Puppy 3.02CE Going BETA!

#1 Post by J-Bob »

Well, i put quite a bit of thought into it, and once i get finished with loading the fixes i found, the system should be able to install, use modules, and work hopefully without error.

this is why i decided for the next release, things are going to become interesting.

For Beta 1.

- Fixed PetGet, posisbly with some Puppy 4 Packages added into their own category in the Puppy3 livepackage file. hopefully to allow a simpler system for package management, while allowing people to use later software.

- Updated squashfs, people might make modules on puppy 4 machines, and we want these to work with it.

- Fixed installer, one of the final major bugs to be fixed, uses the 3.01 installer. Might make a version using puppy 4's.

- linking various mime-types of the same program, this might save a few kilos.

- further cut-down, Gaim removed.

For Beta 2

- Possibility of preloading EeePC drivers into it by default.

- Might update ALSA, so i can use this on my desktop.

- Might make a new look specifically for netbooks.

---------------------------------

suggestions would be great, but b advised that not all will be chosen, and sending me PMs about it will only make me want to not add them even more.

You have been warned, somewhat. well, not really.

naming confusion....

http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/tronkel/

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=20962

why not make it 3.2 and incorporate the 4.2 core upgrades like hotrox and pwidgets

also why not replace gaim/ayttm with meebo.com there is already a startup script in /usr/local/bin (in 4.1.X anyways) it basically just calls bareview http://www.meebo.com (just add a desktop file for it in /usr/share/applications)

similarly you can replace some other programs with browser plugins like fireftp and simple mail(may require xsidebar) as well as xinha html editor
(this would also allow you to use firepup) to start these you would make a desktop file that either calls bareview or defaultbrowser chrome://....
Check out my github repositories. I may eventually get around to updating my blogspot.

I made these packages really small for 4.2 maybe you could use them

Xchat 684KB Instant messenger I configured it to auto login into #puppylinux for help, changed the fonts etc 684KB
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=13878

People really do hate using online IM like mebo where its difficult to login, where you can't save your friends on a list etc, Its not a messenger it a direct login.

Xpad 44kb is a sticky note system, would be best installed and have it autostart, because it min to the taskbar and makes it handy to use. its not really handy if you need to click menu, then documents, the Xpad. notes are made to be quick and simple and this program even remembers your notes until you delete them
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=13874

Parcellite 22kb Cliboard
Better than glipper and should be auto-started when booting.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=13265

Icewm 575kb
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=13759

xarchiver 111kb replacement for Xarchive
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=37276

Updated package manager
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=13571

GTK 337kb Hash gives you md5 and shaw1 sums
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=32700

MtPaint3.29 260kb latest version
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=13894

If you installed all these it would be around 1.25 MB because most of them are replacing current ones.

I think those would be good to fit into the beta. I never liked Xarchive very much, it usually had bugs and was quite slow. So i think a replacement is in order.

Updating Mtpaint is also something i think would be very good to see.

I'm also on possibly having a boot screen kid of like what WhoDO has for Alpha 1 of 4.2.

Speaking of 4.2 i have plans to download the alpha, for what i have been hearing, it sounds highly promising.

And I'm thinking of making FirePup + SimpleMail + The WYSIWYG Addon for a lightweight SeaMonkey killer.

GTK Hash would be a very nice utility to include,

And Xnote and Xchat would be very nice to include.

But it's still being called 3.02 if you are wondering. As this is a progression to Puppy 3.10 not 3.1. Partially like how Puppy 2.xx went and how 3.xx was planned.

out of all those minus icewm. only 2 programs worked. Gtkhash, and MtPaint. The only other one that worked was parcellite, but when i try to edit the clipboard, it crashes with a symbol lookup error.

and everything else has a symbol lookup error involving g_once_enter_impl.

if someone could help me with this, it would be appreciated.

And I'm cautious about IceWm, it's going into 4.2 from what i know, but if that does a full transition. Than where would be the traditional puppy look.

This Pup fits with a different niche than 4.2. 4.2 is mainstream. But if you need an older kernel, than this might be better for some people. As it fits as a minimalistic type of puppy. As that was what it was intended to be since it's inception.

And i'm keeping it thin to allow for more drivers in the future. Possibly in 3.03 or 3.04

but you never know.

Ya thats the differences between 4 series and 3, if you get a working model and devx, I could recompile them.
Icewm probably would work, Just remember the most popular CE ever was 2.15ce and the default window manager was IceWm, and also since my 2 releases of icewm, I've had over 1000 downloads, just to show how popular it is.

that would probably be good for a later release. As i got past most issues with 3.02 and it looks like it might be stable enough to be the Beta 1 Release.

It's likely i might add it to 3.02 beta 2. As i got another person working with me. His account on the forum is B-Ren from what i believe.

That would be one of my relatives. He introduced me to puppy, and I help bring him back to it.

I imagine he would be more than happy to try and help with modding your theme to make it work with his Greenlooks theme he's making.

Well, i'm downloading the IceWm package you made, and i'm preparing to get it ready for Puppy 3.02CE Release Candidate (there may only be one RC), as i imagine that when Puppy 2.xx was around, releases usually were once every two weeks or something like that.

And well, I have no life. that's why i can prepare Puppy 3.02CE this quick.

Have you thought about turning 3.02ce into Slackware 12.2 bin compatibility?. i started making packages for it, If you want them I could upload the package, really its just a handful of packages. But the devx would have to be updated also. The ones I made were for the OS side, but I still have the original Slackware version also so you could just extract the dev parts from the originals.

I have from time to time, but my goal is primarily to revive the remnants of the TalkingStick project.

Primarily why i'm hoping that Lobster will be able to set me up with the ability to edit the wiki to add another CE into the list called Remnant. meaning the revived remains of Puppy 3.02CE, as the original goal never went through.

But if you could upload the slack 12.2 packages that would be appreciated.

I'm downloading them as i speak.

Strangely i have heard nothing from tronkel in quite a long time.

Well, i guess it's You, Jon, and me in this project as of late.

do you know where i can get the offline website, i think that would be a good addition. And possibly netsurf.

I'm currently making Chihuahua a barebones release, but 3.03 i hope to have work more like regular puppy, but possibly with a different set of tools.

As this is meant for later respins by the community.

Netsurf is great and all but it doesn't download pet packages, basically your screen fills up with the code, it doesn't have the right click 'Save As'. So really its only for website viewing which makes it a very limited browser.

Yes I just tried the latest dillo, It does download packages, but it doesn't do frames or java script, heres a link, you need the 2 packages to make it work, dillo & flt

i'm preparing those now.

while i do plan to update some stuff, i don't have too many plans to attempt 12.2 compatibility just yet. the 3.xx road is a very, very long road. And the community just began the road.

But with this road, we can prepare for the future.

We could theoretically go to Puppy 3.99999999999 if we wanted to or needed to. but by that time this probably would be a different Puppy.

Like 3Puppy showing it's 3.xx roots possibly.

who knows what will happen

dillo2 works, but the new libraries basically kill seamonkey or firefox if i try to use them..

It says "/usr/lib/firefox/run-mozilla.sh: Line 131: Segmentation Fault "$prog" $[1+$@]

and if i try to run the plain binaries. It kills rxvt.

I have no idea why this is doing this, but it's killing the backwards compatibility So those libraries will need to wait.

this is probably going to knock a half-hour from the release schedule.

And it's release might just be 3.02. since the community seems to be focused on Puppy 4.2, while this has a very obscure existance.

and if i release this, it might get more people to focus on this project..

It is important to understand what the advantages of the 3.02 series are

The main feature is slackware binary compatibility
That is a lot of programs

I'll see what i can figure out.

I'll try some slackware binaries.
But for now, if we call this the final 3.02, this is likely to not make the grade. Without running most Puppy 3.xx and Puppy 2.xx applications.

And in this release i'm trying to mainly focus on the tiny size. Than figure out where to go from there.

And from what i know, Puppy 3 carried Slackware 12 binary compatibility, but compatibility with 12.2, might be a challenge.

But the main thing for this release was to stabilize the alpha, and get a cutdown puppy from that, and see where we should go next.

This is partially why i call this Puppy Remnant/Lassie. As i don't know if Chihuahua was the CE name, but Lassie was one for sure. So the release name for this is lassie.

And until more people enter the project, complicated things like trying to bump up slackware compatibility and recompiling drivers would need to wait.

So this Puppy which i officially call Remnant Lassie. but could just be called Lassie, partially follows the initial plan.

And some things like a graphical shutdown system, I could probably build. But i would want to learn some Gnocl first.

first.
Slack12.2 uses a different Glibc but the programs are still interchangeable, well in 1 direction with glsapt, I guess you can use 12.0 software on 12.2 without downgrading but you can't use 12.2 on 12 without upgrading. I read that somewhere. Thats why I figured better to move up to 12.2, because Slackware doesn't update all that often, They'll be using 12.2 for the next year or so.
