Lighthouse Pup 4.4.2 Final SMP 194M
remotedesktopclient
I have tried to install RDP from puppypackagemanager and downloaded 8 to 10 files. It appears in the menu but nothing happens when initiated. I have tried the terminal, but do not know enough to understand what all the messages mean. Older versions used to include this program as a standard part of the operating system, but none of the newer puppies seem to have it or be able to install it. This is the only means of accessing my email and files at work.
Is there some information somewhere on how to get this program working.
thanks for any clues.

BHINTZ,
I don't have rdesktop working in Lighthouse Pup, but maybe something in this thread will help:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=31702
[Edit: and http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=323941 ]
It was suggested to run it from a command line. You might try it with official Puppy 4.xx first to keep things simple.

BHINTZ,
Thanks for reporting what works, that may help others and maybe I could include this in a future release. Good job!

booting latest iso results in blankscreen
hello tazoc,
(and hello community-- I'm strapped for time right now but will be posting to Introduce Yourself thread sometime soon)
I've been trying your derivative over time, and now it's my main choice due to a decent package of stuff but especially the SMP support and apparently the recentness of the kernel which for me means better battery life. (The clockrate-tweaker util included in Barry's latest dev vers proves dangerous for me.. can result in inexplicable sudden poweroffs under some sceneria) (BTW, I was pretty delighted to see the Digital Audio Workstation compile by agitprop666... it was done using the RealTime compile options for music/audio purposes.. any chance of yours using this next release? Just a thought.)
What I want to post about quickly here, as opposed to some kind of full review which I've not time for now, is that you need to debug the video config setup process. Im using the 442beta1 now on my HPcompaq nx9300 .. I appreciated your effort to build-in the nvidia config stuff as opposed to having to later apply .pet or .sfs packages.. my recollection is that it wasnt _thoroughly_ smooth sailing but with a minimal amount of futzing around I got the 173 drivers working great on it.
But I wanted to start fresh with the latest (having got myself confused somewhat with the xdelta stuff after awhile) and grabbed the latest .iso .. I'm going to have to get my video-recording equipment working to get screenshots of some error msgs that blurt out... but in a nutshell, just selecting the nvidia, then 173, eventually brings me to a blank screen (looks like it wants to be X running, but no prompt or graphic characters of any kind).. ctrl-alt-del gets me a reboot but couldnt get ctl-alt-bkspc (tried ctl-shift-bkspc too, forget which it is) .. no joy there...
anyways, I'll hopefully soon get the time to give you a better bug report than this, but just wanted to make you aware of it..
the other huge issue for me and LHP is the inability to paste to terminal windows??!!? Something I absolutely was addicted to on the standard releases.. albeit with the pain-in-the-butt pseudo-middlebutton method of having to click right and left buttons at once, it did work. I've tried the autocutsel .pet and n either glipper nor parcellite are of any help.. have been having to fire up leafpad and write a script with whatevers in the clip buffer, then save and run the script.. (just noticed your addressing this in Release Notes.. but I run JWM not Icewm.. should I switch?)
once again, THANKS for all your efforts!

Most apps display OK but the text gets all messed up in firefox (see image).
If I use the scroll bar to move text off screen and back on it returns OK but as soon as I click on the page I get the fuzziness back. I tried changing font and also updated to the latest version of firefox - no difference. I just set up tkhearts and it displays incorrectly also in the title bar (image2).
Could it be drivers or graphics card or GTK?
I tried several different GTK themes and fonts but same result
I switched to seamonkey and the pages that were messed up in firefox display fine.
Maybe this problem has already been solved but I couldn't find it.
Any suggestions? This is the first time I've seen this and it's annoying.
I could switch to seamonkey but I prefer firefox.

try this it worked for me. goto preferences/content/fonts and colors/advanced/set minimum font to 12 /uncheck allow pages to set font
Hello OTRhound and welcome!
Try LXTerminal, it's in the Utilities menu about half-way down. In LXTerminal copy and paste works directly without the need for a clipboard manager.
Feel free to try IceWM or LXDE. LXDE has LXTerminal right in the quick launch bar of the panel.
I don't have a suitable display adapter to test the nVidia 173. The kernel, drivers, Xorg and xorgwizard are from another puplet, Newyearspup with Xorg 7.4. As this configuration differs from Official Puppy, results may vary. Please try other options, such as 'nv' or 'xorgwizard, force vesa' if the 173 drivers do not work.
I'm experimenting with some newer kernels, including the RealTime one you mentioned. I wasn't able to get ATI Catalyst drivers for my hardware to compile in it, though my compiling experience is quite limited.
Thank you for testing Lighthouse Pup and for your feedback,
TazOC

Hi TazOC,
Still enjoying the KDE Desktop. Just for info, Bibletime 2.2.1 is out, source code is at http://sourceforge.net/projects/bibletime/files/, Ubuntu deb files which may work to update your sfs are at https://launchpad.net/~pkgcrosswire/+archive/ppa
How close are you to final on 4.4.2?
Thanks,
Jim

Hi all, I was wondering how you go about installing software from source, everytime I try, say with something like avant window navigator, I always end up with error about there being no acceptable c compiler and error for gcc and cc. Also when using KDE with compiz my panel ends up with a border around like it is being treated as an open window with the words Qt-subapplication in the title bar and the min,max and close buttons. Any advice on either of these would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Jason

@Jim1911,
Thanks for the Bibletime links. I've had good luck with the debian packages at http://packages.debian.org/sid/bibletime. However if I have any problem I'll try the Ubuntu packages at your link. I've never compiled it from source.
I hope to have a 442 final within a couple of weeks. 443 development is going very slowly but hopefully I will have an alpha sometime after, with KDE 4.3, and possibly a new kernel.
@jasmac,
Thank you again for your graphics, they really give Lighthouse Pup a positive identity and look great.
The development add-ons at http://www.lhpup.org/download.htm#dev are about all I can offer. I've only compiled qps and freespace from source (see /root/my-applications/freespace/.) Other more complex attempts also failed. I plan to try Barry's upcoming kernel from Puppy 4.3beta2 which hopefully will have good driver and development support in the future.
I haven't seen the C-F bug you're having. If I can think of anything that might help I'll let you know.
@pudgypup,
Glad your mouse is working. Thanks for the update!

Google Earth 5
Hi Tazoc,
As your Google Earth 4 sfs ran well on my puppy 4.1.2 livecd I expected the same with GE 5.
Howeveer whichever installprog I use it is all different. One says "could not load" when I try the next one it says "already loaded".
The other says "succesfully loaded" and then there's no menu entry.
Yes your sfs's are made for your voyagers etc., but as GE4 gave no problem I was wondering why this is with GE5 ?

Hi nancy reagan,
I don't know how to get GE5 working in Puppy. I tried installing Qt4 toolkit and some missing libs, but then I get "symbol lookup error".
Lighthouse Pup includes many updated and extra components that work with KDE and other software. If I knew which are needed maybe I could figure it out, but the GoogleEarth web site was no help for me.

thank you for your efforts.
If I downed one of your isos can I run them foolproof, i.e. live ?
If yes, how does one load sfs's in your iso's ?
If yes, which distro do you recommend 512 ram ati (don't know what notebook) 5 yr old.
MM Fun etc.
Strange though GE4 out of the box etc.
Nancy,
I use the same method as Official Puppy for merging SFS--create a pup_save, save SFS to '/mnt/home', enable SFS in Bootmanager:SFS Files and reboot.
For a LiveCD you might look at Tipsy Puppy R1 at http://puppylinuxstuff.meownplanet.net/down3.html#tipsy

Movies run, trackball wheel works... cant install Blender !
Tazoc:
Sorry took so long to report but I,ve been away for over a week from my 4.4.2d lighthouse box.
Indeed with the Mariner SFS loaded it plays avi movies just fine...and my Logitech Trackman Wheel works perfectly....
My rig is a Zotac GeForce 9400-ITX board (that integrates a Nvidia 9400 card and miniature WiFi) + Intel Core 2Duo E8400 @ 3.0 Ghz + 4 Gb RAM + Corsair P128 Gb SSD +three fans inside an 8"x 8" case.
Your KDE sfs is a thing of beauty but crashed on me repeatedly after a while (slow cursor response, blank windows and then total collapse). So I switched to LXDE, which has been stable and much better behaved.
My present issue is that I need Blender installed, yet after following the .pet sequence Blender installation described here (that worked like a charm in boxpup/Gallibox)...
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=45015
... I get "Blender" in the GRAPHIC menu, but nothing happens when clicking on it and when running "blender" from LXTerminal I get:
sh-3.00# blender
Compiled with Python version 2.5.2.
'import site' failed; use -v for traceback
Checking for installed Python... No installed Python found.
Only built-in modules are available. Some scripts may not run.
Continuing happily.

jade14,
Glad LXDE is working well for you. KDE's plasma desktop can be difficult to cure. Thank you for your feedback. I just finished 10 uploads and updated the web site which took several hours in all. (See next post.)
So I need some rest now but I will have a go at Blender tomorrow to see if I can get it to work and let you know.
