Old versions of GParted didn't ask you what drive to look at.
Unless you dropped down you couldn't see other drives.

That HP booter formatter sometimes just get's Humpty Dumpy USBs
to finally work.

Go for Fat16 on your USB ....it does not install...
the HP is just an execute file.

You aren't going to find any Puppy that will fit in 64 MB and have room for an adequate pup_save file.

You are experiencing one of the ongoing problems with the Puppy Universal Installer. It does not appear to check if the target drive has enough space to accept the install.

Yes 64 mb. It's the pen drive that came with my wife's new Dell, and the machine is at her office an unavailable to me, I have to wait until I'm at work before such machines are available. So I'll use the 64mb with the ultra lite distros to experiment with this love hate relationship booting USB.

When cthisbear mentioned boot flag, I checked and the drive was not flagged.

I used Puppy412 Gparted to delete and format a new Fat-32 with the boot flag. I did not add the flag lba? Then used universal installer, and installed the distro. Gparted insisted upon a disk label so I let it create an msdos label?

Tried to boot this into Puppy412 using WakePup, no good. It cannot find the puppy files on any drive .

I'll be satisfied if I can simply boot this flash drive using a new machine which offers all the bells and whistles.

I simply want to get the thing to boot. I don't care if it saves unless a save-file is absolutely necessary to make this work. It seems to me the installer should install all of John's 50mb puppy on a 64mb drive But heck what do I know

I suppose I should follow cthisbear recommendation and redo the flash drive using FAT-16

Assuming "meanpup" is exactly 50mb and the smallest save
file you can make is 16 mb; it still won't fit.

One gb flash-drives sell for 5 dollars or less now.

OK allowing for an accumulation of manufacturing errors, perhaps a 50mb puppy will not work on the 64mb pen drive. However, after wiping the drive with the latest Gparted that comes with Parted Magic and formatting FAT-16 and adding the boot flag. It seems the Fat-16 partition is ~56mb after installing MeanPup the file system size is ~54mb. Of course there is no save-file.

[SO] rjb you win To put to bed the possibility that the problem is with the pen drive size, I will soon become the proud owner of a 1-gig pen drive.

It's snowing here and it may well be awhile before I venture out. I'll post when the 1-gig shows its stuff

Just because I don't believe it's possible, doesn't mean you should
quit trying. I'm usually wrong more often than right.

There are a few pups even smaller than 50mb. Rather impractical
and old, but might be fun to play around with.

Okay;

I was wrong big time.
I just used the universal-installer to install "fat-free" 301 to a flash
with fat16 partition and boot flag set.
This time when it said finshed and ejected the cd, I removed cd,
rebooted with wake-pup2 boot floppy
and it worked fine.
Fat-free 301 is only using 62.41 mb. No pup-save file needed.

And Fat Free is big time cool as well as fun especially in the "Whtie Fang" carnation. But... some lappy keyboards [like one compaq that I have] don't work properly... Oh well My first wife wasn't perfect either!!! RP

Thanks for the follow up testing, and I'm pleased that at least you can boot. I'm beginning to believe, after chasing the solution for over two weeks, there is no solution for me. Like the good Bar-B-Q folks say "The secret is in the sauce." Well, I may try different ingredients later, but right now I feel whipped.
