SOLVED - Can I recover pup_save after failed backup attempt?

#1 Post by peebee »

Having just bought a nice new 4GB usb stick I thought "I'll make a backup copy of pup_save.2fs"

BIG BIG MISTAKE!!!!

The Rox copy gradually eat up my disk space and then failed and I've now got no free space left.

Is there any way to recover the disk space that Rox seems to have used and then not released when the copy failed??

Many thanks
Peter

If you can boot with cd: puppy pfix=ram

go to menu>utility>resize personal storage file

add biggest amount there

reboot

Thanks for the advice.

I think your suggestion would increase the pup_save file but may not recover the space Rox has destroyed??

My pup_save was configured at 512MB and before the failed copy I had c. 400MB free - after the failed copy I have 0MB free so what I would like to do is recover the 400MB............which must be somewhere???

Thanks again
Peter

I increased the size of my pup_save by 64mb and was then able to use pfind to find and delete the temporary file that was using up my disk space.

Now back to 473M free :D

You didn't lose your free space by shrinking the pup-save file;
but by inadvertently trying to over fill it.
It's counterintuitive, but if you were to try to delete a large file
by putting it in the trash can, the same thing would happen.
When this problem has arisen before, one of the suggestions
for trying to save the crashed installation was the one I made.
Don't know if it was successful or not.
A weird frugal installation problem.

good luck
