PostPosted: Sat 14 Feb 2009, 16:36    Post subject:  Can't use xorg
Subject description: I can run Xvesa but not Xorg

XORG won't run and I assume I have some kind of driver problem. Nothing I have researched so far on the forums has helped me. I'm using MediaPup for the live Wine. Whenever I try to run wow.exe it gives me a no suitable display driver message. I know this is because my card is'nt being picked up on XVESA. This Puplet uses 4.1.2 and My card is an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200.
Please help,
Pharis

Tried that to no avail.
Should I be using the Nvidia driver or should I switch to "vesa" or "nv" ?

the pet should offer to modify xorg.conf to nvidia.
If that fails, you need to attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
To get a copy of it, type (before restarting X with a different driver like vesa or nv):
cp -ax /var/log/Xorg.0.log /root/
gzip /root/Xorg.0.log

then attach here /root/Xorg.0.log.gz

All right, I did that.
So, now I just restart X?
It seems like there may be further instructions.

It occurred to me that you wanted me to post the log file here as an attachment.
Man I'm dumb sometimes.
Regardless of my inferior intellect I am now attaching the file.
Thanks,

ok, you use the retro kernel, so the pet does not work.
this might work:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=22272
But it also might not work, as though the kernel has the same versionnumber, it was compiled differently.

If it fails, I would suggest to use the standard Puppy with the pet you downloaded first.

Nope I can't get x to work. But my Standard Puppy doesn't have wine and I need to run this live and to get wine I need to frugal or full install to change the ".sfs"s. If this is hopeless could you help me on running wine live? Thanks for all your help so far

try a puplet with everything inluded, like newyearspup midi rc2:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=37960

It still is a bit experimental, but maybe you have luck and it works on your computer.

I will try that and see what happens. I'm currently using the standard Puppy 4.1.2 by the way.
Thanks,
Pharis

for the standard Puppy with kernel 2.6.25.16(not retro), try the first pet:
http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/NOP/NVIDIA-173.14.12-k2.6.25.16.pet
If that fails, it also might help to see the Xorg.0.log.

In case it works, wine might be added as pet package, then you could remaster Puppy.

Just got the old new pet back(boy that's a mouthful) and I was going to reboot but since I have newyearspup downloading I was curious if seamonkey will resume downloads? If so I'll reboot now ,but if not I think I'll do it later.
