With a fresh copy of alpha4, I did the following: Abiword only gave me three options, but one was my printer.

It printed fine.

@ttuuxxx
Okay here ya go. If it worked yesterday hopefully it will work today Smile
Works for my printer, I also added the extra cup usb driver.
You need all 3 below plus the one on the link 4 packages total.

Hey nic I compiled libgnomeprint and libgnomecups , installed it, restarted abiword and Now I have 4 selections in the print section of abiword, How many do you have?
Also if you have less than 4,
first go to /usr/lib/libgnomeprint <-- delete folder
then install these 2 pets and restart abiword and see how many you have .
Hope this helps. I'll try to install a later driver for my HP C5280 and report back.

Jim

cups

#242 Post by Minnesota »

Might be timing issue.. I still had cups install open so simply set the default as you did.. Canon was not seen in Abiword..., spread sheet did... If I get time later I will boot up that machine again and give it another shot. Yes I had closed Abiword and reopened...interesting.

2. One of the first things I do with each new "I think I'll keep this one" installation is to edit rc.shutdown (in /etc/rc.d) and add an 'eject' statement at the bottom. This enables me to remove the CD I forget was still in the tray. Otherwise I have to power up just to take it out which often means aborting a boot-up. Is this A Bad Idea for deep and mysterious Linux reasons, or is it An OK Idea? If it's the latter could it go into the release?
I don't know if there's a good reason not to. If it were to be done, two things would need to be done first:
1: Make sure the CD is unmounted (probably previous code has handled this already)
2: Only eject if Puppy was actually run from the cd. This can be done by checking the PMEDIA variable. If it equals "usbcd" or "cd", then eject.

Another thing is that a lot of people probably don't want Puppy to eject their CD when they get done, because they always boot it, but don't want to bother with installing Grub, so they use the CD to boot. So in those cases, ejecting would be bad.

We could have a way to save the preference somewhere, though. The file holding the preference would need to be read up near the top of the script, before the filesystems are unmounted.

But, people who run with pfix=ram all the time don't have a way to save the setting. So maybe an option could be added to the shutdown script asking first, with a ten second timeout, after which it will default to not eject. People who just use Puppy all the time won't need to stick around for the shutdown to finish anyway, so for them it's fine. For people who want their disk out, they need to stick around to retrieve the disk anyway, so having to hit enter an extra time isn't a big issue.

So in summary, if there isn't a good reason not to, we could do this:

*Near the top, load a preference file from somewhere (/etc/eject_on_shutdown?) and store in a variable ($EJECT_ON_SHUTDOWN).
*Near bottom, after all filesystems are unmounted, check the $PMEDIA variable. If "cd" or "usbcd", then:
*if $EJECT_ON_SHUTDOWN not set, or set to ask, display prompt with 5-second timeout, defaulting to no-eject.
*else if set to true, eject.

Works, but.....

To get abiword working this is what I did
click the Administration tab
click manage settings
click your printer that is listed
pull down the administrator tab and select 'Set As Server Default'
fill in the pop-up with
user = root
password = woofwoof
then a new window opens and close it and restart abiword and test it Smile
ttuuxxx
Booted again from CD. Ran all four Pet's, this time in reverse order which I imagine will not make any difference. While cups on screen set Default printer as the canon, it says in the banner Default for Server.

Opened Abiword from icon.. no canon. Keyed a few characters of data, printed postscript generic.. OK, printed. (Even tried abiword from the menu...opened several times...same no show)

Opened Gnumeric.. .shows CANON.
Opened Geany Shows CANON
Opened SeaMonkey shows CANON
All print when selected.

Opened Inkscapelite.... DOES NOT show CANON, Prints on generic OK.

YOU may ask.... did you go back in and set default a second time... YUP.. sill same results on my system.

Cups WORKS, some applications do not show the printer... I have restarted X as well. No help. Might be my old system or something else. Bottom line is we can print. I do not have this on a hard drive so can not reboot without loading all the pets again.

00.03853 murrine

99.55141MB <--------Lots of space :) well under 100MB limit :) LOL

I like the math ... I hope it works in practice. I was grasping at straws with Murrina. If I'd noticed it was only 37kb it would have stayed. *sigh*

Beta1 is uploaded now. The mirrors shouldn't be far behind. I started uploading last night so I didn't see these posts until it was too late. I'll start integrating the smaller CUPS packages immediately. You never know ... we may not be too far away from RC1! 8)

@ttuuxxx I had just the 2 printers before (Create PDF file and Generic Postscript) so I deleted the directory and d/l'd your .pet packages and now it also shows my printer list as well!

That's just marvellous, and I couldn't be happier! :)

Thanks for your hard work. Getting printing to work well "out of the box" without specialist knowledge is a really important part of getting newcomers to stay, so this is a very significant contribution. Well done matey! :D :D :D

Hey WhoDO looks like we need the extra 2 pet package upgrades.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=15045

if its too late to get it in beta1 maybe you can put in the release notes for beta one. Known issues, it will give extra printing options in abiword, If you read the nice above comments, thats what worked in the end, It must of been an oversight by Barry to place both libs in the same directory, plus I enabled cups, abiword in both libs when I compiled them.

I'm pretty sure I have earlier versions of both libraries in the Beta1, but whatever happens your later versions will be in Beta2 or RC1. As for the release notes, let's see if the earlier library versions break things. If they do, I'll add the caution to the release notes. If they don't then we'll just quietly upgrade to the newer versions at the next release.

Great work here, Jeff. Trouble free CUPS printing in Puppy is so important I wouldn't have been prepared to publish this version without it. Your hard work on this is very much appreciated, mate. 8)

dell 1526...for tuxxx

#251 Post by ferikenagy »

not booting kernel from puppy 4.00 until 4.2alpha (only retro puppy works) it is on my dell LAPTOP 1526 not desktop. I did not says it happens because it is an AMD turion 62x2 processor, it maybe some quinky hardware solution adopted in my laptop. All I want to say that That I test the same kernel but kompiled by MU in SMP enabeled mode and they worked for this time (g_pup1.2 & lxde pup) but not boot in standard puppy.I am not sure that is happen because of SMP enabel, it could be because of some other kernel configuration they used on compile, different from that Barry use in standard puppy. The question is which configuration parameter is making the difference? somebody with ,kernel experience should compare those configuration files,....
