Recoll: Qt4-based text search utility for pup4

http://www.lesbonscomptes.com/recoll/

Image
# Easy installation, few dependancies. No database daemon, web server, desktop environment or exotic language necessary.
# Will run on most Unix-based systems
# Qt-based GUI. Can use either Qt 3 or Qt 4.
# Searches most common document types, emails and their attachments.
# Powerful query facilities, with boolean searches, phrases, proximity, wildcards, filter on file types and directory tree.
# Multi-language and multi-character set with Unicode based internals.
Being qt4-based, it requires the installation of qt4-4.3.2.pet (4Mbytes)

Also, since this package doesn't contain the needed library, libQt4Support.so.4, it needs the attached libQt4Support.so.4.pet PLUS the xapian-core-1.0.17.pet.

Run via Menu->FileSystem->Recoll

I just got distracted by something or other. For a qt3-based version, of the previous recoll release, it's available here

I gather from this that the indexes that Recoll makes are pretty huge. Before I install and try it out, just wanted to check if anyone else has any experience of how big a typical index is? It seems like a great tool, but afraid of overwhelming my pup_save...

Thanks a lot for compiling this, muggins!

shankargopal,

Of the top of my head I can't recall the size of the saved index, but it's a simple matter, if you're worried of swamping you're pup_save.2fs file, to either save to /mnt/home, or re-direct the index file saved in /root, via a symlink, to /mnt/home.

Yes, I was planning to do that, but a large index would swamp pretty much all my storage (I use a flash drive based Puppy...)

However that seems unavoidable, because this in fact clearly says that a typical Xapian index is as large as the material being indexed... oh well... maybe I should purchase a larger pen drive :). Though frankly having an index that large doesn't seem too good an idea for a search engine.

Ok, I did manage to get a larger flash drive (by luck), so running recoll on it. It's not as bad as it seems - I have it indexing a file store of around 300 MB (mostly documents), and the index is 142 MB in size.

Note though that to really use Recoll's full functionality, you need to install additional helper tools - I've posted dotpets for them here. Without them, Recoll will only index the file names of most documents, which is not much use. If you install those three dotpets, the only missing helper for Recoll appears to be a Perl module for getting metadata from images.
