Well lobster I have too much on my plate now and I'm moving forward, not backward. So i'm staying clear of any past releases like 3.02.

Still a Nice Useful Pup

#32 Post by darry1966 »

I have been using this lately having updated it with new Glibcs Gcc etc and some other minor updates and use it with my digital camera been having fun with it.

Available at Archive.org where there are many other nice retro Pups to play around with. I encourage others who haven't been to the puppy section at Archive.org to check it out.

I'm trying it now. It works well with Softmaker Office (so no need to install Open Office, Libreoffice, Abiword etc.).
Gigabyte M68MT-52P motherboard, AMD Athlon II X4 630, 5.8 GB of DDR3 RAM and a 250 GB Hitachi hard drive running Ubuntu 16.04.6, MX-19.2, Peppermint 10, PCLinuxOS 20.02, LXLE 18.04.3, Pardus 19.2, exGENT 200119, Bionic Pup 8.0 and Xenial CE 7.5 XL.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Puppyluvr did a good couple of variants of 3.01 (IcePup and Transitions); they're both smaller than EmSee (which is the only one of Stemsee's pups I know offhand) and I haven't seen either of them online for ages.

CORRECTION: Puppyluvr's got his own page and IcePup's on it, here;

Same here, and I have trouble getting a good "burn" out of the icepup iso too (the one on the page I linked to).

Yeah, there are one or two others like that which I've never been able to burn to disk successfully, such as Emerald Puppy,

I don't feel it's a big deal when there are so many others to choose from, but I have to confess I'm puzzled as to why it happens at all. It usually takes me two or three goes at burning it off (and getting "coasters" for my trouble) before the penny drops that it isn't just bad luck.

An extremely obscure attempt at continuing the work of 3.x... If I can stumble upon an iso I'll have to test it out. 3.x was probably one of my favorites, and I would not mind seeing it get more usage, or at least some continuation. Maybe even a woof of the slackware version this was compatible with, but who knows.

Typically for me, I consider Slacko to be the continuation of 3.x, just more of that sweet sweet slack :twisted:

3.x is one of the most versatile of the Puppies, in that you can run a reasonably up to date browser (Firefox 17.0 ESR) on it and at the same time install .pup files from the old days. Another versatile one is ttuuxxx's Puppy Classic 214X.

(Darry: if you can't get IcePup to burn it might still work as a frugal install once you've extracted the files from the iso and put them in a boot directory somewhere. Takes a bit of fiddling about with file locations and/or editing of the menu.lst file to be got to work but it can be done).

Sorry Colonel for taking so long to answer, I might try that. Sounds like a whole lot of fun to be had when I get time. Looking after my Grandson at the moment and boy that is a full time job.

By the way the files required by installer are available separately here.

Not a problem Darry. In case you or anyone else is interested, here's the relevant part of my menu.lst file for Icepup;

title Puppy Linux IcePup
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/IcePup/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 pmedia=atahd
initrd (hd0,0)/boot/IcePup/initrd.gz

The funny thing is that after all that I wasn't able to get IcePup to recognise my router (it happens quite often with the 3 series Pup derivatives for some reason) and couldn't therefore connect to the Internet, so I stopped using it anyway.
