I downloaded Puppy Unleashed onto Windows XP to transfer over to Puppy Unleashed which I have on a seperate standalone (no network/Internet) computer. When I ran McAfee, it detected the "EICAR Test File" in the Puppy Unleashed file. What is this?

this is a test file to test that your virus software checker is working to minimum standards - I think it is part of f-prot in Puppy? Not sure exactly - but nothing to worry about - do a google for more info

:D

Lobster is correct. Don't worry about it. F-prot uses it as a test file.

Thanks

Actually it is a GOOD thing to have. It's even better that it is detected. You can track what action (email, quartine,...) you have the settings of your anti=virus system set for.
It actually contains ONLY the exact TEXT string:

Code: Select all

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Maybe but if one didn't want this warning then they could encrypt this file.

Probably related to the massive necromancy of this thread. The original post is from 14 years ago. The creator's account has probably been deleted at some point.
