After using Puppy when it looks like Windows, when it looks like itself with JWM and modifying it a few different ways, its good to be able to modify it in a way that is much more linux-like.

The Fluxbox window manager has a very clean, minimalist feel: no icons (traditionallly), a small task bar and everything controlled either via terminal or via the extensive right click menu. Fluxbox, at least to me, has always presented in somewhat of a picture frame format: it is all about the wallpaper and the menu.

I set this one up with a menu that is predominately Puppy but has modifications that I felt worked better with Fluxbox (for example, some of the jwm settings hence programs don't jive well with Fluxbox).

The menu is traditional fluxbox in a few ways, primarily in that it requires a modification of the menu file to change the menu. But that is all it requires.

So, if you want to modify something about the menu, simply: to modify the menu. BUT ONLY MODIFY THE MENU AFTER MAKING A BACKUP OF THE ORIGINAL FILE. Changes are instantaneous to the menu as soon as the new menu file is saved, so you can see your changes right away.

Please give this puplet a test run and tell me if I can modify it in any way that would be helpful.

However it would be helpful if someone else with the bandwidth would pick it up as I don't know how long the file will stay active on that site. It is only 97mb as I really, really tried to make it just Puppy 4.1.2 with Fluxbox and not add any of the many other programs that I enjoy.

If there are issues with that upload please tell me and I'll give it a shot again or try via a different route.

It's pretty much just 4.1.2 with fluxbox slapped on it then the menu modified and a little eye candy added.

So, as much as gxine and cups worked with 4.1.2, they should work fine.

I can say that I ran gxine a couple of times to play mp3's since it is the default media player and it ran great. I have liked 4.1.2 better than others for a lot of things, including wireless, so that transfers to this puplet/version. As far as cups goes, like everything else, it can always use testing! It should pretty much be in the same place as it was on the puppy 4.1.2 menu..

*Edit: I'm now running it from the work computer as it prints the test page on the hp photosmart 7350 attached to my pc, so cups looks good to go. And I'm watching Ironman on gxine, so that looks good to go, too.

Oh, I wanted to also mention that some great eyecandy stuff for fluxbox can be found at http://www.box-look.org in case anyone wanted to add more themes and didn't know about this website.

You can simply click on the fluxbox themes, browse, find the one you want, then install it to /root/.fluxbox/styles/ and you've got your new themes. I really had to struggle not to add a lot of themes I like, thus keeping the size of the puplet down.

**Edit: by the way, the usual Puppy Gtk theme chooser works just fine in this puplet. So, even with the minimalist wm like fluxbox, you can use box-look for your fluxbox theme and then you can use this thread and links like this for your gtk themes and just go crazy with the eyecandy if you want.

Fluxbox on g-pup should be wonderful.

ha! yeah, you got that right! Fluxbox is so minimal that it works very well to keep the size of the distro down. However fluxbox typically isn't the best for everyday users, especially those that are recently migrated from Windows. They usually look at it and go, Ugh, where are the icons?!

I love it for my own distro but I don't get to use it as often as I'd like. This remaster was my excuse to get to use fluxbox.

And i would have done something like the minimalist thing with g-pup, but I like a lot of the programs on 4.1.2. Anyway, only Puppy could pull off 97mb with all that it has on it! I've done remasters with other distro's using fluxbox and for what Puppy can do it would be like 400mb at least...

there are also xdg-menu-packages around you maybe want to try.

Is JWM still in there? I agree that fluxbox is not for those new to Linux BUT for those who want minimal and fast it is very good.

Yeah, I'm right there with ya, Lobster..I was the same way and am the same way.

JWM is still in there; I didn't know what it would do if I simply removed it, if there were any programs that were in some way dependent on it or whatever.

vg1: I don't know what an xdelta is; please clarify.

aragon: I have not checked out those others, but I will. I have never had any problem editing the menu by hand, and it is probably the simplest thing to do. I know there is also the fluxconf program that will allow you to edit the menu, but I rather enjoy just going in and changing it.

But I will check out those other two items today...

This puplet does have the means of configuring fluxbox other than manually adjusting the menu file. I've included a screenshot. Top of the menu, fluxconf...

So, technically you don't have to adjust the fluxbox menu "by hand." I've just found it easier whenever I do it to just edit the menu file. Oh, well. At least it has options.

and typing xwin jwm you have a standard Puppy 4.1.2
(not the same as the evolving Deep Thought which is 4.2 - for those wondering)

and by going to the x terminal (press ctrl + alt + backspace)
and typing xwin fluxbox you reenter fluxbox?

Then add some Puppy bloat (major packages such as OpenOffice) to make a flux capcitator in your own time . . .

yep, pretty much. My intention was not really to make another stripped down version of Puppy, but rather set up the fluxbox wm so that anyone that wanted to try it out didn't have to do it themselves if they didn't want to...still, at 97mb, it's pretty small in the OS world...

vg1: I will be checking that out tomorrow..perhaps that will go well with pupfluxlite.

Ok, all you Puppian Purists, listen up!

After several starts and stops on the old PII Thinkpad 600 laptop I remastered a version of PupFlux to 85mb.

It's amazing how efficient you get at it after doing it three or so times.

This uses the same version of Fluxbox. It starts with Puppy 4.0 which I stripped down somewhat (it doesn't have gnumeric, abiword, or a few other items).

It was important to me to still be a complete version with a browser, a pic viewer, CUPS and a media watcher and most of the other stuff that the amazing Puppy has in it.

I'm using it right now via livecd on one of the home pc's. It found the printer and uploaded stuff to the internet via wireless, so it looks to be cooking along, very quick, looks good, etc.

Anyway, here is the link, but it is the same way that I did last time with that file sharing thing, so if anyone would be kind enough to mirror it it would be appreciated.

If, however, no one else wants it, then mirroring it won't be necessary.
