Can't refresh menu?

#16 Post by Terryphi »

I have added openoffice-2.2.0.sfs in the BootManager and rebooted but there is no option to refresh the menu to include OpenOffice. Can this be done from the command line? Or is there a file I can edit?

sometimes I click on sfs and extract the files into a folder and make a pet then install the pet. That might work.

The simple workaround is to open the OpenOffice folder (usually in /opt), go to /program and drag "soffice" to the desktop. You can then edit that shortcut or set an icon for it.
Puppy user since Oct 2004. Want FreeOffice? Get the sfs (English only).

Thanks, raffy. :) That fixed it. I haven't found the OO icon yet but that is a minor issue.

Thanks for the suggestion ttuuxxx but I need to use the sfs for more than one pup.

Try this .pet. I stole the files (and renamed 'em) from my Mandriva installation. Works for me, read, write, delete, so far so good.
Hopefully will solve the NTFS read write dillemma!

REMOVED .pet

Ok Chris,

Didn't do that to my system, but I removed the .pet anyway. The problem nevertheless is with those libs.

SSS, (geez), Surree, no that's not it, wait, Soorey? No, ah, sorry! That's it.

Well I've rebuilt my .pet with xubuntu libs but I'm not going to upload it. I've potentially destroyed 6 XP systems who used this thread. Sorry to those affected, but if you backup nothing should be lost.
I downloaded the xubuntu, found the libs referred to in the error messages in woof when mounting ntfs drives (similar but not the same names, but are symlinked in the same dir with the name in woof's error msg), coppied them, DID NOT rename them, symlinked in the same dir, changed the names of the LINKS, petted it up and it installed to /lib. if you want the pet PM me. These libs are not in Woof. I searched everywhere. It seems to be the reason NTFS is read only.

Warning: Only tested on my XP machine. May have dire consequences.

The problem I see is that woof is 2.6.27.4 kernel, Xubuntu-8.10 is 2.6.27.7 kernel. Is it a problem?

No Robin Hood antics, just trying to help out. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

PS, that was posted in XP, now in woof

PPS: I have bitten the bullet and ran woof on the vi$ta lappy. Created save file and save dthe files off the cd (in Vista's install partition), now it works ok in woof. Time now is 21:31 AEST (UMT +10), If I'm not back posting (from vista) in ten minutes then we have a problem.

My XP has booted up fine just now.

No problems at all....
I've been out fixing a friends XP...
fixing XP up with Puppy.

Sorry to hear others may be affected.
Puppy has had NTFS since Puppy 2.02?

But this is Crap Bunturight...............right.

I did look for an easyMount NTFS fix for Woofy.
That's why when you posted I tried it straight away.
And as I say no probs.

""""""""""""
But now I'm thinking that it's a bit of a Blackadder moment mate.
Give them an evil fix to lure them back to Puppy.

" Baldrick continually invents many "cunning plans", which are scathingly ridiculed by Blackadder (who often ends up using them in desperation) "

" Blackadder:
Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words
"I have a cunning plan" marching with ill-deserved confidence
in the direction of this conversation?

Baldrick:
[With cheeky smile on face] They certainly are sir!

Blackadder:
Well, forgive me if I don't do a cartwheel of joy;
your record in this department is hardly 100%. So what is it?

Baldrick: We do nothing

Blackadder: Yup, it's another world-beater.

I'm on your case now mate.

/////////////

I've always used NTFS with Puppy...a godsend.'

Barry was one of the first with NTFS support.

Previously I used the Avast Bart CD.

But Puppy is superquick...and could
delete the undeletable.

The only time there is a problem is when there is
a locked file due to a Windows fault.

You have to run chkdsk in Windows.....
or a Bart PE cd or Ultimate Boot cd 4 Windows.

It happened 2 days ago redoing my wifes computer
with a backup and updating her browsers etc and
going to Antivir Free AV.

Totally unexpected...and a first time ever on her machine,
which at least 4 years old....but screwy happens.
And I clean up XP and sometimes Vista all the time.
I redo her comp every 8 months...mine much more often.
Straight from the hard drive with my Puppy fix XP how to.

And with malware/viruses so out of control,
who knows what happened to people previously.

And I never go past Service Pack 2.
I never ever update Windows....a joke ...
cause nore problems than it's worth.

Only with the newest Sata drives or a hijacked Bios...
from the likes of HP etc....do you download Nlite....
add a sata driver to fix it to see the drives...
and add Service Pack 3.

This is for people who want to downgrade Vista to XP.

Anyway 01micko....sorry that you're in the soup.
Surely someone can throw you a crouton that you can
use as a liferaft.

Hey Chris,
Good to hear not too much damage, That leaves 5! Anyways I got it going ok I think, Vista is cruising along, only reason I didn't get back on in ten before was my own boofheadedness! (word of the day!!!! )

01micko :

PM me your new pet fix.

I'm happy to try it ....no comebacks.
If it fails me no doubt you'll call me Boofhead 2.

The one thing I could not get going the second time I
tried Woofy....after seeing your previous fix?????

was the window manager...XFCE .

Anyway PM if you wish.

I'll try it tomorrow if you do.

Regards Chris.

Not so good second time around.

I posted here because the forum has been more
off then on.
That's not a criticism....probably more to do with servers being hit.

Well I spose we'll have to wait for someone else to fix the ntfs dilemma.

Could try the Puppy libs but probably won't make a difference. There might be something wrong with fuse or fusemount in woof. Doesn't want to play.
Like I said, I've got the woof_save on ntfs on the vista lappy and vista is still behaving itself. I thought there was a chance of killing it, but still so far so good.

Do you remember the 'buntu fix? I should check it out since I d'loaded xbuntu.

Cheers mate, thanks for having a crack

Chris and others concerned with ntfs read/write issues.
I'm beginning to think that Barry left those libs out for a reason. He would have known. I'm not going to speculate on the reason but I will say this. As Jeff reminded me/(us), woof is alpha/pre-alpha in development. We all know this and all understand the consequences.
Realistically, woof will not be stable for a couple of months. It is a first release, and a good one at that. Overall there are probably not too many testers out there; those who are would be regular visitors to this forum or Barry's Blog.

****************************

There have been fifteen people who have posted on this thread, the only thread about woof. Most of these have posted on Barry's blog too; three more or so, who have not posted here. That makes about (could be wrong  ) eighteen people that we know have tried woof.
If you look at the forum statistics near the bottom of the main page you usually see that the guests out number the registered users by anything from five to one to ten to one. Of course some of those may be registered users who haven't logged in, so a reasonable average would be six or seven to one, guests as is to registered users. Now many guests may be newbies, but just as many could be seasoned Linux users.

Now this is speculation; say another six times those eighteen known woof users/testers/triers (call them/us guinea pigs) exist, Then we have one hundred and eight possible guinea pigs. Not bad for a first release but hardly enough to test everything in woof!

Printer Problem in Woof

#33 Post by Terryphi »

Is printer configuration still a work in progress in Woof?

Menu items Cups Manage Printing and CUPS Printer Wizard produce "404 Not Found" messages in my system.

I have tried adding the .ppd for my printer in /etc/cups/ppd and edited /etc/cups/printers.conf but it is still not working.

Printer problem

#34 Post by Terryphi »

Looking into it further it is clear that there are missing files in Woof002.

In Puppy 4.12 the files for managing printers are in /usr/share/doc/cups-1.1.23 . In Woof 002 there is no such directory but there is a directory /usr/share/doc/cups-1.3.9 which is empty.

However, even when files are set up correctly manually in /etc/cups there is still a problem because jobs sent to the printer by applications do not arrive.

Before I try out Woof myself and make a mess of everything I have some questions to people who have tried it:

If I download Woof will I be able to access the Ubuntu repositories and download their packages and will dependencies sort themselves out? For instance, will the latest Picasa in the Ubuntu repositories install itself in Woof as if it was a .pet or will it act like an .sfs or not work at all? Will the automatic update function in Ubuntu work in Woof? Is Woof using synaptic or an equivalent or will I be able to download and install synaptic?

I know I should have downloaded and tried Woof myself but I'm especially interested in the features above and will try it if these features are present. Thanks for any answer.

Artie
