How to make custom Puppy for school?

#1 Post by badsaintz »

I'm a teacher at a local college here in the Philippines offering IT courses I've (personally) already used some of the great distro available i really love suse, ubuntu and PCLinux though i already had my hand on Linux still I'm a newbie in the world of Open Source especially Linux

well my problem is i wanted to do a full Linux setup on all PC in our Lab but since we live in a third world country were still using old/Legacy PC with ram of not more than 256mb so i decided to do some personal evaluation of small footprint distro such as puppy, knoppix, DSL and Xubuntu due to system constraints i have, so far puppy killed all the competition!
1. ease of use
2. installation
3. networking (wired/wireless) and,
4. speed

what i needed for our own blend of puppy is support for the following;
1. OpenOffice/oxygenoffice
2. gambas / realbasic
3. LAMP
4. Firefox
5. blender
6. gimp
7. c++
8. pascal/freepascal

you see I've been in the forum/site/blog anything related to puppy Linux for 2 months now (its our vacation) reading and testing but still could not figure-out how in the world to do it! i could not even install gambas decently nor office application
i still have 2 more weeks before class starts and i really needed help on this. if anyone could just help me out I'm sure with proper guidance i can make thus i really need help badly

right now I'm evaluating 4.20

Welcome, badsaintz! You've come to the right place, I'm sure.

Have you seen this thread which describes a project which I think has some things in common with your own?

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=281402

Be sure to check out Puppy 4.2.1

<edit> I should have added: the new "Puppy's portal page" should give you an easy installation of the 'popular' applications you mention, and I think 'unofficial' .pet packages are available for the remainder. Use this search to get these:

http://wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html

Puppy has almost everything now - learning how to find it is the challenge! ;-)

Why don't you give every student a bootable USB with Puppy installed?

Then every student has his/her "own computer" at the USB!!

I have a USB-installation with all the programs i need; OpenOffice, Pidgin, Skype...

And when when i travell, I just put my USB in my pocket and so I have "my computer" with me! Just find a PC and i'm back in business.

thanks i'll try to contact raffyM hope would give me a copy of his pinoyPup

@ thoase

i would love to see that one day but our student could hardly afford to continue college! luckily our school owner/founder is more than generous enough to offer the lowest Fees (province/state wide) to our student giving them a chance of life :D

Hi ya. :)

You can use this LAMP with 4.2.1:
http://minipc.org/lamp/

Use sfs by putting in in /mnt/home (the partition where your pup_save is) then reboot. Make sure its number is the same, like lamp_421.sfs.

Same with any OpenOffice_421.sfs (download the sfs then rename to your Puppy version). I suggest you use OpenOffice version 3.x.

For old PC,s I've packaged a lot of breeezy goodies (puppy 2.13). Get started with PXE-booting:
http://minipc.org/pxe/
This one is ready for eeePC 701-900.

I will upload other breeezy builds tomorrow.

Please check your PM.
Puppy user since Oct 2004. Want FreeOffice? Get the sfs (English only).

from : http://puppy-linux.awardspace.com/

2000-2008 Pentium IV 512Mb RAM Puppy 4 series.
2006-2008 Core 1Gb RAM Puppy 4 series.
2006-present Core 2* 1Gb RAM Puppy 4 series.

are the spec true?
if yes then i'm testing the wrong verion of puppy for my school! :!: :?:

what we have here are 256mb memory units and a couple of 1G!

that site does not say what the source of it's information is; it looks as though it's what the site owner believes and is not based on any recommendations that I have found, either by Barry Kauler or on this forum.

256MB of RAM should be sufficient for any of the current official released Puppy versions (although perhaps not for a very large "puplet"?)

I've tested 4.20 with 128 mb of ram and no swap and it ran fine. As always, more ram is better but 256mb should be plenty.

good day to all!

we managed to install Puppy 4.2.0 k2.6.25.16-seamonkey on 20 PC!
we just have some minor problem (i think)
1. firefox seems to regularly shutdown (firefox-3.0.3.pet)
2. opera is a bit slow on a 256Ram PC (ch-opera-10.sfs)
3. i cannot install good office (i forgot the file)
4. i can install and use blender but the minute i install open oofice 2.2 the link to the menu doesnt seem to work anymroe (blender-py2.5-248_400.sfs + OO22-flash-java-pgs.sfs)
4.1 the latter office version also installs another copy of blender why is it? i think thats where the problem occurs! (even if i install blender first over openoffice2.2 or the other way around same result)
4.2 i managed to find the link of blender and i manually created a link unto my desktop so i can use it just to inform you guys.
5. openoffice3 (openoffice-3.0.0.sfs) is really slow on 256PC thus i opted to use 2.2 version
6. i installed devx_420.sfs but geany0.16 cannot seem to find the compiler for g++/c++.
7. geany0.16 doesnt show the compiled program either from JAVA/g++/c++/FreePAscal (im using geany0.16 coz its lightweight!)

any suggestion would surely do help!
help is really a grace from up above! :D
