at what point is it so slow?
What was the last line written to the screen?

You may try to replace initrd.gz with this one, it has a modification in checking for usb-storage:

This could decrease the time, when it counts up to 10 slowly.
But I am not certain, if this will not work on certain setups.

'Micro' is the real blockbuster here. Marvellous.
Although I am a great fan of Dillo, there were some issues. I could only access the Web once with it before a restart was required. Also, on the Opera site with Dillo, I could only see the .exe download for v.10 - it refused to put me through to their full directory (I had to install Firefox to get at it!!). Maybe Netsurf would be better as default in Micro - what's the damage sizewise to the .iso? Too soon to investigate all these features in detail.

Sorry - it's the copying to ram that's so slow with all versions. Neither my cpu nor ram is 'slow' nor 'insufficient' on this test rig.

Does that cure this issue?

If not: right-click - exit deskicons.
Does it solve that?
I have problems with the deskicons ramdisk the first time they start, that might be the cause of your problem.

The files there are not identical with the mainserver, as I had to rebuild them all, to integrate the "micro".
They should have the same functionality, but I did not boot yet with them, so try it at own risk.
The Maxi is not available yet there, as I have trouble to upload it.

sage, you can install netsurf with petget.
344 kb... run in the maxi, dependencies seem to be ok for micro.

No and no! The final phase of start-up seems especially greedy on swap space?
I've been struggling with Opera10 (which, for those who haven't tried it yet, is utterly fantastic and not a bit like an 'alpha'). Got it installed but can't work out which file will start it up - it's not usually this intractable. And Pfind is utter rubbish, never liked it, can't understand why BK persists with some of these cr*p apps (but, then, I don't really understand much about the entire distro or SW, in general!).
Have you seen Austrumi 1.8.5 - amazing, apart from the issues of Xorg7.4!

opera10, if you use my sfs, it should have an icon on the desktop and in the menu.
The executable is /usr/local/bin/opera.

I think you can convert it with tgz2pet.
I just extracted it in Muppyfiler, and copied the extracted "usr" to "/".

It has no bookmarks... but is clean C/Gtk2. Hmmmmm...... if I had more time...

Muchas gratias, Mark. I'm going to leave your productions alone now until you declare gold, because I really find it most unnerving and unnatural working with liveCDs and compressed files - I gave all that up twenty years ago - nothing but trouble. I go for the simple life with FULL installations and files that mean something, always in the same place and infinitely editable! Not as if I'm short of HD space these days - got boxloads of the things. Just an old-fashioned boy, I suppose.

I can run them fine if I open quick mount, select the usb drive, then click on the program icon....which seems to be a lot of extra work. They do Not run from mppy filer

Yes...that works.....I can call up a windows menu system that lets me pick windows apps. So, how could I create an icon for the desktop that would run
cd /mnt/sdb1/pendrive
wine PStart.exe

Now.....a much bigger problem

The first time I selected reboot...the system very dutifully asked me if I wanted to do a save....I said yes and told it to write to cd. That worked fine....I could see the system read the save file and then the main file during the reboot. But now, when I reboot the system, it doesn't ask if I want to save the session....so all the changes and data are lost.

Once that is solved I can try the remaster and report back.

Also, after the reboot, the weather, slideshow and rxvt appear as greyed out boxes on the desktop.

I have been exploring your great New Years Pup (Maxi) and have run across a few minor problems:

1. Using Muppy-filer, tried to add Open Office applications to the Cairo Dock, failed. Tried to add them manually, also failed since I couldn't locate the files, although I thought that Maxi included them. (STRANGE: The Office applications ran properly from the menu.) To get them working from Cairo Dock, I finally just added an Openoffice sfs, which allowed me to add them properly with the Muppy-filer.

2. The PCMan Manager icon on top bar would not execute. Using the application launch bar settings, it was corrected by removing and then adding it back. (Also a problem with other New Years pups)

3. Alsa sound wizard is not working. Leaving the desktop and running "alsaconf" loads the proper sound driver. (Also a problem with other New Years pups)

4. The default media player will not work with .wmv file. Tried installing gzine-0.5.90patched-MU-puppy4.1i486.pet which also did not work. Then installed ttuuxxx's vlc-0.8.6h-engV5.pet which worked fine. (Also a problem with other New Years pups)

5. Installed AMSN, Gslapt, & Bibletime which all work fine now. Bibletime would not run until I added the Missingkde3510libs sfs. I did not have to include the full KDE3510 sfs to get it to work with Maxi. (Mini required both KDE3510 sfs and the missing libs sfs for Bibletime to work.)

The desktop has had some unexplained losses of icons which either correct itself or can be corrected with your "Reload Desktop" feature. Some applications (ie. Goggle Earth) have caused complete lockup which can only be corrected by "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace" and restarting x. Overall this pup is pretty stable and I'll be surprised if it doesn't eventually exceed what you accomplished with Muppy.

Well....I got it installed....and it doesn't seem to work.

It runs - but when it attempts to write to the ntfs partition, it reports that it is not writeable. I tried several times....and the last time, before I ran the script, I wrote and deleted a file in the partition the script complained about...so I don;t think the partition is non-writeable.

I also discovered that while this version doesn't ask me if I want to save session to the live-cd, it does when I create a bootable USB version.

Concerning other issues mentioned here, I found no results yet.
I will upload the current version including these and other small fixes as "final" on sunday, as I start my Java course on monday, and then have less time to add upgrades.

Hi MU,
I downloaded Newyearpup (maxi version) a few hours ago and already it seems like an extremely impressive addition to Puppy. In fact I believe it’s the most impressive one I’ve seen so far. Congratulations and many thanks for all the hard work you and Wow have put into this.

I don’t know if it will help you but I had a few problems installing it.

1. I tried to do a Full install to a PC (AMD Athlon 1900, 1GB Ram, 2x PATA HDD.) Did puppy pix=ram and it was very very slow (several minutes) loading to ram. Have done many (>100) loads with puppy, debian, fedora etc and never had to wait this long.
2. Ran the Universal Installer and got an error message that sdb9 (where it was being installed) was already mounted. Unmounted it, but again it was a long install. Not helped by the fact that there were times when there was no confirmation anything was happening (the installer screen disappeared) except for the CPU and Ram indicators (CPU at 100%.)
3. When installed I rebooted (without saving any save file of course) and after detecting my swap partition (2GB) it gave “Waiting for modules to complete loading..usb..1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

Decided to split my posts.

Some additional observations, which may or may not be relevant.
Same PC and install, with NYPup-02-maxi.

1. the large RAM and CPU indicators go Red if low usage and Green for high usage. This seems the wrong way around. I think it’s more intuitive Red for danger, Green for okay.
2. Like Sage the network wizard detected my Lan as eth1 (not eth0); all other distros on this m/c see it as eth0.
3. I also agree with Sage that nvidia 96xx driver are important. No use with just nv. But I see you will be adding those. Thanks
4. My install put the large Application Penguin (left hand corner) over the bottom desktop icon. It put the Black clock over the Blue clock and when I try to adjust the size of the Black clock it disappears. And if I delete the Blue clock it reappears after a reboot.
5. The Cairo-Dock icon doesn’t seem to do anything.
6. Sorry but I agree with Sage (again). I hate that mouse cursor.
7. It would be nice if the final version had a little explanation as to what the various modes are best for in the “Select graficsdriver

You can deactivate the blue clock too in the desktop options.

To resize the dark clock, right click it - configure this applet.
There you can adjust the size with sliders.
