Pidgin 2.5.4 for Puppy 4 series

#1 Post by ecomoney »

Im going to make this post here, because I anticipate a lot of people are going to need it.. Ttuxxx has compiled a .pet for the latest Pidgin 2.5.4 that works with puppy 4 series. This was as part of a post for getting aMSN messenger working. The thread is located here

and the .pet download is here

Pidgin is a multi protocol client that will connect to most chat networks

The new puppy 4.2 doesnt have a chat client (something even windows comes with). And there is more bad news, in the latest beta version the previous configuration files for the orphaned pidgin seem to be left behind.

This means that when you start this program, you will automatically be only connected to the puppy linux help chatroom. The workaround is as follows.

1. Click on the green, circular icon when the program is running, this will bring up the main pidgin window.

2 Click on the Accounts menu at the top of the screen, then select "Manage Accounts"

3. In the window that opens, click "Add Account". You then have various options for filling in the login details for your different chat accounts, including a drop down list with the type of account to connect to.

4 Fill in the details for one of your accounts, click the "remember password" if you want this to be remembered for this account, otherwise you will be asked for it every time you start pidgin (which may be good in a shared environment).

5 Repeat steps 4-5 til all your accounts are added. Make sure that there is a tick next to all new accounts in the "enabled" column. Take the "enabled" tick off the one next to the irc.puppylinux if you dont want to automatically join the puppy chatroom each time you login.

Other IM/Puppy Tricks

If you predominantly use MSN Messenger, you might want to try amsn instead. It is a lot more like the microsoft messenger. You can download it from here

You might also like to try Meebo, which is basically a messenger program on the internet. It will do most of the popular networks, plus facebook chat, which doesnt work by default on puppy until you install the large JAVA library. Its at http://www.meebo.com.

There is also another hangover included in the latest beta from previous puppies. Its a small script you will find in /usr/local/bin/meeboview . This opens a window with meebo inside it, just like a local application.

I wish it still had a menu entry (or preferably a desktop shortcut) in the default puppy, but seems to have been dropped for some reason. Instant messaging is an extremely popular use of a computer and its a shame puppy does not come with this facility included.

Happy Messaging.......and dont forget to tell people how great puppy is!!!
