OpenOffice 3.0 FINAL - SFS package - ready to download

#1 Post by JB4x4 »

Hello Puppy users!!!!

Thanks to Lobster's tip, we are able to try out the new OpenOffice 3.0 a couple of days early. I put this SFS together in Puppy 3.02, so it should be compatible with both Puppy 3.x and 4.x. (I briefly tested in both). One thing I would like feedback on is if the language settings and spell check are working, Thanks.

Here are the links:

Enjoy,

Many thanks to all who contributed to this pup. It works fine, spelling too (don't forget to set your language so you can utilize Thesaurus).

Takes a little longer to open than 2.4, four to five seconds more, but I'm hoping for more stability.

Again, thanks,
Jake

here's a image of open office 1.1.4 vs 3.0

specs -

Open office 3.0
- 159MBSFS
- 381MB extracted

OpenOffice 1.1.4
- 43MB pet
- 129MB extracted

If I ever get really bored I might find the source for 1.1.4 and 3.0 then extract the new icons from 3.0 and change the background to white like in 3.0 and basically it could be a 3.0 clone but much smaller in size, But i won't be doing that any time soon :?

Anyways OPen Office 3.0 works like a charm, I can run it without actually installing it, just extract the sfs files into a folder and click on
/openOffice3.0/opt/openoffice.org3/program/swriter.bin
starts right up.
I think its looks great, too bad about the size.

Please go for version 1.1.5, as this is able to use OpenDocument format.

ttuuxx, that's startling, the difference in size--three times bigger, wow.

The only reasons I use OOO over abiword is that OOO can make smart quotes and em dashes, which I need for manuscript submissions.

But until you posted those specs, it never seemed as stark: I'm having to use over 300mbs of extra stuff just to get curlicues and long, stringy things.

How discouraging,
Jake

I'm much obliged for this help. Got 1.1.5 downloaded at last. Works fine, and am now playing with ttuuxx's link to 1.1.4.

Anecdotally, while there are huge differences in file size, it's interesting to note that there is not much difference in speed. 1.1.4/1.1.5 load a couple of seconds faster than 3.0, but once the apps are loaded into RAM, upon second start, they're all pretty equal in speed.

Dude - that's huge :)
I recommend at least removing some of the icon sets next time - they have something like 5 or 6 now.
And I guess you included Java too...

It actually seems faster than 2.x, as they promised :)

BTW I can confirm that the generic linux package (which this is presumably made from) will work in any Puppy likely to still be in use (at least back to 1.05) - the only thing with the 1.x series is that the .sfs format is different.
that's startling, the difference in size--three times bigger, wow.
That old 1.1.4 package will have a lot of stuff stripped out of it I think. 3.x could probably be stripped down to an ~90MB sfs and still have everything most people want.

The main advantage with 3.x is it opens Office 2007 documents.

No Java.... As for icons, I believe that there is only the needed ones is the /usr directory. (Let me know if I am wrong).

I did forget to remove the dictionary extensions after installing (about 8 meg extra). Other than that, it is pretty much a vanilla install. I guess all those "new" added features (most of us will never use) just add up. :)

No - those are icons for the window manager and file manager - I'm talking about the huge iconsets used inside openoffice (incidentallly, you can delete all of them and you get text labels on the toolbars instead :) ).

I made an sfs (no - don't have the bandwidth to upload it) that was 123 MB, and all I did was delete the iconsets (except one) from /opt/openoffice.org/basis3.0/share/config, and not extract:
- all the desktop integration rpms except the freedesktop one
- the fonts rpm (well, actually I did for the opensymbol font, but I deleted the rest because they are rubbish).
- maybe the pyuno rpm (can't remember)

If you only keep an iconset other than the default one, you need to rename it. The "classic" icons look best and are the smallest file :)

I was too lazy to strip it right down - it would be pretty easy to get it below 100MB without ditching anything I use, but it would take a while.

I think you might have used the package that includes Java though, because OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US.tar.gz is only 149MB, and I thought making it an .sfs shrinks it... but then again, I would have expected my sfs to turn out smaller too...

I was just wondering is there a .pet version of this 3.0 Final? And is there a cutdown version of it or something? I have 1 gig of space on my Puppy 4.1 so I would be fine with 200-300mb. I like the powerpoint in OpenOffice.

Also in favour of Open Office: if you can put the hours and hours of research in needed to learn it, Base is actually a world class database.........
