the animation, I wonder what would happen if a few parts were removed.
