Dell 266: screen unreadable (green lines and colors)

When I installed from CD to Dell 266 I got mostly green lines and color. The type was so bad I could not read where to click or go to to change he settings. Any suggestions on how to fix this. It looks like it may be a 640 resolution as well.

Try Ctrl + Alt + Backspace, this should take you to a terminal where you can follow the instructions, to get back to a GUI type in xwin and see what happens.
